Fibronectin immobilized by covalent conjugation or physical adsorption shows different bioactivity on aminated-PET

To manipulate the cellular response to synthetic surfaces, extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins such as fibronectin (FN) and collagen are often immobilized on the surface to promote interaction between these ligands and the cell receptors. In this study we compared the biological properties of FN-decorated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) produced by two widely used immobilization techniques: adsorption and conjugation. As revealed by the micro-bicinchoninic acid (micro-BCA) assay and AFM, the modified surface topography was dependent on the immobilization methods. Adsorption method preserved the compact conformation of FN, reaching saturation when a monolayer of FN was formed. Covalent conjugation induced FN unfolding and fibrillogenesis, forming multiple layers of FN. Biological characterization by adhesion of baby hamster kidney 21 (BHK21) cells and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for active Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) domains suggested that the difference in conformation of FN led to different bioactivities. Adsorption maintained a more active RGD domain, thereby promoting cell adhesion, whereas conjugation induced fibrillogenesis and blocked the access of RGD, consequently suppressing cell adhesion as the surface density of FN increased. This study suggests that in addition to choosing the nature of the adhesion molecule, the mode of immobilization may also significantly influence the bioactivity of the surface. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Scheduling in semiconductor wafer fabrication is viewed important due to its effect on both proper utilization of expensive equipment and cycle time. The complex nature of manufacturing processes used in semiconductor manufacturing makes scheduling and other activities such as process and quality control more critical and more interdependent on each other. We investigate the interdependency, interaction, and potentially needed coordination between scheduling and advanced process control decisions. As a first step, we analyze the issue using simple models (single machine settings) both analytically and computationally, and draw insights for more complex and realistic situations.

The University of Massachusetts Lowell College of engineering has an objective to integrate service-learning into core required courses in every department so every student every semester has at least one course with S-L (SLICE: Service-Learning Integrated throughout a College of engineering). Why? Because past research has shown service-learning (S-L) to be effective meeting course learning objectives while addressing real community needs and to be successful for students on a number of cognitive and affective measures. In addition, the college wishes to attract and retain underrepresented groups in engineering. For example, the college in 2004-05 had only 12% females in its undergraduate engineering population of 914 full-time students compared to 17.5% national average. Since past research has shown that women students respond to applied knowledge and helping people, and underrepresented minorities to community connections, there are many ways in which service-learning is a good fit. Responding to the SLICE initiative, 25 engineering faculty members actually implemented S-L into at least one of their courses during the 04-05 academic year and 34 faculty in 05-06. In 2005-06 over the two semesters an average of 700 undergraduate students participated in S-L projects in 52 courses, some with required S-L projects and others elective. This wide variety of courses included, for example, a first year introduction to engineering with 300 students, kinematics, soil mechanics, heat transfer, engineering ethics, electronics, plastics design, strength of materials, and a senior EE capstone course on assistive technology with 70 students. Community partners included the Lowell National Historical Park, many local rehabilitation clinics, a local food bank, the City Transportation Office, as well as remote villages in a developing country. Height limitations are frequent in multi-storey buildings due to zoning regulations, economic requirements and esthetical considerations. On the other hand, substantial spaces are normally required to enable the passage of large pipes and ducts beneath steel beams leading to uneconomic floor heights. The most adopted solution is the use of holes at the steel beam webs in order to enable the passage of services. Chung et al. [1], [3] state that nowadays services that require web openings up to 75% of the beam height are not uncommon. These openings could lead to a significant decrease of the beam load carrying capacity depending on the adopted holes shape, size and location. This motivated the present study that used finite elements simulations to quantitative and qualitative evaluates the structural behaviour of steel beams with web openings. This paper presents the developed finite element models using the ANSYS [6] program to investigate the structural response of steel beams with web openings. The analysis incorporated geometric and material non-linearities and were calibrated against numerical and test results to validate the proposed finite element models. The investigation also contemplated the simulations of beams with a series of holes distributed all over their length known as cellular beams. The imulations were centred at the evaluation of the different steel beams with web penings failure mechanisms and the main reasons for yours collapse modes. © 2007 Civil-Comp Press.

Catalytic surface modification of roll-milled poly(Ε-caprolactone) biaxially stretched to ultra-thin dimension

A novel roll-milling polymer processing technique along with biaxial stretching was used to fabricate 10 μm thick poly(Ε-caprolactone) films. A less invasive collagen surface modification was used, involving a reaction between corona-preactivated membranes and ferrous-containing acrylic acid solution at the low temperature of 42 °C. Successful modified films were characterized by Toluidine Blue O assay and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells also showed both higher proliferation rate and differentiated cobblestone morphology on these collagen-immobilized substrates. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Similar to a recent paper by Karczub [J. Acoust. Soc. Am., Vol. 119(6), 3553‐3557, 2006], this work utilizes a symbolic math solution to obtain analytical solutions for the dispersion relation in a thin circular cylindrical shell. Analyses on the propagating wave mode shapes are particularly emphasized. The analytical solutions provide a straightforward calculation for all four branches of the dispersion curves, and the cumbersome numerical root searching technique is avoided. The dispersion relations for the breathing and torsional modes (n=0 circular harmonic), which were neglected by Karczub, are included. Mode shapes that characterize the types of wave that are predominantly transversal, longitudinal, circumferential, or in any combination of the three are analyzed in considerable detail. Effects by thickness and Poisson ratio variations are considered and examined. The cutoff frequencies for the higher order propagating modes are compared among the various orders of circular harmonics, from n = 0 to 10. Finally, comparison among several shell theories in the dispersion relation prospective, which is directly related to their accuracy in predicting the vibratory resonant frequencies of a finite shell, is also included in the discussion.

Wireless networked multisite triaxial accelerometry system was proposed to estimate activity energy expenditure during daily life. Proposed system used different estimation algorithms according to activity classification based on measured acceleration signals. The estimation results showed higher correlation (R2 = 0.98) and smaller standard errors of estimation (SEE = 0.66 kcal) than any other system in preceding reports. © 2007 IEEE.

Although there are a number of online degrees available online today from some of the most respected educational institutions in the US, very few of these are accredited undergraduate engineering programs. Of interest here is an online program specifically designed and developed to address the many mid-career employees and non-traditional students who have yet to earn an undergraduate engineering degree, especially those in business and industry and at military installations. In this paper, we present the results of a study which seeks to address how best to develop, implement, and assess a fully accredited online undergraduate engineering program. Of particular importance is to identify and address critical elements of such a program, including: potential student populations, faculty requirements, curriculum requirements, admissions criteria, accreditation requirements, implementation resources (faculty, technical equipment, financial), collaboration with other institutions, and laboratory requirements. Successful development of such a program will enable access to superior engineering education by under-represented populations, students in remote locations, and students who are otherwise constrained with regard to traditional undergraduate engineering programs due to family or employment obligations. If successful, such a program could become a model for other undergraduate science and engineering curricula and programs offered online. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.
