The need to find other means of energy is paramount, especially for developing countries like Nigeria. The depletion of the ozone layer has been on the rise due to increasing demand for energy resources, especially fossil fuels which contribute to climate change. Developing countries like Nigeria have enormous biomass resource potentials. In most developing countries millions of tons of agricultural waste is generated each year and most of it goes to waste or decomposes. Many of the rural areas find it inconvenient to burn the by-products for cooking in their crude forms. The utilization and disposal of the by-products contaminate the surroundings, which in turn affects the health and well-being of the people. Similar wastes can serve as the source of a so-called clean energy - bio-fuel. Bioenergy can be produced by using biomass in a number of ways.

In the current perspective of ecological contamination, utilization of biowaste is essential in the recent trends. Among the different bio-waste, Rice husk (RH) is one of the plentiful materials presently having significantly less utilization and more as a landfilling material. This bio-waste, after ample storage, decomposes and creates environmental pollution. Bio silica and biocarbon have had many applications in the recent past. Extraction of biosilica and biocarbon from Rice husk by pyrolysis process and calcination process has many applications in the composite industry. In the present study, an effort has been made to extract silica and carbon from rice husk and reinforce them as a filler material in polymer composites and test the tribological properties of the fabricated composites. The composites are made-up by hand layup technique with filler percentages 2, 4 and 6 wt.%. A Pin on disc equipment is used to investigate the abrasive wear behaviour of silica-based and carbon-based polymer composites. The samples were tested at different loading conditions and different RPMs by keeping the total sliding distance constant and measuring the abrasive wear and coefficient of friction of the fabricated composites. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

3D printed hydrogel components have been used in a wide range of applications including tissue engineering and soft and biohybrid robotics. Advances in embedded printing, such as the Freeform Reversible Embedding of Suspended Hydrogels (FRESH), have further improved the geometric fidelity of 3D printed hydrogels using a fugitive support bath. Recently, it has been shown that the structural rigidity of hydrogels fabricated with embedded 3D printing can be significantly reinforced for a wider range of applications using the Long-fiber Embedded FRESH (LFE-FRESH) technique, an extension of FRESH by combing fiber embedding and hydrogel 3D printing. However, fibers are prone to buckling under compression load due to the high slenderness ratio and maintaining fiber stability during embedding is vital for LFE-FRESH. In this study, we introduce an integrated computer vision (CV) system for the continuous monitoring and control of LFE-FRESH, which actively adjusts the fiber embedding process in real-time by quantifying fiber deformation from the video data and controlling the fiber extrusion motor. Using the prototype, we demonstrated that the integrated CV system effectively prevents fiber buckling, corrects for over-extrusion during the LFE-FRESH process, and improves fiber embedding quality. Moreover, this technique was implemented with low-cost, mass-produced components and can be conveniently integrated with existing open-source LFE-FRESH software and hardware, which improves its accessibility and facilitates future adaptations for new research applications. © 2022

Recurrent oral ulcer is a painful oral mucosal disorder that affects 20%of the world’s *** lack of a radical cure due to its unknown underlying cause calls for innovative symptomatic *** work reports a hyaluronic acid-based dissolvablemicroneedle patch(ROUMNpatch,short for recurrent oral ulcer microneedle)loaded with dexamethasone acetate,vitamin C and tetracaine hydrochloride for the treatment of recurrent oral *** ROUMN patch shows enhancement in both the anti-inflammatory effect elicited by dexamethasone and the pro-proliferation effect of vitamin *** vitro experiments show that ROUMN has a higher efficiency in suppressing lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-induced interleukin-6(IL-6)expression than dexamethasone *** proliferation and migrationwere also significantly promoted byROUMNcompared to vitamin C *** healing-promoting effect of ROUMN was also verified in vivo using an acetic acid-cauterized oral ulcer model in *** as a treatment accelerated the healing process of oral ulcers,shortening the total healing time to 5 days compared with the 7 days required by treatment using watermelon frost,a commonly used over-the-counter(OTC)drug for oral *** rapid dissolution of the hyaluronic acid-based microneedles and the superior healing-promoting effect of the drug combination could lead to a broad application prospect of the ROUMN patch in the treatment of recurrent oral ulcers.

Nanodroplet-mediated catheter-directed sonothrombolysis of retracted blood clots

One major challenge in current microbubble(MB)and tissue plasminogen activator(tPA)-mediated sonothrombolysis techniques is effectively treating retracted blood clots,owing to the high density and low porosity of retracted ***(NDs)have the potential to enhance retracted clot lysis owing to their small size and ability to penetrate into retracted clots to enhance drug *** the first time,we demonstrate that a sub-megahertz,forwardviewing intravascular(FVI)transducer can be used for ND-mediated sonothrombolysis,in *** this study,we determined the minimum peak negative pressure to induce cavitation with low-boiling point phase change nanodroplets and clot *** then compared nanodroplet mediated sonothrombolysis to MB and tPA mediate *** clot lysis as a percent mass decrease in retracted clots was 9±8%,9±5%,16±5%,14±9%,17±9%,30±8%,and 40±9%for the control group,tPA alone,tPA+US,MB+US,MB+tPA+US,ND+US,and ND+tPA+US groups,*** retracted blood clots,combined ND-and tPA-mediated sonothrombolysis was able to significantly enhance retracted clot lysis compared with traditional MB and tPA-mediated sonothrombolysis *** nanodroplet with tPA-mediated sonothrombolysis may provide a feasible strategy for safely treating retracted clots.

Instability of neural signals is a vital issue in intracortical brain machine interface (iBMI) systems which caused by missing neuron day by day. This study proposed mean-perturbation to impute missing neural spike train during rat forelimb movement. Our results showed that the proposed mean-perturbation for sequence imputation of missing neural spikes was used to enhance the long-term decoding performance. © 2022 IEEE.
