Two-dimensional (2-D) cell culture platforms fail to mimic in vivo physiological functions, such as intercellular interactions [1], so a three-dimensional (3-D) cell structure platform is desired to facilitate physiological insights. We present a new droplet microfluidic platform for the generation of cancer cell spheroids by encapsulation and isolation of Caki-2 cancer cells in droplets based on the higher affinity of the cells to the droplet phase in an aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) droplet microfluidic device. © 2020 CBMS-0001

Dynamics of opinions with bounded confidence in social cliques: Emergence of fluctuations

In this paper, we study the evolution of opinions over social networks with bounded confidence in social cliques. Node initial opinions are independently and identically distributed;at each time step, nodes review the average opinions of a randomly selected local clique. The clique averages may represent local group pressures on peers. Then nodes update their opinions under bounded confidence: only when the difference between an agent individual opinion and the corresponding local clique pressure is below a threshold, this agent opinion is updated according to the DeGroot rule as a weighted average of the two values. As a result, this opinion dynamics is a generalization of the classical Deffuant-Weisbuch model in which only pairwise interactions take place. First of all, we prove conditions under which all node opinions converge to finite limits. We show that in the limits the event that all nodes achieve a consensus, and the event that all nodes achieve pairwise distinct limits, i.e., social disagreements, are both nontrivial events. Next, we show that opinion fluctuations may take place in the sense that at least one agent in the network fails to hold a converging opinion trajectory. In fact, we prove that this fluctuation event happens with a strictly positive probability, and also constructively present an initial value event under which the fluctuation event arises with probability one. These results add to the understanding of the role of bounded confidence in social opinion dynamics, and the possibility of fluctuation reveals that bringing in cliques in Deffuant-Weisbuch models have fundamentally changed the behavior of such opinion dynamical processes. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

Green engineering is increasingly investigated as a possibility to treat organic green material for structural applications. Dendrocalamus asper bamboo culms as green engineering materials were processed to produce composite materials using epoxy resin from a natural treatment by soaking with an average of pH 7.6 level of sea-water. mechanical properties of proposed laminated bamboo composites (LBCs) have been assessed under loading conditions and standards. The study provides a comparison of the structural performance with different conventional timbers as avenue for application in engineering design and practices. Comparison of laminated bamboo with woods indicate that average value of 27.47 MPa and 52.59 MPa for compressive and bending strength respectively, obtained much higher allowable value and average strength, which are comparable to stiffness values of softwoods and hardwoods. However, even though the present study shows properties with higher and comparable to other composite materials, further research must be given better attention for characterization and standardization before acceptance in the marketplace as alternative green engineering material to timber and wood-based composites and other building materials for construction design, and structural elements as composite materials for engineering utilization. © 2019 Technoscience Publications. Environmental factors such as urban air pollutants have detrimental effects on human health. In this research a digital twin (DT) based innovative strategy is presented for accurately forecasting Air Quality Index (AQI) in smart city environment. The historic data of Delhi city is collected, and six different deep learning algorithms are implemented to forecast AQI. The 3D model of the smart city is developed in the Blender, and its urban DT is developed in Microsoft Azure. The InfluxDB database is used for storage and retrieval of time-series data. The experimental results show that the CNN-1D-2 layer model outperforms all other algorithms with MAPE of 0.01231, MSLE of 0.00036, R 2 score reaching 0.99951, and model accuracy of 97.950647. The 3D urban DT model highlights the polluted areas with different colors based on AQI thresholds and DT Grafana dashboard displays the graphical values of AQI and different pollutants along with their trends.

Effect of welding parameters on automated robotic arc welding process

This research focuses on the parameters of robotic welding and robotic welding and creating a DT approach that includes specialized tests for detecting defects in weld tests inline layer-by-layer. Results found that the established weld bead probes were able to locate imperfections from the inspected sample surface at depths up to 6 mm with a thickness as high as 350 μm with the probe up to 6 mm. There are various types of joints, from which test results has been figured out. Manual welding and robotic welding and the correlation between the weld performance of both joints and the comparison of hardness, tensile and impact strength and their microstructure are required. The purpose is to research is comparing weld workpiece of mild steel and mechanical properties and failure mode. Three types of standard tests are performed on the standard samples of mild steel. Results have been obtained from the tests; tensile strength, impact strength and hardness have been measured. The truthfulness of welded joints depends on the microstructure and properties of the weld. Rapid heating, cooling and systemic changes at the local level cause significant changes spatial differences in composition, microstructure, and residual stress in the HAZ. Different physical processes that control welding processes , thus affecting the integrity of the welded structure, can cause severe material damage, resulting in loss of strength and durability, or even structural failure. Expert welding testing helps to make sure your products and processes are acceptable for use.

In this paper, an approach to aid in introductory programming courses is presented, focused on students that had never had any contact with computer programming. The approach, that was introduced in a previous paper [3], presents programming concepts using icons and “flowcharts”, and a 3D robotics simulator (CoppeliaSim), that has free educational use. This time, a real version of the simulated robot, built using Arduino and cheap, easily obtainable electronic components, is also presented. The programs to control the robot are developed by graphically constructing flowcharts on the visual editor, and then following the execution of programs using the simulated (or real) robot, step by step. This graphic program editor is named “FluxProg”, and its 2nd version is now available online, with new features comprising variables, arithmetic and logic expressions, thus providing a complete programming environment.

Future human spaceflight beyond low-Earth orbit will bring substantial changes and new requirements to the development of fully sustainable, healthy indoor human environments across a range of gravitational, radiative, and thermal conditions. One key aspect is understanding (and potentially leveraging) microorganisms that must coexist with humans, plants, and animals in enclosed habitats (their microbiota or microbiomes). Modern, genome-resolved microbiome science provides an opportunity to better understand how we can utilize microbes to optimize space missions and protect human health and well-being long-term. Microorganisms will be critical to mission success due to their direct or indirect interactions with 1) humans, 2) other living systems (e.g., plant and animal life as a food source and for experimentation), and 3) the built environment. For example, the human gut microbiome is a complex community that has important implications for human health and performance that include mental health, nutrition intake, and immune system function. The health of plant microbiomes is also critical for sustainable, dependable, and nutritious food production. Humans, plants, and other living systems (e.g., animals used in experimentation) will also shed microbes into the built environment, which may impact human exposure, plant health, system integrity, and planetary protection from microbial contamination in both forward and reverse directions. Microbes from all three systems will interact, resulting in potentially important 'non-linear' system implications that must be understood for the overall long-term sustainability of hardware, crew, and other living systems. The work is devoted to modeling the phenomenon of superelasticity, that is present in shape memory alloys (SMA), making use of peridynamics. SMA are a type of smart materials, in which solid phase transformations can be activated either by temperature change or external load. As found in the literature, there are known attempts at simulations of phase transformations in SMA introducing the above-mentioned nonlocal modeling technique. The superelasticity specifically refers to reversible phase changes, i.e. austenite-martensite-austenite, observed in SMA due to cyclic external force loading and unloading. As a consequence, the strain-stress characteristics exhibit hysteretic behavior. However, no temperature variation is needed for superelasticity to initiate phase transformations, as it applies in case of both one- and two-way shape memory effects. Having introduced a peridynamic model for a solid body made of SMA, quasi-static numerical calculations are performed to build a stress-strain characteristics. The reference for the obtained results is provided with the outcomes from finite element analyses. Currently, energy needs are one of the sources of human life that cannot be separated. Energy can be classified into two, energy sourced from fossils of living things and plants, with high rice production, making gasification tools an alternative to the use of rice husks into energy. Gasification is a thermochemical process of converting solid fuels into gas thus gasification using this resource is itself a renewable energy. This research is experimental. The air flow rate valve is set at speed = 2.2 m/s for the glowplug variation 3, 2.5m/s for the glowplug variation 4, 2.6m/s for the glowplug variation 5, 2.9 m/s for the glowplug variation 6 with Air Fuel Ratio (AFR)) 0.7%, 0.8%, 0.9%, 1%. With the glowplug variation, the highest temperature is up to 888°C with 1% AFR.
