We define the research fields of experiential signal processing (ESP) and experiential telecommunications (ET), which are concerned with sensing, communicating, and presenting an Environment, Event, or Experience at a distance. We develop our vision of ESP and ET and describe key components and research fields. We highlight the challenges of presenting multichannel, multimedia information and present an example for panoramic video using the Allosphere, a 3-story sphere housed in an anechoic chamber, that has been constructed at UCSB.

Real time embedded controller design for safety control of PWR nuclear power reactor

Microcontroller based embedded controllers are gaining popularity because they require minimal interfacing hardware. Based on this trend the paper at hand describes the design and implementation of real time safety control of the PWR nuclear power reactor. We have not only replaced an analog neutron density level controller with the embedded one, but also implemented all of the safety controls within the same controller. Honeywell's HT83C51 microcontroller has been used with A/D RS7581JN to capture data from sensors and implement the desired control strategy. The performance parameters for evaluating the controller are maximum operating frequency, operating current and output drive voltage for controlled modules and peripherals.

The IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC) conference was held in Athens, Greece from September 3-7, 2007. The 18th series event is sponsored by the ComSoc and the Institute of Communication and computer Systems (ICCS) of the National Technical University of Athens. The theme of the conference is on mastering "Wireless Entropy", pertaining to the pool of technologies and services that populate the contemporary telecommunications landscape. The event received over 1200 manuscripts for review wherein 518 papers were approved for oral presentation. There were 48 papers for special sessions in addition to 44 invited papers and 180 poster presentations. The technical sessions concentrated around three main streams including physical layer and MAC, mobile and wireless networks and application, services and business models.

Due to the Web's continued growth, the need for flexibility, adaptability and rapid response time to user query has assumed greater importance in information service systems. The dynamics of information services are constantly changing. The users demand and expect a "flawless any time anywhere" service availability standard. The client-server model of distributed computing in vogue is increasingly becoming inefficient in coping with the rising demand of information services. Faded information field (FIF) architecture with Push and Pull mobile agent technologies was proposed recently addresses these issues effectively. FIF balances the cost of information service provision and utilization where service provider (SP) fades the information contents through Push-MAs and the user sends in Pull-MAs to search the requisite information. In this work, a simulation engine was programmed to mimic the physical parameters of the system in terms of routers, servers and the level of information faded. Simulations were performed to determine the average delay of information distribution in the system under varying parameters of the system like servers, and the number of levels in which the information is faded in the system. It is demonstrated that the size of FIF along with the levels of information fading have a direct influence on the information retrieval function in the information service system.

With the advancement of wireless networks and mobile access devices such as cell phones and PDAs, multimedia services could be offered through wireless broadcast networks to these mobile devices. Therefore, there is a need to securely deliver multimedia content/data to many users over an insecure channel. Broadcast encryption scheme could provide this solution. The first formal study of broadcast encryption scheme is by Fiat and Noar in 1993. Since then, many broadcast encryption schemes have been proposed to improve the efficiency which is measured by three parameters, that is, length of transmission messages, users' storage and computational overhead at a user device. Some broadcast encryption schemes require less users storage, but the length of transmission messages or computation overhead depends on the number of users. In this paper, we proposed an authenticated broadcast encryption scheme which has an additional property than current proposed broadcast encryption schemes, that is, all users can verify who the sender is. The proposed scheme is proved to be secure against chosen ciphertext attacks based on the decision l-bilinear Diffie-Hellman exponent assumption. Furthermore, the simulation results, transmission messages nearly independent of the number of users and reasonable user storage show that the proposed authenticated broadcast encryption scheme is efficient and suitable for mobile devices.

A light weight enhancement to RC4 based security for resource constrained wireless devices

The Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) uses the 64 bit RC4 secret key stream cipher as its layer 2 security pro- tocol. Although the underlying RC4 cipher is secure, the potential reuse of the same key stream by different frames is a weakness in the WEP. One enhancement to WEP is the Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP), which acts as a wrapper to the WEP protocol and uses a 128 bit RC4 encryption to eliminate the possibility of key reuse within a given session. However, TKIP cannot be gain- fully employed in devices where the 64 bit RC4 encryp- tion is hardwired. Also, with 128 bit encryption TKIP can secure 1030 frames per session. Comparing this to the typical number of frames per session (500-1000), it is easy to see that the use of a 128 bit key causes unneces- sary drain of power. The Wifi Protected Access (WPA), uses a 128 bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) ci- pher in the Counter-Mode-CBC-MAC Protocol (CCMP). This protocol requires higher computational power than the TKIP and is only intended for devices which possess higher computational power and memory. In this paper, we propose a light weight enhancement to the 64 bit WEP, which provides significant improve- ment in security (measured as the number of frames se- curely transmitted before base key change) with small en- ergy and memory overhead. Moreover, our technique can be tailored to the specific needs of resource constrained environments to provide just the necessary level of secu- rity. We use the Intrinsyc CerfCube1 as a resource con- strained wireless device and measure the resource con- sumed by various wireless security protocols on this de- vice. From the experimental results we see that proposed LWE consumes about 62% less power compared to TKIP and 99% less power compared CCMP (AES), while pro-viding a security enhancement of 232 over the WEP pro- tocol. These results demonstrate the utility of LWE as a good security protocol for wireless networks with battery power constrained devices and

The convenience and flexibility of wireless networks to allow clients (user nodes) to be connected to the network at any place and any time have resulted in the growth and increased popularity of wireless networks. Access control in wireless networks is very important to prevent unauthorized users from accessing the network. Besides this, client anonymity and resistance to Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks are also important and should be provided by access control protocols for wireless networks. Password-based authentication provide good solutions for access control protocols, however they usually do not provide client identity confidentiality and DoS resistance. In this paper, we review a DoS-resistant anonymous access control (AAC) protocol and point out that the protocol does not provide protection against three different DoS attacks. We then propose a new DoS-resistant AAC protocol that avoids the flaws of the previous protocol. Our proposed protocol also provides client anonymity and protection against DoS attacks. A security and complexity analysis shows that our proposed protocol is secure and efficient for access control in wireless networks.

The unique characteristic of a repetitive process is a series of sweeps or passes through a set of dynamics defined over a finite duration known as the pass length. At the end of each pass, the process is reset and the next time through the output, or pass profile, produced on the previous pass acts as a forcing function on, an hence contributes to, the dynamics of the new pass profile. They are hence a class of systems with information propagation in two independent directions where here the dynamics over the finite pass length are described by a matrix linear differential equation and that from pass to pass has a discrete updating structure. This means that filtering/estimation theory/algorithms for, in particular, 2D discrete linear systems is not applicable. In this paper we solve a general filtering problem with a view toward use in the many applications where such action will be required. © 2007 EURASIP.

computer algebra system (CAS) applications are mathematical applications developed with the purpose of solving mathematical problems which are too difficult or even impossible to solve by hand. Modern versions of CAS applications are known for their rather large set of features such as support for graphical representations of results, symbolic manipulation, big-integer calculations, and complex-number arithmetic. The proposed idea in developing framework for a mathematical tool with CAS capability is derived from the motivation of object oriented design that integrate each application process in terms of an independent object module. Additional motivation is scalability and interface, meaning more functionality can be integrated without changing any core existed module, that is just create a new object and plug in.
