As a combination of time and frequency modeling,sparse atomic representation provides a means for effective and interesting time-frequency modifications of signals. A drawback is the intensive computation required to find the representation. New tools however greatly speed the process and facilitate experimentation with real signals. We have experimented with the modification of audio signals, specifically pitch-shifting, using sparse atomic approximations found by the matching pursuit algorithm. A na ve approach,where phase is not taken into account, produces surprisingly good results for signals having soft or no *** artifact sounding like amplitude modulation appears however, which we show can be reduced by a phase optimization algorithm. Finally we discuss a more sophisticated approach to time-frequency modifications in general using atomic representations. © 2006 ACM.

Heterogeneous wireless networks are gaining popularity as users can be connected to these networks without any cables and even when they are mobile. The high power nodes in heterogeneous wireless networks do not have energy constraints but the user nodes, which can be large in numbers, are usually low power energy constrained devices. Therefore, the GKA protocol used to secure group communications in these networks has to take into consideration both the low power nature of the user nodes and the network size. In this paper, we present an energy efficient and scalable GKA protocol, which uses our proposed Contributory Ring-Centralized (ContRi-Central) group model. Besides providing complexity analysis, we also show the computational and communication energy consumption costs analysis of all nodes running our proposed scheme and four other efficient GKA protocols. Both the complexity analysis and energy consumption costs analysis indicate that our proposed scheme is more efficient and suitable for heterogeneous wireless networks. Copyright 2006 ACM.

One useful application of wireless networks is for secure group communication, which can be achieved by running a Group Key Agreement (GKA) protocol. One well-known method of providing authentication in GKA protocols is through the use of digital signatures. Traditional certificate-based signature schemes require users to receive and verify digital certificates before verifying the signatures but this process is not required in ID-based signature schemes. In this paper, we present an energy-efficient ID-based authenticated GKA protocol and four energy-efficient ID-based authenticated dynamic protocols, namely Join, Leave, Merge and Partition protocol, to handle dynamic group membership events, which are frequent in wireless networks. We provide complexity and energy cost analysis of our protocols and show that our protocols are more energy-efficient and suitable for wireless networks. © 2006 IEEE.

media delivery over lossy packet networks is a challenging problem, and forward error correction (FEC) based techniques are an important technique for overcoming packet loss. Conventional FEC-based media delivery techniques protect all packets equally, or protect a subset of the packets, or protect different subsets of packets with different levels of protection, e.g., scalable coding with unequal error protection (UEP). This paper proposes an FEC-based technique to maximize the expected received media quality by explicitly discarding packets, when beneficial, in order to provide additional room for FEC. Given knowledge of the importance of each packet, we show that there is a simple and intuitive criterion for the optimal selection of which packets to discard and which to protect, as well as the level of protection, to minimize the expected distortion experienced at the receiver. The proposed approach provides significant gains over the conventional approaches, and these gains are illustrated for the case of sending H.264 coded video data over a packet erasure channel with known packet loss rate.

This paper introduces a novel dynamic availability-aware survivable routing architecture in the modern communication networks, which aims to provide much finer design granularity by having a partially restorative protection path for a working path. Simulation is conducted to verify the proposed scheme on a special case where a single protection path is equipped to each working path, where an integer linear program (ILP) is formulated and solved for the highlighted problem. A number of legacy schemes that focus on achieving 100% restorability in a specific failure scenario, such as no protection, shared path protection (SPP), 1+1 protection, and dual-failure protection, are also taken in the simulation for comparison. In the case study, we have seen merits in the proposed architecture which can significantly reduce the required redundancy in the effort of achieving a specific availability constraint for each connection request

This paper introduces a new dynamic availability-aware survivable routing scheme under the framework of generalized multi-protocol label switching (GMPLS)-based recovery, which aims to achieve the best generality for the network operation in meeting the end-to-end (E2E) availability requirement of each connection. The paper first defines the partial restorability, justifies the feasibility of equipping a connection with partial restorability under the GMPLS control plane, and highlights the approach of evaluating the E2E availability for a pair of working and partially restorative SRG (shared risk group)-disjoint shared backup label switched paths (LSPs). A compact matrix expression is developed for modeling the minimum spare capacity along each link and the cost function for solving both of the paths. Based on the developed cost function, a novel integer linear program (ILP) is formulated to dynamically determine the working and backup LSPs of the corresponding connection request with the least amount of total capacity while the E2E availability requirement of the connection is met. We demonstrate that the model is general to the traffic uniformity, connection indivisibility, and working bandwidth restorability compared with the previous studies. Simulation is conducted to verify the proposed ILP model by making a comparison with a number of legacy schemes that achieve 100% restorability in facing a specific number of simultaneous failures, such as shared path protection (SPP), 1+1 protection, and dual-failure protection. In the case study, we have seen merits in the proposed algorithm by significantly reducing the required redundancy in the effort of achieving the given availability constraint for each connection request.

This paper discusses the reason why QEA works and verifies how QEA works. The theoretical analysis of the simplified model of the segment process of QEA shows that QEA with a single individual for OneMax problem guarantees the global solution in terms of expected running number of generations. The analysis for exploration shows clearly that QEA starts with a global search scheme and changes automatically into a local search scheme as generation advances because of its inherent probabilistic mechanism, which leads to a good balance between exploration and exploitation. For comparison purpose, simulated annealing is considered with three test functions. The results support the conclusions derived from the theoretical analysis of QEA with a single individual.

This paper presents an efficient fuzzy cognitive modeling which can handle granulation, organisation and causation. This cognitive modeling technique consists of multiple levels where the lowest level includes details required to make a decision or to transfer to the next stage. This fuzzy cognitive modeling will enhance the usability of fuzzy theory in modeling complex systems as well as facilitating complex decision making process based on ill structured or missing information or data.

This paper addresses the problem of stability for two-dimensional systems with delays in the state. To solve this problem, the Lyapunov second method is used. The resulting condition is written in terms of linear matrix inequalities and it is dependent on the size of delays. This fact allows us to reduce the conservatism in the stability analysis of two-dimensional systems with state delays. A simulation example is given to illustrate the theoretical developments
