Typically, two's complement is chosen to represent numbers since arithmetic operations of addition and subtraction are easy to perform. However, due to sign extension, an arithmetic operation for small dynamic data ranges may require switching power in the entire word length. Herein, we develop a two's complement adder with the dynamic-range determination and sign-extension units to reduce power consumption. According to the actual data range by minimizing sign-extension bits, only partial functional blocks of an adder are active to generate a final result of which sign bit is then extended to match the original word length. Experimental results demonstrate that our 32-bit carry-lookahead adder has 22.9% power reduction than the conventional one while dynamic ranges of input data are the Gaussian distribution with a mean of 16 bits and a standard deviation of 8 bits.

Disaster rescue is one of the most serious social issue which involves very large numbers of heterogeneous agents in the hostile environment. RoboCup-Rescue intends to promote research and development in this socially significant domain by creating a standard simulator and forum for researchers and practitioners. While the rescue domain intuitively appealing as large scale multi-agent domains, it has not yet given through analysis on its domain characteristics. In this paper, we present detailed analysis on the task domain and elucidate characteristics necessary for multi-agent systems for this domain.

A highly-scaleable FIR architecture based on the radix-4 Booth algorithm has been designed with scaleable dynamic ranges of input data and filter coefficients. The radix-4 Booth algorithm is demonstrated to have a lower hardware complexity and a fairer throughput rate than the other radix approaches. In order to achieve scaleability, the configurable-connection function between latches of input data, and filter taps has been explored. The precision of filter coefficients is adjustable by using a path-control function. Especially, the proposed architecture only employs data-path controls to realize the scaleable issue without changing the word lengths and components of input latches and filter taps. The pre-processing unit for manipulating input data and post-processing unit for computing accumulation results have been realized to support scaleable operations. Based on our architecture in a chip design, the cascaded configuration between chips is also easily accomplished for many industrial applications. © 1998 IEEE.

We present here a novel multiresolution-based image segmentation algorithm. The proposed method extends and improves the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) paradigm by incorporating a multiscale correlation model of pixel dependence into the standard approach. In particular, the standard GMM is modified by introducing a multiscale neighborhood clique that incorporates the correlation between pixels in space and scale. We modify the log likelihood function of the image field by a penalization term that is derived from a multiscale neighborhood clique. Maximum likelihood (ML) estimation via the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm is used to estimate the parameters of the new model. Then, utilizing the parameter estimates, the image field is segmented with a MAP classifier. It is demonstrated that the proposed algorithm provides superior segmentations of synthetic images, yet is computationally efficient.

In this paper, we demonstrate that a window-based Gaussian mixture model can be applied in the development of a robust nonlinear filter for image restoration. Via the EM algorithm, we utilize ML estimation of the spatially-varying model parameters to achieve the desired noise suppression and detail preservation. We demonstrate that this approach is a powerful tool which gives us information about the local statistics of noisy images. We demonstrate that the estimated local statistics can be efficiently utilized for outlier detection and edge detection. The advantage of our algorithm is that it can simultaneously suppress additive Gaussian and impulsive noise, while preserving fine details and edges.

A design interface for efficiently exploring and subsequently refining a synthesized musical instrument is proposed. Results are reported that compare the performance of this design interface with others and it is argued that the proposed technique is superior in several areas including sensitivity and time-to-design. Using this design interface, questions of instrument constancy are explored, i.e., what acoustic features inform the listener that the same instrument is playing but in a different register or performance style. Results for changes in fundamental frequency are presented. © 1996 ICMC. All Rights Reserved.

Human vision, machine vision, and image coding, all have to deal with the problem of finding representations that are useful and efficient. The best-known techniques are based on low-level processing, using signal processing concepts such as filters, transforms, and simple non-linearities. Low-level concepts are at the heart of standard vision systems for computing optic flow, texture, etc. Low-level image coding techniques include DCTs, pyramids, wavelets, etc. To advance to a new generation of image coding architectures one must work with new image representations that involve such concepts as surfaces, lighting, transparency, etc. These representations fall in the domain of "mid-level" vision. By representing images with these more sophisticated vocabularies one can increase the flexibility and efficiency of the vision and image coding systems. The authors decompose an image sequence into a set of overlapping layers, rather like the "cels" used by a traditional animator. These layers are ordered in depth, sliding over one another and being combined according to the rules of transparency and occlusion. For some test sequences the authors achieve data compression far better than is possible with standard techniques such as MPEG.< >

Software performance engineering aims at predicting and improving the performance of applications during development and in production. This paper presents a framework for performance engineering of information systems with emphasis on parameter estimation support. The need for performance engineering of information systems is discussed. Views of information system and performance modelling are presented. It is shown how application specifcations can be extended with performance annotations. The resulting framework is applied to predict and improve the performance of projected applications during development. Sensitivity analysis is supported to point out performance bottlenecks in the application and suggest which parameters to estimate with most care. Target platform modelling is provided to relieve the information system developer from assessing the performance of the target platform and operating system software. The framework is realised in terms of the PrM language for software specification. Finally, some conclusions are offered. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1992.
