Using drawing as a tool for investigating undergraduate conceptions of Earth scientists

The purpose of this study was to investigate undergraduate students’ conceptions of Earth scientists, using drawing as a tool, during introductory Earth science courses. We explored two research questions: 1) What student conceptions are evident in undergraduate students’ drawings of Earth scientists? and 2) How do undergraduate students’ conceptions of Earth scientists—as evidenced in their drawings—change as a result of completing an introductory Earth science course? We collected pre- and post-drawings of Earth scientists from 94 students in six introductory Earth science courses at two universities and coded the 188 drawings across 39 indicators. We used Chi Square Goodness of Fit Tests to identify significant shifts between pre- and post-drawings and effect sizes with Cohen’s W. Twelve indicators demonstrated higher frequencies and eleven indicators showed significant change (with small, medium, and large effects) between the pre- to post-drawings collected at the beginning and end of each course. The results suggest that unsophisticated conceptions exist, especially at the beginning of an introductory Earth science course. Yet overall, findings indicate that in the courses from which we drew our data, most students had an informed view of Earth science as a field and the work of Earth scientists. Additionally, student ideas about Earth scientists primarily investigating rocks, minerals, and soil, expanded to include other areas of investigation such as the atmosphere and bodies of water. We propose that drawings can serve as an additional valuable tool in an instructor’s toolbox for understanding students’ conceptions of Earth scientists, which has important implications for instruction and curriculum design. © 2023 National Association of Geoscience Teachers.

The analysis of various sources has been carried out, confirming the demand for protective solutions against information threats from fake websites of organizations. The relevance of the research topic is confirmed by the presence of addresses similar in spelling to popular educational Internet resources in the list of domain names of the RU zone registered over the past year. When developing security solutions, it is proposed to use a site verifying the genuineness method based on the use of machine learning algorithms. A review of research by various authors has been conducted in order to determine the most frequently used features for verifying the genuineness of Internet resources in the machine learning models. The authors propose their own verifying the genuineness features that can be used in a situation where data about an Internet resource is extracted from the domain name registry. The proposed features differ from the known ones in that they contain signs of micro-markup on the site and storage of site settings files for search engines on servers. The developed features were tested using a naive Bayesian classifier as a machine learning algorithm. The proposed features can be used in the implementation of a software tool to counteraction threats from fake educational sites.

Pedagogical scientists often need to process the results of a pedagogical experiment. The purpose of the article is to reveal the features of the architecture and structure of the application for statistical processing of the results of a pedagogical experiment. To statistically process the results of a pedagogical experiment, we have developed an application that provides the calculation of Mann-Whitney, Pearson, and Student criteria. For the application, we chose the modular architecture, which is a hierarchical structure. Due to the component-oriented approach, it is possible to modernize and expand the application's functionality. The application can read data from a text file, an XLSX file, a database, or a table in the main form of the application.

The study of the educational process of university students has revealed their need for more engagement in class. They seem unable to absorb material that does not require a certain level of mental tension, negatively affecting their academic performance and competence. Therefore, there is a need to develop pedagogical technology to optimize the educational process. We analyzed the educational process at the National University 'Odesa Law Academy' in 2020-2023. We evaluated the effectiveness of ways and means of enhancing the academic and cognitive skills of 150 full-time IT students during their study of professional-oriented courses. We have improved students' educational and mental activities by optimizing the educational process through personalized problem-based learning, utilizing professionally oriented problem situations, and providing favorable motivational and emotional support. We confirmed the reliability of the research results using descriptive statistics. © 2024 IEEE.

Reform efforts in K-12 science education have been gaining pace ever since the introduction of the Next Generation science Standards (NGSS). The new vision calls for reconsidering teacher preparation programs to prepare future teachers who are confident and competent in delivering NGSS-based instruction. This study investigated the development of 27 preservice secondary science and mathematics teachers’ (PSTs’) knowledge and skills as they understand, interpret, and implement the NGSS, particularly science and engineering practices (SEPs), within the context of microteaching during a STEM methods course. Primary data sources include 12 videos of 40-min-long microteaching lessons, self-reflections, semi-structured and focus-group interviews, and artifacts such as student-designed science lesson plans. This qualitative study utilizes deductive-inductive and thematic analysis approaches to analyze PSTs microteaching videos to understand how various SEPs were enacted and integrated within the science lessons. While the average duration of the occurrence of each SEP varied, SEP 1 (Asking questions) showed the least occurrence compared to other SEPs across lessons. Most PSTs reported a better understanding of the NGSS framework at the end of the semester and found it a useful tool for planning a science lesson. Effective training is essential for enhancing users' ability to detect phishing attempts. Personalised training offers huge potential to more closely align training content with individuals' needs and skill levels. In an online study, we assigned N=342 participants to personalised training or a random training variant to compare their effectiveness. The personalisation was based on a phishing proficiency score calculated from factors such as detection ability, knowledge, and security attitude. After training, the participants demonstrated greater proficiency, with an increased ability to detect phishing emails and higher security attitudes. These effects were most pronounced in the personalised condition, demonstrating the potential of personalisation to improve training outcomes. Overall, personalised training levelled the playing field, efficiently bringing all groups, regardless of their initial proficiency, to a comparable and desired post-training phishing proficiency level. Finally, we derived recommendations for designing personalised phishing training content and assigning users to suitable training programmes. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Poisonous weeds invade ecosystems and compete with edible forage grassland, changing the population spatial distribution. In this paper, a discrete population competition model for the interaction between poisonous weeds and edible forage grass is established, and a diffusion coefficient to describe the invasion and diffusion effect of poisonous weeds is introduced. By using cellular automata methods, the influence of invasive diffusion of poisonous weeds on the spatial distribution of poisonous weed and edible forage populations is simulated. These findings indicated that the invasion of poisonous weeds affected the ecological distribution of grassland, and that the spatial distribution of poisonous weeds also changed from initial uniform distribution to aggregated distribution. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Intending to introduce a method for the topological analysis of fields, we present a pipeline that takes as an input a weighted and based chain complex, produces a factored chain complex, and encodes it as a barcode of tagged intervals (briefly, a tagged barcode). We show how to apply this pipeline to the weighted and based Morse chain complex of a gradient-like Morse-Smale vector field on a compact Riemannian manifold in both the smooth and discrete settings. Interestingly for computations, it turns out that there is an isometry between factored chain complexes endowed with the interleaving distance and their tagged barcodes endowed with the bottleneck distance. Concerning stability, we show that the map taking a generic enough gradient-like vector field to its barcode of tagged intervals is continuous. Finally, we prove that the tagged barcode of any such vector field can be approximated by the tagged barcode of a combinatorial version of it with arbitrary *** Codes 55N31, 37B35, 57R25 Copyright © 2024, The Authors.
