PPCA: Privacy-Preserving Continuous Authentication Scheme With Consistency Proof for Zero-Trust Architecture Networks

Continuous authentication has been widely applied by network service providers to verify user identities in finance, healthcare, and e-commerce fields. However, in next-generation networks, continuous authentication faces the risk of user privacy leakage due to its dependence on a verifier-centric authentication model, and verifiers may not always be trustworthy, particularly in zero-trust architecture networks. Existing privacy protection schemes face challenges in solving this problem because these schemes will weaken the linkability of context requests, leading to difficulties in consistency checks for fine-grained continuous authentication. To fill the gap, this paper proposes a privacy-preserving continuous authentication (PPCA) scheme by incorporating anonymous self-sovereign identity and fine-grained continuous authentication. Specifically, PPCA exploits subset proof to enable users to reveal only the minimum necessary identity data for selective disclosure. To support fine-grained continuous authentication, we construct a new consistency proof for the anonymous user to prove that the different credentials are bound to the same attributes set, where the user is responsible for deciding whether to send the consistency proof. PPCA is formalized defined and constructed based on BLS signatures, Set Commitment, and Sigma Protocol. The security analysis shows that PPCA is correct and sound and supports user anonymity and credential consistency at the same time. The performance evaluation shows that PPCA requires only minimal additional time cost, achieving an optimal balance between security and efficiency. © 2014 IEEE.

Battery Service-Life Enhancement Using Temporal Data Partitioning Mechanism for Sustainable IoT Applications

Majority of event-driven IoT applications in wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSN) nodes often acquire redundant data of the same target or event, which show a very high degree of temporal correlation, and causes high consumption of energy due to transmission of redundant information;resulting a massive depletion of battery sources of the sensor node and reduces its service-life. To mitigate this issue, this paper presents a novel twofold encoding scheme to tackle the problem of highly temporally correlated data acquisition by sensor devices and redundant data transmission in smart IoT applications. The scheme first employs the Kruskal–Wallis Hypothesis test to partition the data, followed by encoding the data using the Redundant Binary Number System (RBNS) produces high proportion of 0 s in the encoded string. This in turn increases Silent Symbol period during transmission. To further conserve energy, a hybrid FSK-ASK modulation and demodulation technique is employed during communication with a non-coherent receiver, leading to a significant reduction in transmitter energy. We simulate the proposed raw sensor data encoding technique exploiting runs of individual encoded symbols of real-life sensor data source with commercially available transceiver Atmel ATR 2406. The simulation result shows about 0.041 mW h energy consumption per day employing Atmel ATR 2406 transceiver utilizing our proposed scheme which is about 58.0–83.6% less consumption compared to popular communication schemes like CNS, PCA, NCS, and ALDC schemes, respectively. The proposed idea also extended the CR2032 lithium coin cell battery life of the sensor module to 2.41 years which is 58–83% more compared to existing schemes, and resulted in a reduced CO ₂ emission rate of 0.036 mg/day, making the scheme environmentally sustainable. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

RAHA Beverages Company (RABEC) is one of the banana wine production companies that utilizes fuel in steam production in Arusha-Tanzania, where fuel data conditions such as temperature, pressure, discharge, fuel level, and gas leakage with humidity were a challenge to monitor, which provoked boiler malfunction and plant breakdown. Today, RABEC manually uses a dropping stick into the fuel tank to monitor fuel data conditions which is time-consuming and gives inaccurate readings, inefficiency, fuel economy discrepancy, and accidents. This study aimed to design and develop an IoT-based fuel monitoring system. The flow meter, ultrasonic level, thermistor fuel temperature, humidity, and pressure sensors were used to gather fuel information where the GSM module was employed to send fuel data messages to the operator’s phone. An AT mega 328 microcontroller was used to process and analyse the fuel data and send them to the Thing Speak IoT platform using Wi-Fi connectivity. The results showed that when the fuel level was less than the threshold value, an operator was alerted by a refilling message via GSM technology. A pressure of 0.1psi, a fuel temperature of 120 ℃, and 80% of humidity, the system notifies the operator by an alert message to check the injector pressure and if the fuel–air mixture is perfect. In addition, these data were observed on the LCD and ThingSpeak webpage. To conclude, the developed system proved the best performance with a 99.98% of success rate with high accuracy, security, and efficiency rate compared to the current monitoring system. © The Author(s) 2023.

Localization is the process of obtaining the location of a wireless node in indoor/outdoor setting or environment. In the recent age of Internet of Things (IoT), localization is important to provide communication, connection and efficient inter-networking between various devices. Global Positioning System is a popular approach to solve the localization problem. But unfortunately, it has considerable energy consumption, requires an unobstructed line of sight to satellites and costly if attached to every node in IoT. Localization using link-quality values can be an alternate solution. While being able to avoid single point failures, emerging decentralized security techniques are facing new challenges of reliability, robustness, and privacy preservation in blockchain-enabled Internet-of-Things (IoT) systems. To circumvent these issues, a zero-trust security scheme is proposed through distributed access control, enhanced authentication, dynamic authorization, and privacy preservation enabled by the consortium blockchain. The proposed scheme integrates three key components, i.e., a distributed recommendation mechanism, where multiple authorized nodes are utilized as referrers to efficiently confer their trust on a new public entity for enhanced authentication;an anonymous credential generation strategy, which is developed for the new entity to further protect its privacy from linking attacks;and an adaptive reputation update strategy, which is proposed for evaluating the nodes' behaviors in the system for accountability and dynamic multiple-level authorization. The proposed scheme is implemented in a Hyperledge Fabric and the results show that it significantly enhances security and protects private information. © 2014 IEEE.

Physical-layer secret key generation (PKG) is an emerging technique for secret key sharing. However, researches on it rarely consider the issue of energy efficiency, which results in a limited performance gain at the expense of a large amount of consumed energy. In this paper, we define the secret key energy efficiency (KEE) as the ratio of the generated secret key bits to the total energy consumption in the resource constrained PKG system. An optimization problem with quality of service (QoS) requirement and power consumption constraints is formulated and a multi-layer iterative algorithm to maximize the KEE is proposed. To cope with the difficulty of the non-convex problem, we transform and iterate it until it is equivalent to the primal problem by applying the Dinkelbach algorithm. In each iteration, the penalty algorithm and difference-of-convex-functions (DC) programming algorithm are used to tackle the non-convex constraints and objectives, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate that the KEE which is maximized can be 84% higher than that of the secret key rate (SKR) maximization only at the cost of a 5% decrease in SKR. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper, a low-complexity and low-cost hard-ware model of a novel source encoding scheme termed Dualmessage Compression with Variable Null Symbol (DCVNS) is presented. Our recommended DCVNS approach addresses the process of interleaving of message bits originating from different sources, or from different sensing times of the same source. This interleaved message's two successive bits are encoded and rendered by one of four symbol values, leading in a twofold reduction in the overall message length. Because Silent communication is being used, the transmitter is maintained in deep-sleep state throughout the interim time of the high frequent dominant symbol appearing in the source-coded message during transmission. Our proposed design shows the hardware detail about the selection of the most dominating symbol which is dynamic in nature. Furthermore, the transmitter employs lowcost hybrid modulation/demodulation features integrating noncoherent FSK and ASK, designed to work in low-power and cost-effective transmission mode. Our proposed model is extremely suitable for circumstances in which a receiver node collects temporal or spatial data from two sources and transfers it to a sink node in most of the smart IoT applications. © 2022 IEEE.

Now, the world is struggling through an unexpected adverse situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Governments are spending significant resources so that people can get rid of the disease and develop and maintain their health. Healthy lifestyle and disease preclusion are a socio-economic issue now. According to WHO [1], diet is an important factor to gain immunity and protect people from severe ailments. Therefore, it is required to stay acquainted with the equation between a balanced diet and a healthy life. Unfortunately, in the developing countries like India, there is no proper dietary assessment system specially for the rural people. The popular traditional manual approaches are biased, subjective and inaccurate. Our aim is to develop a low-cost, power-aware novel framework for an automated dietary monitoring system using wearable sensors that can monitor eating habits, food intake, nutritional content of the food and calorie intake along with a feedback to the user. Air pollution can affect human health, so it is necessary to predict the air quality index (AQI) in advance. In this work, air quality data collected by the Internet of Drone Things (IoDT) is predicted and analyzed to detect highly polluted zones using a distributed privacy-preserving federated learning (FL) approach. Air quality data for a particular zone is collected and then fed into a Long short-Term memory (LSTM) based model to predict the pollution level in local training. Global aggregation is done by an IoDT-mounted central server to aggregate the received models from the local IoDT level. Privacy-preserving FedHZone predicts and analyses the AQI values from the past time series dataset in a multi-drone environment. This work detects the most hazardous zone in a larger region of Jaipur, Rajasthan using real-Time data. The result shows FedHZone with stacked LSTM having ''2%-7% better accuracy than the vanilla LSTM-based model. © 2024 IEEE.
