Traditional computing employs client/server architectures where the client software can issue service requests to the server. Cloud computing offers the ability to transparently provide computing services remotely to users through the Internet, freeing them of the burdens associated with managing computing resources and facilities. In order to fully exploit the benefits of computing and network progress, the simulation community must identify and resolve the challenges of distributing the next generation of modeling and simulation architectures among cloud computing enterprises.

The occurrence of a natural disaster is generally characterized not only by the tremendous physical and material damage, but also by the substantial social and economic impact on the affected communities. Over the years, the research community has attempted to investigate the different dimensions of these events so that these incidents may be understood and appropriate procedures that properly assess and deal with these occurrences may be developed. A critical question in this context relates to the regional ability to deal with the disaster and organize responders, communities, and equipment to mitigate the adverse effects that stem from the occurrence of these incidents. Emergency Management and Humanitarian Logistics provide tools and knowledge that assist decision makers in preparing for the occurrence of a catastrophic event while coping with the material and humanitarian response. This paper provides an overview of some of the most relevant modeling efforts discussed in the literature related to this topic. Opportunities for the application of modeling and simulation (M&S) in specific areas of humanitarian logistics and emergency management are presented.

The first undergraduate degree program in modeling and simulationengineering currently is being implemented at Old Dominion University. The program will award the Bachelor of Science in modeling and simulationengineering (BS-M&SE) and is designed to meet the ABET accreditation requirements for general engineering programs. This paper describes the design of an assessment process for evaluating the level of student achievement in the program's student learning outcomes. Several performance measures are defined for each outcome and rubrics for evaluating each performance measure on a four-level scale are presented. Then a curriculum content map is developed and used to associate student outcomes to course content components, identifying outcome coverage by the curriculum.

Results for ab initio no-core shell model calculations in a symmetry-adapted SU(3)-based coupling scheme demonstrate that collective modes in light nuclei emerge from first principles. The low-lying states of Li6, Be8, and He6 are shown to exhibit orderly patterns that favor spatial configurations with strong quadrupole deformation and complementary low intrinsic spin values, a picture that is consistent with the nuclear symplectic model. The results also suggest a pragmatic path forward to accommodate deformation-driven collective features in ab initio analyses when they dominate the nuclear landscape.

Results are presented from an NSF supported project that is geared towards advancing the development and use of virtual reality (VR) laboratories, designed to emulate the learning environment of physical laboratories. As part of this project, an experiment in the undergraduate thermo-fluids laboratory course titled "Jet Impact Force" was transformed into a 3-D virtual reality experiment using the widely used MAYAR and VIRTOOLS R software. In order to facilitate students' interactions with the newly created 3-D interactive, immersive and stereoscopic virtual laboratory environment, the human computer interfaces (HCI) were programmed and incorporated in the simulation software. Two immersion levels were included in the VR experiment to assess their impact on student learning. The first one namely the desktop virtual reality (DTVR) used a computer and a 3-D TV for display while the CAVE virtual reality (CVR) employed a computer in conjunction with a three-wall CAVE (acronym for Cave Automatic Virtual Environment) for visualizing the simulation. The above said VR experiment was embedded in the thermo-fluids laboratory course in the mechanical engineering curriculum at Old Dominion University (ODU) so that it could be used in the supplementation mode for the pre-lab practice sessions prior to the physical experiment sessions. To test the efficacy of this supplementation pedagogy for enhancement of student learning, both quantitative (quiz) as well as qualitative (direct observation and student survey) assessment instruments were used. Of the three objectives set for this study two, namely the development and implementation of VR experiment and the assessment of impact of immersion levels on student learning were fully achieved. Assessment results also showed that the "CVR" module resulted in a higher level of student learning when compared with the "DTVR" module. The third objective, namely the assessment of the VR experiment in enhancing student learning in the suppleme

In recent years, a number of modeling and simulation graduate programs have been initiated to address the growing demand in industry and government for engineers and scientists educated in this discipline. However, much less has been done to develop undergraduate programs. This paper addresses the design of a curriculum for a baccalaureate program in modeling and simulationengineering. The constraints and objectives that guide the curriculum design are described. Then the development of a new curriculum, designed to meet the ABET accreditation requirements for general engineering programs, is presented.

The inclusion of innovation within engineering education is being identified as a crucial effort to ensure our technological competitiveness as evident by the number of solicitations including engineering innovation education by the National Science Foundation. While most work is spent on identifying how to create environments that foster innovation, this paper focuses on developing a technical skill set that enables innovation when in the correct environment. The premise of this paper is that the skills taught within the modeling and simulation curricula are those that enable innovative thinking. The skill set focuses on the abstract thinking, communication, and evaluation skills. This paper does not propose changing current engineering curricula, but rather to augment them by introducing abstract modeling concepts early in the curriculum, allowing students to see the generation of an innovative idea. This is be done through a series of small modules and assignments spread throughout the curriculum. Furthermore, the modules benefit the existing curricula by providing a context for why the students are learning the classic material.
