Energy and QoS-aware virtual machine placement approach for IaaS cloud datacenter

Virtualization technology enables cloud providers to abstract, hide, and manage the underlying physical resources of cloud data centers in a flexible and scalable manner. It allows placing multiple independent virtual machines (VMs) on a single server in order to improve resource utilization and energy efficiency. However, determining the optimal VM placement is crucial as it directly impacts load balancing, energy consumption, and performance degradation within the data center. Furthermore, deciding on VM placement based on a single factor is usually insufficient to improve data center performance because many factors must be considered, and ignoring them may be too expensive. This paper improves a new multi-objective VM placement (MVMP) algorithm using a quantum particle swarm optimization (QPSO) technique. We call it QPSO-MOVMP, and its objective is to find the Pareto optimal solution for the VM placement problem by balancing different goals. This algorithm generates Pareto optimal solutions that save power by minimizing the number of running physical machines, avoid performance degradation by maintaining service level agreement (SLA), and improve load balancing by keeping server loads at optimal utilization. The experimental results show that QPSO-MOVMP had superior performance in terms of power consumption and performance degradation compared to three other multi-objective algorithms and three conventional single-objective algorithms. Simulation results show that the proposed QPSO-MOVMP achieves a consumption of 2.4 × 104 watts in power. Furthermore, it outperformed the others, achieving a minimum of 12% SLA breaches while experiencing a significant surge in requests from VMs. Moreover, the proposed model generated Pareto solutions that had a better distribution than those derived from a comparative method. © The Author(s) 2025.

A Package Level Regression Test Selection Approach for Java Software Systems

Regression testing of software systems is an important and critical activity but can be expensive and resource-intensive. An approach to enhance its efficiency is Regression Test Selection (RTS), which selectively re-executes a subset of relevant tests that are impacted by code modifications. Previous studies on static and dynamic RTS for Java software have shown that selecting tests at the class level is more effective than using finer granularities like methods or statements. Nevertheless, RTS at the package level, which is a coarser granularity than class level, has not been thoroughly investigated or evaluated for Java projects. To address this gap, we propose PKRTS, a static package-level RTS approach that utilizes the structural dependencies of the software system under test to construct a package-level dependency graph. PKRTS analyzes dependencies in the graph and identifies relevant tests that can reach modified packages, i.e., packages containing altered classes. In contrast to conventional static RTS techniques, PKRTS implicitly considers dynamic dependencies, such as Java reflection and virtual method calls, among classes belonging to the same package by treating all those classes as a single cohesive node in the dependency graph. We evaluated PKRTS on 885 revisions of 9 open-source Java projects, with its performance compared to Ekstazi, a state-of-the-art dynamic class-level approach, and STARTS, a state-of-the-art static class-level approach. We used Ekstazi as the baseline to measure the safety and precision violations of PKRTS and STARTS. The results indicated that PKRTS outperformed static class-level RTS in terms of safety violation, which measures the extent to which relevant test cases are missed. PKRTS showed an average safety violation of 2.29%, while STARTS recorded 5.94%. Smartphones contain a vast amount of information about their users, which can be used as evidence in criminal cases. However, the sheer volume of data can make it challenging for forensic investigators to identify and use the most relevant information. Neutrosophic logic is a generalization of fuzzy logic that allows for uncertainty and vagueness, making it a more potent tool for dealing with the ambiguity of real-world data. The proposed framework aims to identify and utilize the most relevant information for forensic investigators, making it easier to solve criminal cases using Neutrosophic logic. This novel approach provides a more powerful tool for dealing with the ambiguity of smartphone data, ultimately improving the accuracy and effectiveness of forensic investigations. Our research has utilized Neutrosophic logic to evaluate the degree of truth, falsity, or Indeterminacy of this information. Additionally, this study analyzes conversations between individuals using Excel’s fuzzy lookup add-in to determine the percentage of truth and false in each conversation. The results were compiled into a dataset and utilized a Neutrosophic Python code to evaluate the information. The results indicate the percentage of truth, false, and Indeterminacy in each conversation and which can be used to determine its admissibility as evidence and which not. © 2025, University of New Mexico. Malware detection is one of the critical tasks of cybersecurity, especially considering the growing popularity of mobile devices. The integrity and security of mobile ecosystems rely on the capacity to identify malware quickly and precisely, as security hacks against these devices become increasingly frequent. Due to the requirement for massive volumes of data aggregation, traditional centralized machine learning (ML) techniques for malware detection face challenges with data sharing, computational complexity, and privacy. This research addresses these challenges by proposing a novel model, called "CNN-Fed", which is based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) with Federated Learning (Fed). The main goal of this work is to create a global classifier for Android malware detection that is highly accurate and does not require centralised data aggregation. Using four benchmark datasets—Drebin, Malgenome, Kronodroid, and Tuandromd—the CNN-Fed model is trained across many clients in a federated setting under the suggested architecture. Then we use multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methodology to evaluate the number of clients and number of rounds. We use two MCDM methods such as Entropy methodology to compute the criteria weights and the CoCoSo methodology to rank the alternatives. We use the interval-valued neutrosophic sets (IVNSs) to deal with uncertainty and vague information. We use five criteria such as accuracy, F1-score, precision, recall, and FP and six of alternatives refer to the number of clients and number of rounds. Predicting Student Behavior Using a Neutrosophic Deep Learning Model

We developed an information system using an object-oriented programming language and a distributed database (DDB) consisting of multiple interconnected databases across a computer network, managed by a distributed database management system (DDBMS) for easy access. An intelligent system was designed to assess the difficulty level of preliminary exams and select top-performing advanced students using a Neutrosophic Deep Learning Model. The dataset was randomly split into training (80%) and testing (20%) sets, and the model, trained with the Adam optimizer at a 0.001 learning rate over 50 epochs, incorporated early stopping based on validation loss. This system, implemented at a traditional Egyptian university, achieved a 95% accuracy in predicting student dropout. Student behavior, influenced by personal, environmental, and academic factors, is often evaluated subjectively, leading to inconsistent results. Traditional machine learning approaches struggle with the inherent uncertainty in behavioral data. To address this, we combined neutrosophic theory—a mathematical framework that accounts for truth, falsity, and indeterminacy—with deep learning, which excels at learning complex data relationships, to predict student outcomes such as dropout rates. Evaluating the model on student data, including attendance and grades, showed superior accuracy, achieving a determination coefficient of 0.95, demonstrating the approach's potential for identifying at-risk students and enabling targeted interventions. © 2025, University of New Mexico. This paper explores the adoption of cloud computing and big data technologies in small and medium enterprises (SMEs), focusing on synthesizing key factors influencing adoption. By conducting a comprehensive literature review and analyzing theoretical frameworks such as the technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework, this study proposes a novel conceptual model tailored to the unique socio-economic context of SMEs in the MENA region. The methodology includes an analysis of 30 research articles, highlighting enablers and barriers to adoption. Key contributions include a taxonomy of factors and actionable insights for policymakers and practitioners. This research addresses gaps in existing studies by providing a region-specific perspective on cloud computing and big data technologies adoption for SMEs. This strong tendency towards services provided by cloud computing is very clear, and to shape their future IT, it's worth highlighting the existence of such technology. A synthesis of the literature on cloud computing adoption was presented in this paper classifying reviews based on factors that play an important role in taking the adoption decision incorporating the theoretical frameworks. Moreover, the relationship between big data and cloud computing has been explored. In addition to proposing a synthesized findings model, this paper includes various factors derived from the literature and related theoretical frameworks. In this paper we select research articles from broadly recognized research databases, as well as undertaking a comprehensive review of these selected articles focusing on the adoption of cloud computing and big data. An Automated Contrast Enhancement Approach for Aerial Images

Real-world applications benefit greatly from aerial imagery. Various modern applications utilizing aerial images;however, these images are often low-contrast due to imperfect atmospheric conditions and limitations in the imaging systems. Many methods exist to enhance the quality of aerial images, yet not all of them capable of producing desired results. Some may have high complexity, and others may require numerous inputs. On the other hand, it is observed that a low-contrast impact that is difficult to prevent throughout the data collection process degrades the quality of aerial images a lot. As a result, in this paper a novel method for improving aerial image contrast has been presented. Hence a two-phase approach for increasing contrast and remapping the intensities of an aerial image to its native dynamic range has been presented in this paper. Additionally, a regularization technique is provided using the two-step regularization and mapping procedures. For image quality assessment (IQA), two performance assessment metrics;measure of enhancement (EME) and Structural SIMilarity (SSIM) have been suggested to measure the quality of the results of the proposed algorithm. The experimental results indicate that the proposed approach increases the contrast of aerial image substantially as compared with other widely contrast enhancement methods. ©2025 The authors.

Fuzzy clustering for electric field characterization and its application to thunderstorm interpretability

Changes in the Atmospheric Electric Field Signal(AEFS) are highly correlated with weather changes, especially with thunderstorm activities. However, little attention has been paid to the ambiguous weather information implicit in AEFS changes. In this paper, a Fuzzy C-Means(FCM) clustering method is used for the first time to develop an innovative approach to characterize the weather attributes carried by AEFS. First, a time series dataset is created in the time domain using AEFS attributes. The AEFS-based weather is evaluated according to the time-series Membership Degree(MD) changes obtained by inputting this dataset into the FCM. Second, thunderstorm intensities are reflected by the change in distance from a thunderstorm cloud point charge to an AEF apparatus. Thus, a matching relationship is established between the normalized distance and the thunderstorm dominant MD in the space domain. Finally, the rationality and reliability of the proposed method are verified by combining radar charts and expert experience. The results confirm that this method accurately characterizes the weather attributes and changes in the AEFS, and a negative distance-MD correlation is obtained for the first time. The detection of thunderstorm activity by AEF from the perspective of fuzzy set technology provides a meaningful guidance for interpretable thunderstorms.

The utilization of Data-Driven Machine Learning (DDML) models in the healthcare sector poses unique challenges due to the crucial nature of clinical decision-making and its impact on patient outcomes. A primary concern in this domain is the data quality that forms the basis for these models, which is essential for their effectiveness. While numerous studies are dedicated to leveraging Machine Learning (ML) to enhance patient care, a substantial gap exists in understanding and evaluating the quality of training data before training ML models. This issue is exacerbated by the lack of well-defined standards to ensure that data characteristics align with the specific goals of ML in healthcare. To address this, our study introduces a conceptual three-dimensional framework focusing on data accuracy, completeness, and consistency aimed at assessing and improving the quality of training data. This framework is designed to enhance the performance, predictability, and interpretability of healthcare-specific ML models and reduce biases, thus bridging current research gaps and laying the groundwork for future developments in ML-driven healthcare systems. This paper presents the initial step for our proposed Data Quality Framework (DQF), which addresses the three dimensions mentioned above. Adaptive Cooperative Quality Weight Spectrum Sensing for Mitigating Byzantine Attacks in Cognitive Radio

Spectrum sensing data falsification (SSDF) attack, i.e., Byzantine attack, is one of the critical threats of the cooperative spectrum sensing where the Byzantine attackers (BAs) forward incorrect local sensing results to mislead the fusion center on channel availability decisions. By using traditional voting rule, the cooperative spectrum sensing performance deteriorates significantly due to incorrect local sensing results. Then, reliability weight strategy becomes the popular solution to avoid incorrect sensing results from BAs and unreliable cognitive radio users (CRUs). However, it is very difficult to detect the attackers since they also occasionally provide correct sensing results to the fusion center for concealing the attack objective. Based on existing techniques, the BAs and CRUs may be assigned with low reliability weights or distinguished from the data fusion account. In this paper, we propose the adaptive cooperative quality weight algorithm for mitigating the Byzantine attack issue by distinguishing the BAs and CRUs from the data fusion account while selecting only useful CRUs since the number of members in the account is also the important factor for cooperative spectrum sensing. In our proposed algorithm, we adopt a stable preference ordering towards ideal solution (SPOTIS) for determining the reliability of SUs which shows low computational complexity as compared to other reliability weight-based techniques. To achieve high sensing performance, our global decision threshold is adapted according to the reliability of reliable users.
