We report luminescence from intra-configurational f-f transitions of Tb3+ in GaN powders and thin films deposited on sapphire substrates using metal organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) and pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The MOVPE film was grown using the precursor tris(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3, 5-heptanedionato)terbium, while the PLD films were prepared from powder samples of GaN:Tb3+ prepared by a solution approach. All films yielded transitions of Tb3+ originating from the 5D4 state of Tb3+ to the 7F5 level as well as near bandgap emission (NBE) under cathodoluminescence (CL) excitation. The same transitions were also observed in the source powder of the PLD films, with the exceptions of the NBE at 370 nm. This indicates that the films contain lower defect level than the powders, which improves the quality of the material.

We compare magnetic reversal of nanostructured circular magnetic dots of different sizes. This comparison is based on superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry, neutron scattering, Monte Carlo simulation, and analytical calculations and is quantified using a parameter which characterizes the variation in the hysteresis curve width. Below a critical dot diameter, the magnetic reversal occurs by coherent rotation and above that diameter, the reversal occurs by formation of a magnetic vortex. The vortex-core diameter is controlled by competing magnetic energy contributions. For 20-nm-thick Fe dots, the values of the critical diameter (58–60 nm) and the vortex core (16–19 nm) are in very good agreement between the different experimental and theoretical methods: neutron scattering, SQUID magnetometry, Monte Carlo simulations, and analytical calculations.

The setting rates of inks on paper influence the printing operation and the quality of the final product. While much work has been reported on the effect of the coating structure on setting rates, much less work has been done understanding the ink parameters, especially the influence of emulsification. A series of four papers were tested with three inks. The inks were characterized in terms of rheology and their filtration behavior. The filtration rate is used to obtain a permeability value of the ink filtercake. The final print ink density and gloss when printed on paper are reported as well as tack dynamics. The value of the maximum tack was found to depend upon the smoothness of the paper tested and not as much as on the type of ink. The dynamics and magnitude of the tack test depended on the ink viscosity, but viscosity alone does not explain the results. The measured ink filtercake permeabilities are different between the ink types by a factor of two. The setting rate is found to mostly be a function of the viscosity of the oil used in the ink, and not as much a function of the pigment and resin system.
