The Unit framework uses a dataflow programming language to describe interaction techniques for highly interactive environments, such as augmented, mixed, and virtual reality. Unit places interaction techniques in an abstraction layer between the input devices and the application, which allows the application developer to separate application functionality from interaction techniques and behavior. Unit's modular approach leads to the design of reusable application-independent interaction control components, portions of which can be distributed across different machines. Unit makes it possible at run time to experiment with interaction technique behavior, as well as to switch among different input device configurations. We provide both a visual interface and a programming API for the specification of the dataflow. To demonstrate how Unit works and to show the benefits to the interaction design process, we describe a few interaction techniques implemented using Unit. We also show how Unit's distribution mechanism can offload CPU intensive operations, as well as avoid costly special-purpose hardware in experimental setups.

A probabilistic artificial neural network is presented. It is of a one-layer, feedback-coupled type with graded units. The learning rule is derived from Bayes's rule. Learning is regarded as collecting statistics and recall as a statistical inference process. Units correspond to events and connections come out as compatibility coefficients in a logarithmic combination rule. The input to a unit via connections from other active units affects the a posteriori belief in the event in question. The new model is compared to an earlier binary model with respect to storage capacity, noise tolerance, etc. in a content addressable memory (CAM) task. The new model is a real time network and some results on the reaction time for associative recall are given. The scaling of learning and relaxation operations is considered together with issues related to representation of information in one-layer artificial neural networks. An extension with complex units is discussed.

We describe several approaches for using prosodic features of speech and audio localization to control interactive applications. This information can be applied to parameter control, as well as to speech disambiguation. We discuss how characteristics of spoken sentences can be exploited in the user interface;for example, by considering the speed with which a sentence is spoken and the presence of extraneous utterances. We also show how coarse audio localization can be used for low-fidelity gesture tracking, by inferring the speaker's head position.

We investigate numerically a mathematical model of a consolidation process of a dense, flocculated suspension. The suspension is treated as a two-constituent mixture of a fluid and solid particles by an Eulerian two-phase fluid model. We characterize the suspension by constitutive relations concerning the stresses, interaction forces and inter-particle forces. A numerical solver for a two dimensional test case is developed using finite difference methods both in time and space. In the numerical experiments, the suspension is confined to a closed box and consolidates due to a constant gravity field directed toward the bottom. To study the effect of shear, 2D simulations are performed where the bottom wall of the box is moving with a constant speed.

Die Lösungen des Coulombschen Reibungsproblems für starre Körper in zwei Dimensionen werden analysiert. Das bestimmende System von gewöhnlichen Differentialgleichungen und Ungleichungen wird aufgestellt. Beispiele werden vorgelegt, die einige ungewünschte Eigenschaften dieses speziellen Reibungsgesetzes nachweisen. Hinreichende Bedingungen für Existenz und Eindeutigkeit werden mit Hilfe der Theorie der linearen Komplementarität hergeleitet. The solutions to the Coulomb friction problem for rigid bodies in two dimensions are analyzed. The governing system of ordinary differential equations and inequalities is derived. Examples are presented demonstrating undesirable properties of this particular law of friction. Sufficient conditions for existence and uniqueness are given using the theory of linear complementarity.
