Applying graph clustering algorithms in real world networks needs to overcome two main challenges: the lack of prior knowledge and the scalability issue. This paper proposes a novel method based on the topological features of complex networks to optimize the clustering algorithms in real-world networks. More specifically, the features are used for parameter estimation and performance optimization. The proposed method is evaluated on real-world networks extracted from the web. Experimental results show improvement both in terms of Adjusted Rand index values as well as runtime efficiency. © 2011 Authors.

In this paper, we present a novel approach for developing services that can be deployed in different cloud infrastructures at the same time. The approach provides an instrument with emphasis on abstraction, inheritance and code reuse. Then, cloud-based services are developed easily by extending existing abstractions classes provided by the instrument or other developers. The interoperability between different clouds is solved by the basic abstraction classes of the instrument and all services are inherited and benefited from the advantage.

Grid is the largest advance of network after Internet since the Grid System provides a specialty that can be used popularly and effectively. However, it is a challenge to the consistency and community of use on the data storages space of a Grid System. Therefore, the problem of application for the Computational Grid and Data Grid is more important. It can set up a usability, expandability, high operation capability, and large memory space in Grid with the Cluster system and parallel technique in order to solve the problem. In this paper, we provided a Grid with high operation capability and higher memories to solve the problem. As to the Grid setting, we take use of the Cluster computing to increase the operation effect for computing, and a PVFS2 with more storages effect for data. It can supply a quite correct platform for Grid user whether for large data access or huge operation.

Learning free-surface flow with physics-informed neural networks

The interface between data-driven learning methods and classical simulation poses an interesting field offering a multitude of new applications. In this work, we build on the notion of physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) and employ them in the area of shallow-water equation (SWE) models. These models play an important role in modeling and simulating free-surface flow scenarios such as in flood-wave propagation or tsunami waves. Different formulations of the PINN residual are compared to each other and multiple optimizations are being evaluated to speed up the convergence rate. We test these with different 1-D and 2-D experiments and finally demonstrate that regarding a SWE scenario with varying bathymetry, the method is able to produce competitive results in comparison to the direct numerical simulation with a total relative L2 error of 8.9e−3. Object-relational database management systems (OR-DBMS) extend the capabilities of the relational databases by allowing definition of new data types and methods to operate on these data types while retaining most of the relational model semantics. In this paper we examine issues related to parallel processing of queries in the object-relational model with respect to efficient storage and retrieval of large objects. We extend the concept of collective I/O and other related techniques such as request merging and data sieving in the database domain to achieve high performance in the retrieval of large objects. We deal with the I/O optimization problem in the query executor, access methods and the low level runtime system. We also propose a new technique called pooled striping for efficient storage of large objects on multiple disks. The results presented in this paper clearly show the effectiveness of the proposed I/O optimization techniques in handling large amounts of data in a parallel object-relational database system.

Routine operations of emergency first responders are usually well managed. The situation is different for mass casualty emergencies where more people and properties are threatened. In such situations there are no predefined plans in place and mitigation is solved mostly through crisis management. Teams managing such acute accidents are often working in information insufficiency. Timely information exchange between involved agencies, common understanding of data and fast provision of knowledge can save lives and protect properties. Useful information is heterogeneous and is distributed across many organizations in disparate information sources in many formats with different access policies and in varying quality. The information sources range from sensors deployed on incidence sites, publicly available data sources, corporate legacy systems, documents stored on remote locations to human end-users providing information using mobile devices. This article addresses operational challenges of First Responders and complementary challenges in accessing and analyzing information from multiple sources to provide advanced capabilities for command and control in emergency response. Herein we propose to use an agent-based infrastructure for supporting such interoperability. We propose to build the framework amplifying an agent infrastructure developed in scope of the SECRICOM EU integrated project. In this article we focus mainly on the conceptual architecture of such integration framework.

In this paper we present design and development of the semantic grid services for the flood forecasting simulations. We will highlight the corresponding architecture and the process of service annotation, discovery and composition in the project K-WfGrid [12]. We will describe in detail the challenges of the flood-forecasting application and corresponding design and development of the service oriented model, which is based on the well known Web Service Resource Framework (WSRF). Semantic descriptions of the WSRF services will be presented as well as the architecture, which exploits semantics in discovery and composition of services. Further, we will demonstrate how experience management solutions can help in the process of discovery and composition. The system provides a unique approach in Semantic Grids by combining the advances of semantic web services and grid architectures.

Cloud computing has seen a tremendous growth in the last five years. Along with the growth, many cloud models have been marketed. They deliver hardware and software as virtualization enabled services to users. Although cloud computing offers considerable advantages such as unlimited resources, manageability and lower investment costs but there are still barriers to exploit it. One of the barriers is the difficulties, which users are being faced when developing and deploying their own services into clouds. In this paper, we present a novel approach for developing interoperable services that can be deployed in different cloud infrastructures at the same time. The approach provides an instrument with emphasis on abstraction, inheritance and code reuse. Using the approach, cloud-based services are developed easily by extending existing abstractions classes provided by the instrument or other developers. The interoperability between different clouds is solved via the basic abstraction class of the instrument and all services are inherited and benefited from this advantage.

This article proposes a distributed architecture designed for management of crisis situations were multiple actors are involved from various organizations with different competences and communicating over IP-based networks including wireless devices. In such settings requirements exist for secure communication and trusted collection of data from various sources. The role of agents in the proposed architecture is primarily coordinated collection of information. In respect to requirements the overall agent infrastructure must be a secure, robust and fail resistant system. Required level of trust for agents is based on a special hardware module which provides trusted computing functionality. In the article we describe such architecture in terms of detailed requirements, design and decomposition to subsystems. We also provide a sample scenario use case inspired by concrete crisis situation. The architecture herein described is being used in scope of an EU integrated project called Secricom therefore we briefly describe the integration points with other systems involved in the project. We conclude with current state of the architecture implementation and with further plans concerning the development of the described architecture.

In addition to the traditional massively parallel computers, distributed workstation clusters now play an important role in scientific computing, due to the advent of commodity high performance processors, low-latency/high-bandwidth networks and powerful development tools. In a cluster environment, we add more and more workstations for reaching more computing performance. Unfortunately, in general case, we don't have enough space for setting up many PCs to form a large-scale PC cluster, and more questions we are concerned about, for example, network topology, electric power, and management question etc. Thus, we can use several places for setting up a number of machines on each place, and enabling networking for transparent computing on each cluster node for enable an enormous node cluster. In this paper, we use some routing policy and a kernel module named Netfilter to enable three or more clusters to be connected as a big one. In our experimental environment we use three different quantities of nodes in each PC cluster connected via a Fast-Ethernet network environment. As experiment, we performed matrix multiplication for performance analysis.
