A theoretical analysis based on the method of system-size expansion of the master equation is carried out for a generalized nonlinear stochastic model with cubic interactions. The resulting Fokker-Planck equation enables us to derive the relevant probability distributions in the critical region as well as away from it; in the former case, the distribution turns out to be non-Gaussian and is dominated by fluctuations which are non-negligible. The onset of a first-order phase transition in the system is investigated in some detail. In particular, a Maxwell-type "theorem of equal areas" is discovered which might hold for a much wider class of systems with cubic interactions.
The detection of Auger electrons under MeV ion bombardment has been investigated as a surface analytical probe of particular utility for low- and middle-Z elements. Using UHV chambers at Bell Laboratories and Chalk Ri...

The use of N ( E ) = N FE k (∂ E ( k )/∂ k ) −1 as the electronic density of states for disordered metallic systems is critically examined. The present examination shows that its use is reasonable and that the applicability of the nearly-free-electron theory to the binary alloys of simple metals becomes worse and worse in going from the case of small charge transfer to the case of large charge transfer.

It is demonstrated that the perturbative correction, appearing in the structure factor of the simple liquid metals in the one-component-plasma model, is important and may have to be calculated more rigorously than by the usual semi-non-local or local pseudopotential theory.

The relativistic theory of shakeoff of innershell electrons during β‐decay is reexamined. In the case of negative β‐decay a resolution of the discrepancy that existed between theory and experimental data has been achieved. This resolution comes about by considering the many‐body aspects of the problem, and the wave functions involved in the initial and final states have to be evaluated more precisely. In the case of electron capture shakeoff the agreement still leaves room for probing electron correlation. The glaring fault seems to be in the case of positron decay shakeoff, where the theoretical values are about half of the measured ones. A plausible argument is given to resolve this discrepancy by considering the positron‐ejected electron final state interaction.

The theory of shakeoff of inner-shell electrons in β decay is reexamined. A resolution of the discrepancy that exists between theory and experimental data is provided in the β− decay cases. This comes about by considering the many-body aspects of the problem, and evaluating the wave functions involved in the initial and final states more exactly. The results indicate that agreement between the K-electron ejection probabilities PK and recent experimental results produced by different techniques is generally restored.
K-electron shakeoff probabilities during K capture have been calculated using Dirac-Fock-Slater wave functions, and by direct calculation of the ejected-electron continuum wave functions. The results indicate an overa...
K-electron shakeoff probabilities during K capture have been calculated using Dirac-Fock-Slater wave functions, and by direct calculation of the ejected-electron continuum wave functions. The results indicate an overall better agreement with experimental results, but leave room for some residual electron-electron correlation effects.
New, high resolution, differential collision cross section data for the scattering of He by Ar atoms, obtained in Gottingen, are found to be inconsistent with the predictions derived from a recently proposed He-Ar pot...
