Subcycle Dynamics of Coulomb Asymmetry in Strong Elliptical Laser Fields

We measure photoelectron angular distributions of noble gases in intense elliptically polarized laser fields, which indicate strong structure-dependent Coulomb asymmetry. Using a dedicated semiclassical model, we have disentangled the contribution of direct ionization and multiple forward scattering on Coulomb asymmetry in elliptical laser fields. Our theory quantifies the roles of the ionic potential and initial transverse momentum on Coulomb asymmetry, proving that the small lobes of asymmetry are induced by direct ionization and the strong asymmetry is induced by multiple forward scattering in the ionic potential. Both processes are distorted by the Coulomb force acting on the electrons after tunneling. Lowering the ionization potential, the relative contribution of direct ionization on Coulomb asymmetry substantially decreases and Coulomb focusing on multiple rescattering is more important. We do not observe evident initial longitudinal momentum spread at the tunnel exit according to our simulation.

We estimate unknown rotation matrices R_i from a set of measurements of relative rotations R_iR_j~T. Measurements are strongly affected by noise such that a small fraction of them are well concentrated around the true relative rotations while the majority of measurements are outliers bearing little or no information. We propose a maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) that explicitly acknowledges this noise model, yielding a robust estimation algorithm. The MLE is computed via Riemannian trust-region optimization using the Manopt toolbox. Comparisons of the MLE with Cramer-Rao bounds suggest the estimator is asymptotically efficient.

S-matrix and semiclassical study of electron-electron correlation in strong-field nonsequential double ionization of Ne

The correlated electron momentum distribution for nonsequential double ionization (NSDI) of Ne in a strong linearly polarized laser field is studied by quantum S-matrix and semiclassical theories. At low intensity, where the single-return-collision NSDI process dominates, a good agreement between two theories is found. However, at high intensity, two theories are inconsistent with each other, and the semiclassical calculation is qualitatively in agreement with the experimental observation. Our analysis shows that this can be attributed to the neglect of the ion potential in the present S-matrix theory, and hence the multiple-return-collision NSDI process, which becomes important at high intensity, is underestimated in the current S-matrix theory.

We study the optical bistability for a Bose-Einstein condensate of atoms in a driven optical cavity with a Kerr medium. We find that both the threshold point of optical bistability transition and the width of optical bistability hysteresis can be controlled by appropriately adjusting the Kerr interaction between the photons. In particular, we show that the optical bistability will disappear when the Kerr interaction exceeds a critical value.

Asymptotic behaviors of solutions for dissipative quantum Zakharov equations

The dissipative quantum Zakharov equations are mainly studied. The ex- istence and uniqueness of the solutions for the dissipative quantum Zakharov equations are proved by the standard Galerkin approximation method on the basis of a priori esti- mate. Meanwhile, the asymptotic behavior of solutions and the global attractor which is constructed in the energy space equipped with the weak topology are also investigated.

The nonlinear behavior of higher dimensional black hole spacetimes is of interest in several contexts, ranging from an understanding of cosmic censorship to black hole production in high-energy collisions. However, nonlinear numerical evolutions of higher dimensional black hole spacetimes are tremendously complex, involving different diagnostic tools and “dimensional reduction methods.” In this work we compare two different successful codes to evolve Einstein’s equations in higher dimensions, and show that the results of such different procedures agree to numerical precision, when applied to the collision from rest of two equal-mass black holes. We calculate the total radiated energy to be Erad/M=(9.0±0.5)×10−4 in five dimensions and Erad/M=(8.1±0.4)×10−4 in six dimensions.

Efficient linear programming algorithm to generate the densest lattice sphere packings

Finding the densest sphere packing in d-dimensional Euclidean space Rd is an outstanding fundamental problem with relevance in many fields, including the ground states of molecular systems, colloidal crystal structures, coding theory, discrete geometry, number theory, and biological systems. Numerically generating the densest sphere packings becomes very challenging in high dimensions due to an exponentially increasing number of possible sphere contacts and sphere configurations, even for the restricted problem of finding the densest lattice sphere packings. In this paper we apply the Torquato-Jiao packing algorithm, which is a method based on solving a sequence of linear programs, to robustly reproduce the densest known lattice sphere packings for dimensions 2 through 19. We show that the TJ algorithm is appreciably more efficient at solving these problems than previously published methods. Indeed, in some dimensions, the former procedure can be as much as three orders of magnitude faster at finding the optimal solutions than earlier ones. We also study the suboptimal local density-maxima solutions (inherent structures or “extreme” lattices) to gain insight about the nature of the topography of the “density” landscape.

A fully discrete finite difference scheme for dissipative Zakharov equations is analyzed. On the basis of a series of the time-uniform priori estimates of the difference solutions, the stability of the difference scheme and the error bounds of optimal order of the difference solutions are obtained in L^2 × H^1 × H^2 over a finite time interval （0, T]. Finally, the existence of a global attractor is proved for a discrete dynamical system associated with the fully discrete finite difference scheme.
