We analyze numerically the mechanisms controlling the spacing of chimneys—channels devoid of solid—in two-dimensional mushy layers formed by solidifying a binary alloy. Chimneys are the principal conduits through which buoyancy effects material transport out of the mushy layer and into the liquid from which it formed. Experiments show a coarsening of chimney spacing; we pursue the hypothesis that the spacing adjusts to optimize material transport and hence maximize the rate of removal of potential energy stored in the mushy layer. The optimal solute flux increases approximately linearly with the mush Rayleigh number. However, for spacings below a critical value, the chimneys collapse and solute fluxes cease, revealing a hysteresis between chimney convection and no flow. The results are consistent with a variational principle controlling the dynamics of this dissipative system.

The effects of Coulomb interaction screening on electron–hydrogen-atom elastic and excitation scattering around the n=2 threshold have been investigated by using the R-matrix method with pseudostates. The elastic and excitation collision strengths show dramatic changes when the interaction screening length D varies from ∞ to 3.8 a.u., as a result of the convergence of 1,3S Feshbach resonances to the varying 2s threshold and of the transformation of 1,3P and 1D Feshbach resonances into shape-type resonances when they pass across the 2s and 2p threshold at certain critical value of D, respectively [S. B. Zhang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 023203 (2010)]. The resonance parameters for a large number of D in the range D=∞–3.8 a.u. are presented. It is observed that the 1,3P and 1D resonance contributions to the elastic and excitation collision strengths decrease rapidly with decreasing D after the resonance passes the critical D value. The contribution of a 1Se Feshbach resonance to the elastic or excitation collision strength changes into a cusp after the resonance merges into its parent 2s state and immerses into the background with the further decrease of D.

We demonstrate that the electronic density distribution of a Rydberg state can be probed directly using a broadband harmonic spectrum in a few-cycle laser pulse. Taking advantage of the large orbital radius of a Rydberg state, we show that the Rydberg electron can be accelerated directly toward the core under the influence of a few-cycle laser pulse, leading to recombination and emission of harmonic photons. In this case the initial position of the electron and the harmonic order form a one-to-one correspondence, resulting in a realization of direct probing of the density distribution of the initial Rydberg state.

We have performed a systematic first-principles investigation to calculate the electronic structures, mechanical properties, and phonon-dispersion curves of NpO2. The local-density approximation+U and the generalized gradient approximation+U formalisms have been used to account for the strong on-site Coulomb repulsion among the localized Np 5f electrons. By choosing the Hubbard U parameter around 4 eV, the orbital occupancy characters of Np 5f and O 2p are in good agreement with recent experiments [A. Seibert, T. Gouder, and F. Huber, J. Nucl. Mater. 389, 470 (2009)]. Comparing to our previous study of ThO2, we note that stronger covalency exists in NpO2 due to the more localization behavior of 5f electrons of Np in line with the localization-delocalization trend exhibited by the actinides series.

We theoretically investigate the high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in helium using a two-color laser field synthesized by an intense 25-fs laser pulse at 800 nm and a relatively weak ~43−fs laser pulse at 1400 nm. When the polarization between the two pulses is arranged at an angle of ~73°, supercontinuum spectra are dramatically broadened to 180 eV, which is sufficient to support an isolated ∼73-as pulse without any phase compensation. The physical mechanisms behind the phenomenon are well explained in terms of quantum and classical analyses. Furthermore, in the long-pulse regime, this method of extending the supercontinuum spectrum shows the significant advantage over previous two-color HHG schemes.

This paper theoretically investigates the orbital magnetization of electron-doped (n-type) semiconductor het-erostructures and of hole-doped (p-type) bulk semiconductors, which are respectively described by a two-dimensional electron/hole Hamiltonian with both the included Rashba spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting terms. It is the Zeeman splitting, rather than the Rashba spin-orbit coupling, that destroys the time-reversal symmetry of the semiconductor systems and results in nontrivial orbital magnetization. The results show that the magnitude of the orbital magnetization per hole and the Hall conductance in the p-type bulk semiconductors are about 10^-2-10^-1 effective Bohr magneton and 10^-1-1 e^2/h, respectively. However, the orbital magnetization per electron and the Hall conductance in the n-type semiconductor heterostructures are too small to be easily observed in experiment.

Semiclassical limit to the solution of transient bipolar quantum drift-diffusion model in semiconductor simulation is discussed. It is proved that the semiclassical limit of this solution satisfies the classical bipolar drift-diffusion model. In addition, the authors also prove the existence of weak solution.

This paper is devoted to considering the three-dimensional viscous primitive equations of the large-scale atmosphere. First, we prove the global well-posedness for the primitive equations with weaker initial data than that in [11]. Second, we obtain the existence of smooth solutions to the equations. Moreover, we obtain the compact global attractor in V for the dynamical system generated by the primitive equations of large-scale atmosphere, which improves the result of [11].

In this work, we study the one-dimensional stabilized Kuramoto Sivashinsky equation with additive uncorrelated stochastic noise. The Eckhaus stable band of the deterministic equation collapses to a narrow region near the center of the band. This is consistent with the behavior of the phase diffusion constants of these states. Some connections to the phenomenon of state selection in driven out of equilibrium systems are made.
