Effect of low temperature and period of storage on the quality of Garlic Seeds (Allium sativum L)

The aim the study was to analyze the effect of temperature storage of garlic seeds including weight loss, sprouting and damage during the storage period. The samples of Garlic seeds are local varieties, cv. Lumbu Hijau and cv. Lumbu Kuning were collected from the farmers in Temanggung Regency. The experiments were set at two different temperature conditions, i.e. 5°C and room temperature (29-31°C) as a control. The relative humidity (RH) of storage conditions was 50-70% for cold storage and 70-80% for storage in room temperature. The amout of sampel used was about 47-68 tubers (500 g) for cv. Lumbu Hijau and around 24-32 tubers (500 gr) for cv. Lumbu Kuning, were placed in cold storage at different temperatures and in dark. The period of storage was design for 5 months. All experiments were carried out in three replications. The results showed that the decrease in weight loss for garlic stored at storage temperatures of 5°C and room temperature were 10.48 and 7.46 % for cv. Lumbu Hijau and 15.03 and 11.38 % cv. Lumbu Kuning, respectively. The higest sprouting percentage was found for those seeds garlic cv. Lumbu Kuning at 5°C, i. e, 22.22 %. The highest percentage of damage after 5 months of storage was found in the seeds of garlic cv. Lumbu Hijau stored at room temperature were 2.30 % and cv. Lumbu Kuning at 5°C were 19.04 %.

The technological improvement of marginal land was conducted through examination on three treatments; land soaking and washing (A), land remediation (B) and land reclamation (C). The highest average closure rate of klekap (66.667±5.774 %) was gained from B, and the highest average closure rate of Chaetomorpha sp (88.667±8.083 %) was derived from A. The Apocyclopas discovery through the study can become preliminary information to reveal the existence of Phronima Suppa, the indicator of tiger shrimp farming success. The land remediation (B), followed with contaminants detoxification employing plankton, is more effective in eliminating pesticide residue, depressing bacteria population and creating quality water and pond bottom soil according to the organic tiger shrimp production standard.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a flavivirus linked to multiple birth defects including microcephaly, known as congenital ZIKV syndrome. The identification of host factors involved in ZIKV replication may guide efficacious therapeutic interventions. In genome-wide transcriptional studies, we found that ZIKV infection triggers aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) activation. Specifically, ZIKV infection induces kynurenine (Kyn) production, which activates AHR, limiting the production of type I interferons (IFN-I) involved in antiviral immunity. Moreover, ZIKV-triggered AHR activation suppresses intrinsic immunity driven by the promyelocytic leukemia (PML) protein, which limits ZIKV replication. AHR inhibition suppressed the replication of multiple ZIKV strains in vitro and also suppressed replication of the related flavivirus dengue. Finally, AHR inhibition with a nanoparticle-delivered AHR antagonist or an inhibitor developed for human use limited ZIKV replication and ameliorated newborn microcephaly in a murine model. In summary, we identified AHR as a host factor for ZIKV replication and PML protein as a driver of anti-ZIKV intrinsic immunity.

We present kinematics of 6 local extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs) with low metallicities (0.016 − 0.098 Z☉) and low stellar masses (104.7 − 107.6M☉). Taking deep medium-high resolution (R ∼ 7500) integral-field spectra with 8.2-m Subaru, we resolve the small inner velocity gradients and dispersions of the EMPGs with Hα emission. Carefully masking out sub-structures originated by inflow and/or outflow, we fit 3-dimensional disk models to the observed Hα flux, velocity, and velocity-dispersion maps. All the EMPGs show rotational velocities (vrot) of 5-23 km s−1 smaller than the velocity dispersions (σ0) of 17-31 km s−1, indicating dispersion-dominated (vrot/σ0 = 0.29−0.80 gas 0.9 − 1.0. Comparing our results with other Hα kinematics studies, we find that vrot/σ0 decreases and fgas increases with decreasing metallicity, decreasing stellar mass, and increasing specific star-formation rate. We also find that simulated high-z (z ∼ 7) forming galaxies have gas fractions and dynamics similar to the observed EMPGs. Our EMPG observations and the simulations suggest that primordial galaxies are gas-rich dispersion-dominated systems, which would be identified by the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observations at z ∼ 7. The aim was to analyze the bioactive potential of hexane and ethanolic extracts from leaves of Annona hypoglauca, Roraima, Brazil, against fungi (Aspergillus flavus and Fusarium proliferatum) and yeast (Candida albicans) and gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus sanguinis) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium), antioxidant, antiacetylcholinesterase and cytotoxic activities against Artemia salina, in addition to verify a phytochemical screening. Antioxidant activity of the leaves ethanolic extract 51% to 50 µg mL-1, 16% at the same concentration for the hexane extract. The antiacetylcholinesterase activity presented high variation of the ethanolic extract and 59.76% in the hexane extract. The cytotoxic activity against A. salina was more efficient for the ethanolic extract of the leaves in 27% to 500 µg mL-1. The bioactivity of fungi and yeasts, the ethanolic extract of the leaves of A. hypoglauca showed no inhibition on the fungi F. proliferatum and A. flavus, but the hexane extract inhibited 40.0% and 59.5% on these fungi, respectively. For the inhibition of C. albicans, the extracts hexane (94.5-96.9%) and ethanolic (89.2-92.6%) of the leaves of A. hypoglauca, at all concentrations. Excellent inhibitions on gram-positive bacteria were given by the hexane extract in 100% to 500 µg mL-1, but low inhibition for the ethanolic extract for S. aureus in 21.6% to 125 µg mL-1 and for S. Sanguinis 35.5% to 500 µg mL-1. Inhibitions on gram-negative bacteria varied from 26.1% to 42.4% in ethanolic extract and 10.7% to 18.6% in hexanic extract for E. coli;as inhibition of S. typhimurium occurred from 9.3% to 61.1% in ethanolic extract and from 9.1% to 41.2% in hexane extract. Regarding phytochemical screening, the class of compounds observed qualitatively suggests the presence of saponins, flavonoids, triterpenoids and tannins. Copyright © 2018, AIDIC Servizi S.r.l.

Background: The three-item Sexual Distress Scale (SDS-3) has been frequently used to assess distress related to sexuality in public health surveys and research on sexual wellbeing. However, its psychometric properties and measurement invariance across cultural, gender and sexual subgroups have not yet been examined. This multinational study aimed to validate the SDS-3 and test its psychometric properties, including measurement invariance across language, country, gender identity, and sexual orientation groups. Methods: We used global survey data from 82,243 individuals (Mean _age=32.39 years;40.3 % men, 57.0 % women, 2.8 % non-binary, and 0.6 % other genders) participating in the International Sexual Survey (ISS;https://***/) across 42 countries and 26 languages. Participants completed the SDS-3, as well as questions regarding sociodemographic characteristics, including gender identity and sexual orientation. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) supported a unidimensional factor structure for the SDS-3, and multi-group CFA (MGCFA) suggested that this factor structure was invariant across countries, languages, gender identities, and sexual orientations. Cronbach's α for the unidimensional score was 0.83 (range between 0.76 and 0.89), and McDonald's ω was 0.84 (range between 0.76 and 0.90). Participants who did not experience sexual problems had significantly lower SDS-3 total scores (M = 2.99;SD=2.54) compared to those who reported sexual problems (M = 5.60;SD=3.00), with a large effect size (Cohen's d = 1.01 [95 % CI=-1.03, -0.98];p < 0.001). Conclusion: The SDS-3 has a unidimensional factor structure and appears to be valid and reliable for measuring sexual distress among individuals from different countries, gender identities, and sexual orientations. © 2024 The Author(s)

In the past decade, several studies have shown that Neurofeedback (NFB) by functional magnetic resonance imaging can alter the functional coupling of targeted and non-targeted areas. However, the causal mechanisms underlying these changes remain uncertain. Here, we applied a whole-brain dynamical model to estimate Effective Connectivity (EC) profiles of resting-state data acquired before and immediately after a single-session NFB training for 17 participants who underwent motor imagery NFB training and 16 healthy controls who received sham feedback. Within-group and between-group classification analyses revealed that only for the NFB group it was possible to accurately discriminate between the 2 resting-state sessions. NFB training-related signatures were reflected in a support network of direct connections between areas involved in reward processing and implicit learning, together with regions belonging to the somatomotor, control, attention, and default mode networks, identified through a recursive-feature elimination procedure. By applying a data-driven approach to explore NFB-induced changes in spatiotemporal dynamics, we demonstrated that these regions also showed decreased switching between different brain states (i.e. metastability) only following real NFB training. Overall, our findings contribute to the understanding of NFB impact on the whole brain's structure and function by shedding light on the direct connections between brain areas affected by NFB training.
