The nonlinear effects of partial erasure and transition shift, however, often limit the performance attained by the partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) detector because of model mismatch. Conventionally, the nonlinear effects are either ignored or approximated by linearization technique. In the article, a PRML detector for the PR4 model including the nonlinear effects has been developed to improve the detector performance. The new representation is more accurate and the corresponding PRML detector has better performance without increasing the realization complexity. Computer simulation results show that the new representation outperforms the conventional ones due to the enhanced modeling capability. The method is also expected to be applied in the high order partial response channel.

In this paper, a novel microelectrical impedance spectroscopy (μEIS) with three-dimensional interdigitated electrodes (3D-IDE) is developed to differentiate normal and cancerous cells. The device utilizes a microfluidic tunnel structure, which forces cells to be squeezed. Thus, the enlarged contact area between cells and electrodes allows the device to measure the intrinsic electrical signal of the cells with a higher sensitivity than a noncontact case. The cell squeezing is realized by fabricating smaller microfluidic channel than cell size. The electrical impedances are measured through 3D-IDE. The device well distinguishes normal human breast cell (MCF-10A) and early-stage human breast cancer cell (MCF-7) with a phase difference of 1.42° at 500 kHz. The proposed device also features a high repeatability because the phase change is as small as 0.27° (which is sufficiently smaller than the phase difference between normal and cancer cell) before and after the each cell assay.

Although trust has received much intention in the virtual communities (VCs) literature, few studies have been conducted to examine how trust develops in VCs. Drawing from prior literature on trust and knowledge sharing, a research model for understanding the antecedents of trust and the role of trust in VCs is presented. Data was collected from 324 members of a technical virtual community to test the model. The results help in identifying how the factors fall into three trust-building mechanisms build trust in the context VCs. The study discusses the theoretical and managerial implications of this study and proposes several future research directions.

To improve the responsiveness of engine speed control to disturbances, robust controls were investigated by simulation. The intake air control system of a gasoline engine is a typical nonlinear system, and the disturbances and parameter perturbations are generally regarded as being the unstable factors with regard to engine control. In this paper, a Mean-Value Engine Model (MVEM) with disturbances and parameter perturbations is investigated using Sliding Mode Control (SMC), which is a form of variable structure control, with a view to address instability in the idle speed control process. The simulation results confirmed that, compared with a conventional PI (Proportional-Integral) controller, the stability of the idle speed for an engine that is being subjected to disturbances, parameter variations and background noise is greatly improved by the application of SMC.

In Internet, IP multicast has been used successfully to provide an efficient, best-effort delivery service for group communication applications. However, applications such as multiparty private conference, distribution of stock market information, pay per view and other subscriber services require secure multicast to protect integrity and confidentiality of the group traffic, and validate group member's authenticity. Providing secure multicast for group communication is problematic without a robust group key management. In this paper, we propose an anonymous group key management with ID-based Signature and secret sharing technologies to distribute a new group key securely to each participant of a group with only one rekey message whenever the group membership changes. The key management guarantees that a legal user, without revealing his/her real identity, can join a group after finishing the mutual authentication with the group initiator, and enforces the forward secrecy and backward secrecy.
