A couple of discharge parameters are measured and analyzed, correlation investigation are performed between charge voltage, approach speed and discharge parameters. Rampe-Weazel formula is employed to model short-gap electrostatic discharge(ESD) in air from charged human body. Threshold phenomenon appears at charge voltage of 800V; discharge parameters reach extreme values whereas the strongest effect exists for approach speed on discharge parameters. The influence of charge voltage and approach speed on discharge parameters has an obvious reductive tendency for charge voltage below 600V or over 1000V.

The objective of this study is to propose a model for planning course registration by using a data mining technique: Bayesian network. The proposed model can be used to predict the sequences of courses to be registered by undergraduate students whose majors are computer science or engineering. The data set was obtained from student enrollments and include GPA and grades in each subject for first and second year students from a private university in Thailand. Evaluations show that the predictive power of this model is acceptable. The implications from this studypsilas findings suggest that the model can be applied for advising students in planning courses to be registered in each semester. Further, the model appears to be useful for improving curriculum development in order to fit both studentspsila and university requirements.

Landscape ecology traditionally has been limited to the study of terrestrial systems;however, the questions and methods defining the science are equally relevant for marine and coastal systems. The reciprocal relationship between spatial pattern and ecological processes and the overarching effect of scale on this relationship was being explored in some marine and coastal settings as the general discipline of landscape ecology was evolving throughout the latter two decades of the last century. As with all components of the biosphere, an understanding of these relationships is critical for successful management of marine and coastal systems. In these systems, widely dispersed field or ship-based observations and lack of broad scale data have historically precluded quantification of large-scale patterns and processes and hindered management efforts. However, relatively recent advances in geographic information systems, remote sensing and computer technologies have begun to address these issues and are now permitting assessments of pattern and process in oceans. The intent of this special issue is to highlight research that is adapting the tools of landscape ecology to answer ecological questions within marine and coastal systems, to address the unique challenges faced in these landscapes, and to stimulate an exchange of ideas and solutions to common problems. Inspiration for this special issue of Landscape Ecology began with a special session on "Marine and Coastal Applications in Landscape Ecology" that was held at the 19th Annual Symposium of the United States Regional Association of the International Association for Landscape Ecology, March 31-April 2, 2004 in Las Vegas, Nevada. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Persons with electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) complain of subjective symptoms such as headaches, insomnia, memory loss etc. resulting from radio frequency (RF) radiation by cellular phones. There have been various EHS provocation studies on heart rate, blood pressure, and subjective symptoms using GSM phones. However, there are few provocation studies on case-control study investigating simultaneously physiological parameters from CDMA phones. In this study, two volunteer groups of 18 self-declared EHS and 19 controls were exposed to both sham and real RF exposures by a CDMA cellular phone for half an hour each. We investigated the physiological parameters such as heart rates, respiration rates, and hear rate variability (HRV). In conclusion, the RF exposure by a CDMA cellular phone did not have any effects on the physiological parameters for both groups.

Cancer classification through gene expression data analysis has emerged as an active area of research recently. Gene expression is the process of transcribing a gene's DNA sequence into RNA. A gene's expression level indicates the approximate number of copies of that gene's RNA produced in a cell. This is thought to correlate with the amount of the corresponding protein made. The expression of a gene provides a measure of activity of a gene under certain biochemical conditions. For example, cancers are usually reflected in the change of the expression values of certain genes. Recent studies on molecular level classification of tissues have produced remarkable results, and indicated that gene expression assays could significantly aid in the development of efficient cancer diagnosis and classification platforms. However, cancer classification based on the DNA array data is still a difficult problem. The main challenge is the overwhelming number of genes relative to the number of training samples. This implies that we must deal with a huge number of irrelevant genes. An efficient algorithm is required to reduce the computational overhead. The other challenge is from the presence of noise inherent in the data set. It makes accurate classification of data more difficult when the sample size is small. This paper applies genetic algorithms (GA) for selecting a group of relevant genes from cancer microarray data. Then the decision tree based cancer classifier is built on top of these selected genes. The performance of this approach is evaluated by comparing with other gene selection methods (e.g., t-statistics, GS method, and information gain) using the publicly available gene expression data set such as Colon, Leukemia, Lymphoma, Lung and central nervous system (CNS). Experimental results indicate that the cascade of GA and decision tree has the highest accuracy rate among different methods.

As the use of digital television (D-TV) has spread across the globe, usability problems on D-TV have become an important issue. However, so far, very little has been done in the usability studies on D-TV. The aim of this study is developing evaluation methods for the user interface (UI) of a personalized electronic program guide (pEPG) of D-TV, and evaluating the UI of a working prototype of pEPG using this method. To do this, first, the structure of the UI system and navigation for a working prototype of pEPG was designed considering the expanded channel. Secondly, the evaluation principles as the usability method for a working prototype of pEPG were developed. Third, labbased usability testing for a working prototype of pEPG was conducted with these evaluation principles. The usability problems founded by usability testing were reflected to improve the UI of a working prototype of pEPG. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

Recent studies on molecular level classification of tissues have produced remarkable results, and indicated that gene expression assays could significantly aid in the development of efficient cancer diagnosis and classification platforms. However, cancer classification based on the DNA array data is still a difficult problem. The main challenge is the overwhelming number of genes relative to the number of training samples. It makes accurate classification of data more difficult. This paper applies genetic algorithms (GA) with an initial solution provided by t-statistics (t-GA) for selecting a group of relevant genes from cancer microarray data. The decision tree based cancer classifier is then built on top of these selected genes. The performance of this approach is evaluated by comparing with other gene selection methods using the publicly available gene expression datasets. Experimental results indicate that t-GA has the highest accurate rate among different methods. The Z-score figure also shows that the gene selection operation provided by t-GA is reproducible. © 2007 IEEE.
