The purpose of our research was to identify challenges middle grades educators face as they strive to disrupt for justice in their predominantly white schools/districts. developmentally and culturally responsive education for all middle grades students calls on educators to embrace justice-oriented teaching. Yet middle grades teachers attempting to disrupt unjust practices and policies are often met with significant challenges that can undermine their efforts. Research illustrating these challenges could help justice-oriented middle grades teachers and leaders prepare for and proactively address these challenges. This article draws on the experiences of a group of middle grades educators to illustrate the numerous challenges they faced while leading and engaging in justice-oriented initiatives in the predominantly white state of Vermont. We describe four categories of challenges faced by the group: (a) institutional challenges; (b) interpersonal challenges; (c) pedagogic challenges; and (d) inner challenges. Drawn from the findings, we offer implications for justice-oriented middle grades teachers, administrators, and teacher educators.

Background: Asthma and atopic dermatitis are common allergic conditions that contribute to substantial health loss, economic burden, and pain across individuals of all ages worldwide. Therefore, as a component of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2021, we present updated estimates of the prevalence, disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), incidence, and deaths due to asthma and atopic dermatitis and the burden attributable to modifiable risk factors, with forecasted prevalence up to 2050. Methods: Asthma and atopic dermatitis prevalence, incidence, DALYs, and mortality, with corresponding 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs), were estimated for 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2021. A systematic review identified data from 389 sources for asthma and 316 for atopic dermatitis, which were further pooled using the Bayesian meta-regression tool. We also described the age-standardised DALY rates of asthma attributable to four modifiable risk factors: high BMI, occupational asthmagens, smoking, and nitrogen dioxide pollution. Furthermore, as a secondary analysis, prevalence was forecasted to 2050 using the Socio-demographic Index (SDI), air pollution, and smoking as predictors for asthma and atopic dermatitis. To assess trends in the burden of asthma and atopic dermatitis before (2010–19) and during (2019–21) the COVID-19 pandemic, we compared their average annual percentage changes (AAPCs). Findings: In 2021, there were an estimated 260 million (95% UI 227–298) individuals with asthma and 129 million (124–134) individuals with atopic dermatitis worldwide. Asthma cases declined from 287 million (250–331) in 1990 to 238 million (209–272) in 2005 but increased to 260 million in 2021. Atopic dermatitis cases consistently rose from 107 million (103–112) in 1990 to 129 million (124–134) in 2021. The current study focused on the effective green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from Boerhaavia diffusa (BD) leaf extract, demonstrating their potential in antibacterial, anticancer, and photocatalytic applications. The formation of B. diffusa silver nanoparticles (BD-AgNPs) was confirmed by an absorption peak at 420 nm using UV–visible spectroscopy. Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy represented the presence of bioactive functional groups in BD that were involved in the reduction and capping of BD-AgNPs. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the crystalline nature and face-centered cubic (fcc) structure of BD-AgNPs. Further, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) results confirmed that the BD-AgNPs were small in size and had an average particle size of 30 nm. The presence of Ag peaks with a significant signal at 3.0 keV was shown by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The biosynthesized BD-AgNPs showed the highest antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (18 ± 0.75) and Staphylococcus aureus (16 ± 0.58) and also shows MIC assay shows lowest value of BD-AgNPs against E. coli (7.25 μg/mL) and S. aureus (12.75 μg/mL), respectively. The BD-AgNPs were also found to be cytotoxic against A549 lung cancer cells. Furthermore, BD-AgNPs demonstrated 91.26 % photodegradation efficacy for methyl orange (MO) after 200 min of exposure under sunlight irradiation. The findings indicate that these biogenic BD-AgNPs possess significant antibacterial properties and cytotoxic effects on lung cancer cells (A549), suggesting their utility in medical treatments. In addition, the high efficiency in photocatalytic degradation of pollutants underscores their environmental remediation capabilities, making them valuable in healthcare and environmental sectors.

This study aimed to enhance the phytochemical yield from Piper betel L. leaves by optimizing microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) parameters using response surface methodology (RSM). The optimized conditions were found to be 239.6 W (microwave power), 1.58 min (extraction time), and 1:22 (solid-to-solvent ratio). Under these conditions, the extract yield was 8.92 %, with a total phenolic content (TPC) of 77.98 mg GAE/g, total flavonoid content (TFC) of 38.99 mg QUE/g, antioxidant activity of 62.95 %, and chlorophyll content of 42.02 mg/mL. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis identified key bioactive compounds, including phytol and neophytadiene. Structural analysis by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed substantial cellular disruption, confirming efficient extraction. Furthermore, the extract demonstrated strong antibacterial activity against E. coli , B. cereus , K. pneumoniae , and B. pumilus . These findings underscore the effectiveness of optimized MAE in extracting potent phytochemicals from betel leaves, reinforcing its potential in natural product development and therapeutic applications.

Background: Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, and affects people regardless of country, age group, or sex. Using the most recent evidentiary and analytical framework from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD), we produced location-specific, age-specific, and sex-specific estimates of diabetes prevalence and burden from 1990 to 2021, the proportion of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in 2021, the proportion of the type 2 diabetes burden attributable to selected risk factors, and projections of diabetes prevalence through 2050. Methods: Estimates of diabetes prevalence and burden were computed in 204 countries and territories, across 25 age groups, for males and females separately and combined;these estimates comprised lost years of healthy life, measured in disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs;defined as the sum of years of life lost [YLLs] and years lived with disability [YLDs]). We used the Cause of Death Ensemble model (CODEm) approach to estimate deaths due to diabetes, incorporating 25 666 location-years of data from vital registration and verbal autopsy reports in separate total (including both type 1 and type 2 diabetes) and type-specific models. Other forms of diabetes, including gestational and monogenic diabetes, were not explicitly modelled. Total and type 1 diabetes prevalence was estimated by use of a Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2.1, to analyse 1527 location-years of data from the scientific literature, survey microdata, and insurance claims;type 2 diabetes estimates were computed by subtracting type 1 diabetes from total estimates. Mortality and prevalence estimates, along with standard life expectancy and disability weights, were used to calculate YLLs, YLDs, and DALYs. Objective To understand the current knowledge gaps regarding malnutrition and dysphagia among healthcare professionals worldwide. Design An anonymous online cross-sectional survey was developed in English and translated into six languages. It comprised 26 questions divided into three categories: demographics, current clinical practice, and educational needs. Data were collected between July 2023 and January 2024. Participants Healthcare professionals and students involved in the care of dysphagia patients worldwide. Analysis Descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis. Results A total of 877 responses, predominantly from dietitians (44.3%) and speech therapists (29.2%) across 54 countries, were analyzed. Only about one-third of participants reported consistent nutrition screening and the use of validated tools. Nearly half (46%) indicated that less than 60% of malnourished dysphagia patients received interventions. The most common (22%) knowledge source was work experience, whereas clinicians’ knowledge was a key challenge in managing malnutrition in dysphagia patients. Conclusions and Implications Knowledge among international healthcare professionals on malnutrition and dysphagia may be inadequate, and there may be an underuse of validated tools for nutrition screening. These results call for the need to develop a targeted education program that addresses the current knowledge gap on malnutrition and dysphagia among healthcare professionals.

New directions in socioscientific issues research

The socioscientific issues framework has proven to have a significant impact over the last two decades on many areas related to the development of functional scientific literacy in students. In this article, we summarize and synthesize recent trends in socioscientific issues research that impact both disciplinary and interdisciplinary science education research. These trends represent science-in-context investigations that we propose are advanced by three broad and interrelated areas of research including: 1) Socioscientific Issues and the Central Role of Socioscientific Reasoning;2) Socioscientific Issues and the Primacy of Socioscientific Perspective Taking;and, 3) Socioscientific Issues and the Importance of Informal and Place-Based Contexts. We discuss the most recent research in those areas and explore the educational significance these new trends. © The Author(s) 2019.

The Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) is a widely used measure of a core facet of the positive body image construct. However, extant research concerning measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across a large number of nations remains limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset - with data collected between 2020 and 2022 - to assess measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis indicated that full scalar invariance was upheld across all nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups, suggesting that the unidimensional BAS-2 model has widespread applicability. There were large differences across nations and languages in latent body appreciation, while differences across gender identities and age groups were negligible-to-small. Additionally, greater body appreciation was significantly associated with higher life satisfaction, being single (versus being married or in a committed relationship), and greater rurality (versus urbanicity). Across a subset of nations where nation-level data were available, greater body appreciation was also significantly associated with greater cultural distance from the United States and greater relative income inequality. These findings suggest that the BAS-2 likely captures a near-universal conceptualisation of the body appreciation construct, which should facilitate further cross-cultural research.
