The increasing recognition of the importance of Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) stems from its capability to improve energy awareness and offer valuable insights for the formulation of energy programs. Many existing NILM methodologies often depend on specialized equipment to capture complex high-frequency signal data, which limits their feasibility in practical applications, especially when smart meters only provide low-frequency active power data for residential use. In this study, we introduce a novel method that leverages readily available weather data to enhance the feature set of low-sampling NILM models. We formulate a federated learning (FL) model, adapted from a sequence-to-sequence model, to disaggregate extremely low sampling rate smart meter records without the need for data exchange. Our experiments demonstrate that the FL framework, particularly FedProx, effectively handles statistical heterogeneity and alleviates concerns related to overfitting. By integrating weather data, our approach markedly enhances NILM performance while maintaining the confidentiality of user data. The experiment shows our proposed sequence-to-sequence model improves the Eacc from 0.8365 to 0.8557 on FedAvg framework and from 0.8470 to 0.8564 on FedProx.

The integration of renewable energy sources into the power grid introduces significant volatility, which presents new challenges to maintaining reliable power supply. This increased volatility amplifies the demand for energy storage solutions within distribution networks. To address these challenges, this paper first develops an analytical reliability assessment model and embeds it into an energy storage configuration model. Then the model is converted into a Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model for efficient solution. Case studies demonstrate that this approach can be used for energy storage planning according to different reliability requirements.

The paper deals with Industry 4.0 as an information industry in which computer systems and networks are highly integrated with physical manufacturing processes. It includes the use of various technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), computer-aided manufacturing and design, data analytics, etc. One such technology is Virtual (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). Data input in VR has great potential for Industry 4.0. The proposed technology can create more efficient and realistic training simulations, improve product design and creation processes, and develop new ways of interacting with information and data. The technology is proposed as add-ons to virtual and augmented reality helmets.

Solid oxide electrolysis system requires electrical and thermal energy. Five scenarios are defined according to various cases of external heat sources coupling and electrical energy sources. Three methods are proposed to track variations in electrical or thermal load, including constant flow rate (F method), constant steam utilization (Us method) and constant cell operating voltage (V method). Through system process simulation, the applicability of three methods in different scenarios is explored to obtain load regulation strategies. In the scenario coupled with low-temperature heat and intermittent power and the scenario with no heat coupling, the F method is preferred at high loads and the V method is preferred at low loads, while it is the opposite in the scenario coupled with high-temperature heat and intermittent power. The V method is preferred at low loads in the scenario coupled with low-temperature heat and high loads in the scenario coupled with high-temperature heat. © The Electrochemical Society.

Performance-Aware control of Modular Batteries For Fast Frequency Response

Modular batteries can be aggregated to deliver frequency regulation services for power grids. Although utilizing the idle capacity of battery modules is financially attractive, it remains challenging to consider the heterogeneous module-level characteristics such as dynamic operational efficiencies and battery degradation. In addition, real-time decision making within seconds is required to enable fast frequency response. In order to address these issues, this paper proposes a performance-aware scheduling approach for battery modules to deliver fast frequency response (FFR) support. In particular, the conduction loss and switching loss of battery packs as well as converters are captured within a mix-integer quadratic constrained program (MIQCP). The cycle-based aging model identifies the aging cost of battery modules during frequent cycling by introducing the aging subgradient calculation and linearization. Case studies based on real-world battery data show that the proposed scheduling approach can effectively reduce power loss cost by nearly 28%-57% and battery aging cost by 4%-15% compared to conventional methods, which can also enhance the SoC balance. © 2010-2012 IEEE.

The wide-band oscillation resulting from the interaction between power electronics and the power grid is increasingly evident to the power system. It is necessary to monitor the dynamic behavior of the wide-band oscillation. However, the existing phasor measurement unit (PMU) and the corresponding wide-area measurement system (WAMS) can hardly capture wide-band phasors. To get a better view of wide-band oscillation, a measurement method to capture wide-band phasors is proposed in this paper, as well as a frame of a corresponding wide-area monitoring system for wide-band oscillation (WOMS) is constructed. The prototype of the wide-band phasor measurement unit (WPMU)-based on this measurement method is developed. The essential software and hardware of the WPMU are elaborated. The steady tests and dynamic tests are executed to verify the capability of the WPMU. The results indicate that WPMU and WOMS are highly effective in analyzing wide-band oscillation. © 2022 IEEE.

A wheelchair is a specialized form of Personal Mobility Vehicle (PMV) designed to help people with disabilities move safely to their desired locations. Unlike conventional PMVs, wheelchairs for people with disabilities are challenging to manually control in environments with heavy traffic. This study focuses on designing and feasibility testing of control systems for PMVs to meet safety and efficiency standards, even in complex environments. First, a control structure model for PMVs is proposed. This is followed by the application of a combination of First In First Out (FIFO) and Dijkstra traffic control methods to determine effective trajectories for PMVs. The proposed control system is then tested on the campus of the University of Transport and Communications. Simulation results show that when comparing the travel time of 10 PMVs, the order execution time for each PMV remains stable (within 10%) for up to 20 PMVs. However, when the number of PMVs increases to 25, 30, 35, and 40 vehicles, the order execution time increases by 35%, 55%, 103%, and 119%, respectively. These results demonstrate that the system can control a large number of PMVs, ensuring safety, flexibility, and efficiency. © 2024 Budapest University of Technology and Economics. Owing to the unique technological merits of additive manufacturing (AM), design for AM, particularly eco-design for AM, has been gaining attention in improving the sustainable performance of AM-fabricated (AMed) parts. The main challenge in harvesting potential sustainability benefits is how to capture the impact of design on sustainable performance. Though several existing studies adopted quantitative evaluation on AM sustainability and investigated the relationships between design information and sustainability information of AMed part, the sustainability information is still unavailable in the design phase. This hardly guides eco-design for AM in practice. To support the increasing industrial applications of AM, this paper illustrates related knowledge, that is, material-process-structure-ecoProperty (MPSeP) relationships to connect design and sustainability information in eco-design for AM. An ontology-based method is proposed to model the MPSeP relationships of the AMed part in a structured way. An example of an AMed hydraulic valve body was used to demonstrate the MPSeP modeling process. It is discussed that how the constructed model effectively assists AM designers through providing eco-design recommendation, and enables design software tools to perform sustainability analysis towards eco-design for AM. © 2024 The Author(s).

Concerns over the energy and environmental crisis are driving the strategic integration of distributed generators (DGs) in power systems, hastening the shift to sustainable energy. Microgrids (MGs) emerged as self-reliant, localized power solutions for DGs integration, enhancing grid performance and reliability by allowing grid-connected and islanded modes of operation. Moreover, the dc nature of many DGs and household devices, together with the progress in power electronics, have shifted research from conventional ac MGs towards dc and hybrid ac/dc MGs, which increase the complexity and the number of control scenarios. Therefore, the MG control environment require advanced data-driven algorithms to overcome the stochasticity and non-linear characteristics of MGs systems. In this context, artificial intelligence (AI) techniques demonstrate high potential for enhancing the control and operation in the dynamic MG environment. This paper reviews the most recent research effort regarding the application of AI-based technology in the hierarchical control structure for ac, dc and hybrid ac/dc MG architectures.

Rotating machinery is an integral part of many industrial systems. Domain adaptation technique provides a powerful tool to detect faults under different working conditions. However, there is still a challenge: conventional domain adaptation approach only works under the 'closed set' assumption that all test classes are known at training time. In practice, a more realistic situation is 'open set', i.e., knowledge is incomplete in the training process, resulting in unknown classes during the testing. In this paper, a sparse autoencoder based adversarial open set domain adaptation (SAOSDA) model is proposed for rotating machinery fault diagnosis under open set scenarios, which can recognize the unknown faults and detect the known faults under different working conditions. This model utilizes adversarial learning to reduce the discrepancies between source samples and known target samples and reject the unknown target samples simultaneously. Experimental results of the actual bearing dataset verify the superiority and effectiveness of this method. © 2022 IEEE.
