Cost-optimal model predictive scheduling of home appliances

A novel heuristic model-based optimal scheduling algorithm is proposed in this paper to operate heating and cooling type home appliances connected to smart grids where the price of the electrical energy is known in advance and temperature constraints are present. The properties and the use of the proposed algorithm are shown using a simple refrigerator model. The accuracy and the computational properties of the proposed method are compared to the schedule generated by the MPT toolbox. The algorithm works well with a relatively short prediction horizon using a fraction of the computing time needed for the MPT-based method. The robustness of the algorithm is also investigated with respect to the load of the refrigerator. It is shown that the designed schedule with an empty refrigerator is always suitable, yet not optimal, for any loaded case. © 2017

We present a detailed set of performance comparisons of two state-of-the-art solvers for the application of designing time-delay compensators, an important problem in the field of robust control. Formulating such robust control mechanics as constrained optimization problems often involves objective and constraint functions that are both nonconvex and nonsmooth, both of which present significant challenges to many solvers and their end-users hoping to obtain good solutions to these problems. In our particular engineering task, the main difficulty in the optimization arises in a nonsmooth and nonconvex stability constraint, which states that the infinite spectrum of zeros of the so-called shaper should remain in the open left half-plane. To perform our evaluation, we make use β-relative minimization profiles, recently introduced visualization tools that are particularly suited for benchmarking solvers on nonsmooth, nonconvex, constrained optimization problems. Furthermore, we also introduce new visualization tools, called Global-Local Profiles, which for a given problem and a fixed computational budget, assess the tradeoffs of distributing the budget over few or many starting points, with the former getting more budget per point and latter less. In this research we propose a new clustering scheme based on a combination of a well known stochastic, population-based Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) and the k-means algorithm to select optimal reference nodes in a Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). In the proposed scheme the process of grouping sensors into clusters reference nodes is based on a K-means clustering algorithm to divide the initial population and select the best position in the neighbourhood to exchange information between clusters. In cases when sensor nodes receive multiple synchronization messages from more than one reference node a weighted average method is used. In this paper we limit our research on a number of benchmark functions which are used to compare the performance of the proposed algorithm with other important meta-heuristic algorithms to show its superiority. © 2017, Springer International Publishing AG.

This paper presents an effective adaptive controller for revolute joints robot manipulator where the control input is accompanied with a random disturbance (with unknown PSD). It is clear that, disturbance can compromise the overall performance of the system. To cope with this problem, a control technique is proposed which uses the concept of exponential practical stability. Unlike other counterparts, the proposed method does not need information such as the physical parameters of robot and gravitational acceleration. The results show that the proposed controller achieves an excellent performance clearly seen from the tracking error and its derivatives. © 2017 Association for Computing Machinery.

The condensing flow model is developed to predict the non-equilibrium condensation of CO2 in a converging-diverging nozzle using computational fluid dynamics modelling, which is expected to contribute to the carbon capture and storage. The numerical result shows that the nucleation process of CO2 occurs in the downstream of the nozzle throat where the extremely non-equilibrium state is reached, which generates the maximum value of the nucleation rate of approximately 2.5 x 1018 m−3 s−1. The excessive nucleation induces the growth of the condensed droplet and the liquid fraction increase in the diverging part of the supersonic nozzle with achieving 8% of the total mass at the nozzle exit.

Intraoperative tracking of laparoscopic instruments is often a prerequisite for computer and roboticassisted interventions. While numerous methods for detecting, segmenting and tracking of medical instruments based on endoscopic video images have been proposed in the literature, key limitations remain to be addressed: Firstly, robustness, that is, the reliable performance of state-of-the-art methods when run on challenging images (e.g. in the presence of blood, smoke or motion artifacts). Secondly, generalization;algorithms trained for a specific intervention in a specific hospital should generalize to other interventions or institutions. In an effort to promote solutions for these limitations, we organized the Robust Medical Instrument Segmentation (ROBUST-MIS) challenge as an international benchmarking competition with a specific focus on the robustness and generalization capabilities of algorithms. For the first time in the field of endoscopic image processing, our challenge included a task on binary segmentation and also addressed multi-instance detection and segmentation. The challenge was based on a surgical data set comprising 10,040 annotated images acquired from a total of 30 surgical procedures from three different types of surgery. The validation of the competing methods for the three tasks (binary segmentation, multi-instance detection and multi-instance segmentation) was performed in three different stages with an increasing domain gap between the training and the test data. The results confirm the initial hypothesis, namely that algorithm performance degrades with an increasing domain gap. While the average detection and segmentation quality of the best-performing algorithms is high, future research should concentrate on detection and segmentation of small, crossing, moving and transparent instrument(s) (parts). This paper presents a method that can recognize anatomy regions in Computed Tomography (CT) examinations. In this work the human body is divided into eleven regions from the foot to the head. The proposed method consists of two main parts. In the first step, a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is used to classify the axial slices of the CT exam. The accuracy of the initial classification is 93.4 %. As the neural network processes the axial slices independently from each other, no spatial coherence is guaranteed. To ensure the contentious labeling the initial classification step is followed by a post-processing method that incorporates the expected order and size of the anatomical regions to improve the labeling. In this way, the accuracy is increased to 94.0 %, the confusion of non-neighboring regions dropped from 1.5 % to 0.0 %. This means that a continuous and outlier free labeling is obtained. The method was trained on a set of 320 CT exams and evaluated on another set of 160 cases. © 2018 Budapest University of Technology and Economics. All Rights Reserved.

The expected growth in the mobile video (including streaming video, video downloading, conferencing, etc.) now is the key driver for rapid development of 5G wireless network technologies. This paradigm forces wireless networks to manage their resources as effectively as possible. One of the most appropriate solutions for video traffic that may provide the sufficient spectral efficiency is multicasting. Multicast sessions allows a group of users to simultaneously access the same multimedia content with the same QoE parameters. In this paper we consider different methods of multicast subgrouping. An analytical framework in the from of a queuing network is proposed to study the network performance, and a comparative study of network performance metrics under different user movement scenarios is presented. Modelling and simulation of the dynamic indoor relative humidity behaviour of a building is essential to test any proposed thermal comfort controller and strategy in the building. Like other plants, the dynamic indoor relative humidity behaviour of a building can be developed based on the white box model, black box model, and grey box model. This research focuses on the usage of autoregressive–moving-average (ARMA) model, a type of black box model to represent the dynamic indoor relative humidity behaviour of Industrial Instrumentation Laboratory at Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), UniversitiTeknologi Malaysia (UTM) Kuala Lumpur and uses the real recorded data from the laboratory and minimal knowledge regarding the physical characteristics of the humidity behaviour in the laboratory. The performance of the ARMA model developed in this research is compared with the real recorded data from the laboratory. Result obtained shows that the ARMA model is enough for modelling and simulating the dynamic indoor relative humidity behaviour of the laboratory

Implementation of mobile sensor communication system on multicell networks

A monitoring technology for large area with low-cost and high efficiency is highly demanded. Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is the solution for a monitoring technology. However, not all monitoring must be continuous, there are some monitoring that can be carried out periodically. Therefore, it is possible to invent a mobile sensor communication system on multicell networks. This research aims to implement a WSN system by collecting data from mobile sensors on multicell networks. The focus of research is on the design of mobile sensor communication with low-cost device as transceivers, namely NodeMCU. The design is implemented using 4 NodeMCU units, 3 of them are functioned as access points, while 1 unit is employed as a client connected to the sensor. The experimentation was conducted by varying transmission distances of sensors with and without barriers. Moreover, handover and blankspot areas are also included accordingly. The result of experimentation shows that the usage of low-cost devices has still a possibility to build monitoring mechanism on multicell networks even though the transmission power was significantly influenced by the availability of barriers.
