It is commonly accepted that universities are an important source of new knowledge, especially in the science and technology sector. The mechanisms to transfer this new knowledge from academia to business organizations are widely discussed by many authors. This paper presents how web collaboration environments may help in distance knowledge transfer and also a web conferencing example meant to stress the factors which led to a successful web meeting for knowledge diffusion. Safety and reliability belong to the main quality attributes of a safety relevant control system. If a communication system is a component of a safety relevant control system then because of its properties it can also significantly affect the safety and reliability of the entire safety relevant control system. Safety and reliability attributes of a communication system can be influenced by a proper application of a so-called ratio criterion. Although the ratio criterion is often being utilised in practical applications, the parameters of ratio criterion are usually set intuitively. The contribution is focused on the problem of ratio counter parameters choice, which in co-operation with the safety code decoder provides operational checking of a non-trusted transmission system.

This paper deals with design of continuous-time robustly stabilizing Proportional-Integral (PI) controllers for interval systems using the combination of Kronecker summation method, sixteen plant theorem and an algebraic approach to controller tuning. The effectiveness and practical applicability of the proposed method is demonstrated in both simulation and real experiments including control of a third order nonlinear electronic plant.

A portable capacitance tomography system for real-time imaging of multiphase flows is developed and presented in this work. The earlier research shows that the electrical Capacitance Tomography (ECT) System is applicable in flow visualization (image reconstruction). The acquired concentration profile that obtains from capacitance measurements is able to imaging liquid and gas mixture in pipelines meanwhile the system development is designed to attach on a vessel. The electrode plates which act as the sensor has been assembled and fixed on the pipeline, thus it causes difficulty for the production to have any new process installation in the future. Therefore portable capacitance is a new approach technology on ECT system. The purpose of the system is for on-line monitoring of concentration profile in multiphase flow-rate measurement system for oil, water and gas flow in oil pipelines.

This paper presents the development of an ultrasonic transmission-mode tomography system for the detection of small gas bubble using higher frequency ultrasonic sensors. The selection of the sensors is important and must be suitable to the application design. Consideration on the natural limitation of ultrasonic wave is also noted as the higher the frequency of the ultrasonic transducer, the better the sensitivity but lower penetration depth. 16-pairs of these ultrasonic sensors are installed and fixed inside a sensor jig which is designed to hold all the sensors. The sensor jig is also mounted on the circumference of a vertical column which will be used as the investigated process vessel. The developments presented also include the non-invasive fabrication techniques, the electronic measurement circuits, image reconstruction technique, and finally on the imaging results of the proposed system.

Magnetic induction tomography (MIT) is among the new technology that compliment other tomography methods such as ultrasonic, optical, capacitance and several others. This type of tomography applies the magnetic field to detect the existence of the object that is going to image. Several methods are possible in constructing the magnetic induction hardware. Most of the researchers used coils for both transmitter and receiver which are more complicated and need large space. The Hall Effect sensors (HES) have the potential of replacing the coil at the receiver side since it has the ability to measure the value of magnetic field strength and convert it to voltage value. This concept is same as the ultrasonic sensors used in ultrasonic tomography instrumentation hardware. The results have shown that the pattern of capture data by hall effect sensor are almost the same pattern for all 8 sensors for each material used. This have given positive sign that HES is capable to be applied in MIT measurement system.

The aim of the paper is to find out which knowledge and requirements can improve control and try to compare predictive controller with some traditional control approaches for given specific thermal process. Base predictive controller uses information about MIMO system dynamics and constrains. The control response of such a controller is unfortunately similar to known simple approaches. control with predictive controller became beneficial after additional information (future set-point knowledge) and other requirements (minimal energy cost - optimal steady state energy consumption) were used.

Reactor furnace control design is described in this paper. Reactor furnace, as controlled plant, is significantly nonlinear system and control objectives are strict. Thus, special control technique has to be applied. In this case, discrete PID controller tuned by artificial intelligence techniques is chosen. After reactor furnace description and first principle model derivation, the control method is closely defined. Then, nonlinear neural model of the furnace is designed and control loop is connected.
