Metabolic or cell signalling pathways are examples of biochemical networks exhibiting possible complex dynamics in the form of steady-state multiplicity, sustained oscillations or even deterministic chaos. The origin of these nonlinear phenomena is not always well understood, nor it can be systematically predicted beyond a case by case basis. Despite considerable progress in dynamic aspects, efforts are still needed to develop efficient and robust methods of stabilization and control of reaction networks. In this work, we combine concepts and tools from irreversible thermodynamics and systems theory to explore the underlying dynamic properties of a general class of chemical and biochemical networks. Lyapunov and passivity based methods are given for the systematic design of globally stabilizing feedback controllers in both the concentration space and a novel minimal description of the kinetic networks dynamics: the reaction space.

The intelligence of the CAM segment involves three distinct areas: the physical layer (hardware devices); the real-time process management software (knowledge-based decisions); the open, modular CAM software (object-oriented concept). Considering a case study for a multifunctional manufacturing structure producing mechanical assemblies, the paper proposes intelligent control components and a new organization of the CAM software system (ICAM). The Open System Approach allows, through a set of utilities and standard information data bases, to modify and interconnect any devices/programs produced by different manufacturers, or user-developed. The solution for the flexible ICAM software is given by the Object-Oriented Concept. Software connectors have been used between objects to emulate electrical and mechanical links, by means of the message passing technique. Events are transformed into messages between objects based on the Event Driven Architectural Concept. Final aspects are reported in the paper concerning the modular structure of the ICAM software.

The solution to the problem of finding the reaction kinetic realization of a given system obeying the mass action law containing the minimal/maximal number of reactions and complexes is shown in this paper. The proposed methods are based on Mixed Integer Linear Programming where the mass action kinetics is encoded into the linear constraints. Although the problems are NP-hard in the current setting, the developed algorithms give a usable answer to some of the questions first raised in [1].

Literature on processcontrol is awash with contributions made in the field of digital controller design. On the one hand there are great efforts to devise new control algorithms and controller design methods based on elegant mathemtics and state variables concealing even the most rudiræntary inner workings of a real process. Results are mostly documented by simulations. On the other hand there are contributions directed towards improving the digital equivalent of the traditional PID controller. The debate over the virtues of different versions of the PID algorithm gave way lately to the adaptive tuning of these controllers. This way a definite shift of emphasis can be noticed, but - at least in the author’s opinion - a general view, encompassing all of the basic features of a practical digital PID controller is still lacking. This paper is an attempt to meet this need.

In order to reduce the blast furnace coke rate, pulverized coal is injected through lances into the raceway in front of the tuyeres. Close inspection of the tuyeres is particularly important as critical incidents such as a tuyere blockage or burning of the injection lance can happen at any time. To increase Operation safety, Paul Wurth has developed the Tuyère Phenomena Detection System, a camera-based monitoring system for the tuyère and raceway area. The system allows simultaneous monitoring of all tuyères from a safe distance. At the same time an image recognition system processes the camera images to automatically detect phenomena of the injection lance and the tuyère.

Based on some relations discovered between the deterministic servo regulator and the PID design a simple design role is presented for stable processes to ensure 5% relative overshoot for the closed loop step response. The adaptive solution is based on the explicit identification of a second order process model with time delay. Extending the PID regulator by an appropriate correcting term the poorly damped or inverse unstable process zero is allowed to be a zero of the closed loop system, as well. Additional pole placement is also available.

For a reciprocal relation Q on a set of alternatives A, two transitivity frameworks which generalize both T-transitivity and stochastic transitivity are discussed: the framework of cycle-transitivity, introduced by the present authors [6] and which is based upon the ordering of the numbers Q(a,b), Q(b,c) and Q(c,a) for all (a,b,c)∈A3, and the framework of FG-transitivity, introduced by Swital-ski [21] as an immediate generalization of stochastic transitivity. The rules that enable to express FG-transitivity in the form of cycle-transitivity and cycle-transitivity in the form of FG-transitivity, illustrate that for reciprocal relations the concept of cycle-transitivity provides a framework that can cover more types of transitivity than does the concept of FG-transitivity.
