The bag of visual words model (BoW) and its variants have demonstrate their effectiveness for visual applications and have been widely used by researchers. The BoW model first extracts local features and generates the corresponding codebook, the elements of a codebook are viewed as visual words. The local features within each image are then encoded to get the final histogram representation. However, the codebook is dataset dependent and has to be generated for each image dataset. This costs a lot of computational time and weakens the generalization power of the BoW model. To solve these problems, in this paper, we propose to undo the dataset bias by codebook linear transformation. To represent every points within the local feature space using Euclidean distance, the number of bases should be no less than the space dimensions. Hence, each codebook can be viewed as a linear transformation of these bases. In this way, we can transform the pre-learned codebooks for a new dataset. However, not all of the visual words are equally important for the new dataset, it would be more effective if we can make some selection using sparsity constraints and choose the most discriminative visual words for transformation. We propose an alternative optimization algorithm to jointly search for the optimal linear transformation matrixes and the encoding parameters. Due to the semantic gap, the low-level features are not able to semantically represent images well. Besides, traditional semantic related image representation may not be able to cope with large inter class variations and are not very ro- bust to noise. To solve these problems, in this paper, we propose a novel image representation method in the sub- semantic space. First, examplar classifiers are trained by separating each training image from the others and serve as the weak semantic similarity measurement. Then a graph is constructed by combining the visual similarity and weak se- mantic similarity of these training images. We partition this graph into visually and semantically similar sub-sets. Each sub-set of images are then used to train classifiers in order to separate this sub-set from the others. The learned sub-set classifiers are then used to construct a sub-semantic space based representation of images. This sub-semantic space is not only more semantically meaningful but also more reli- Able and resistant to noise. Finally, we make categorization of images using this sub-semantic space based representation on several public datasets to demonstrate the e®ectiveness of the proposed method. Copyright © 2013 ACM.

This paper presents a shunt active power filter based on the concept of open-end winding (OEW) transformers. The proposed configuration is constituted of two converters with three legs each series connected throughout a three-phase OEW transformer. Model PWM strategy and control scheme are presented as well. The main advantage of the proposed system lies on the multi-level waveform generation, which allows reduction of either harmonic distortions or switching losses. This proposed topology is suitable for medium voltage (MV) distribution systems. Simulation and experimental results validate the theoretical study.

This paper presents a three-phase AC drive system to cope with three-phase applications in which high performance and reliability are required with reduced dc-link and switch voltages. The proposed topology employs a single isolation transformer processing only part of the total system power. Another interesting characteristic of the system is to adapt its configuration as a function of the machine speed: series mode, the machine is side converter operates in a series configuration at high speed and high voltage and parallel mode, the machine is side converter operates in a parallel configuration at low speed and low voltage. The parallel mode allows for a more balanced modulation index and becomes the drive capable to furnish high current at low speed, interesting for constant mechanical load power applications. The comprehensive model of the proposed systems and modulation strategies are presented. Simulated and experimental results are also presented.

The Exact Model Matching (EMM) problem knows an Approximate Model Matching (AMM) solution in the Fault Tolerant control (FTC) context, solution obtained using either the Modified Pseudo-Inverse Method (MPIM) or the Classical Robust Optimal Model Matching (CROMM) technique. In this paper, the authors reiterate the AMM solution with MPIM-CROMM and propose another hybrid technique of MPIM with Generalized Linear Quadratic Regulator (GLQR) stabilization and control correction using one of the ROMM variants, called the Extended approach (EROMM). The specificity of the MPIM-GLQR-EROMM as an AMM solution for FTC is also shown in its application on the B747 short-period model impaired with two structural and actuator faults.

Nonlinear state filters of different approximations and capabilities have been developed in the last decade. The quality of different nonlinear filters, in terms of the mean squared error (MSE) of the estimates, depends on the approximations used in the filtering algorithm;however, there are no known methods for effectively evaluating the relative performance of these filters. A new method which measures the performance of different state filters against the theoretical posterior Cramér-Rao lower bound (PCRLB) is proposed. The complex high-dimensional integrals in PCRLB are approximated using sequential Monte-Carlo (SMC) methods. Efficacy of the proposed method is illustrated through a simulation example. © 2012 IFAC.

A great deal of modern methods for investigation, monitoring and control of the processes in the area of mining and processing of earth resources utilize approaches based upon modeling of these processes using the mathematical or physical models. As it results from the last research works, majority of the real processes in general are fractional-order dynamical processes (arbitrary real order including integer order), however in some types of processes the order is very close to an integer order. In these cases the application of fractional-order models is more adequate than integer-order models for the investigation of these dynamical processes. Comparison of the methods for solving fractional-order mathematical models we have described in our past paper on the 10th International Multidisciplinary Scientific Geo-Conference-SGEM 2011. The solution of many practical problems can be simplified with the help of electronic analog models utilizing so called fractional-order elements or constant phase elements. This paper is devoted to the design and realization of the electronic fractional-order model of the fractional-order system whose mathematical model is fractional-order differential equation. In this paper we propose a decentralized nonlinear controller that has the ability to enhance the transient stability and achieve voltage regulation simultaneously for multimachine power systems. This paper extends the existing work on the construction of TS fuzzy model using linearly independent functions from nonlinear systems. This approach is based on Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy controller via parallel distributed compensation (PDC) method. The stability analysis and control design problems can be reduced to linear matrix inequality (LMI) problems. Based on only local measurements, the designed fuzzy state feedback controller guarantees stability and satisfies desired transient responses. The proposed controller is applied to two-generator infinite bus power system. Simulation results illustrate the performance of the developed approach regardless of the system operating conditions. © 2012 IEEE.

This paper shows a new approximated model-based sliding mode controller (SMC) design for continuous-time systems with multiple time delays in states, inputs and outputs. The synthesis design procedure is composed of two steps. At the first step, based on the unit-step response data of the afore-mentioned system, an approximated continuous-time state-space model and its transfer function are determined using the balanced realization and model reduction methods. At the second step, a SMC is designed using the internal model principle to achieve the desired reference model tracking performance. A novel smooth function which substitutes for the exact sign function is presented to reduce the chattering effects. Illustrative example on a general form of distillation column model is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
