The paper describes a very simple class of adaptive PID regulators, where the the method is based on the explicit identification of the process and a design equation is used ensuring 5% overshoot in the step response. The algorithm is dedicated for micro-processor based compact controllers (MBCC's).

During the last 6 to 7 years microcomputers have been accepted in industry. Parallel to this fact, there was and is an increasing demand in distributed systems, to cope with the necessities of the running process and the reliability considerations, because the distribution of computer performance over the process is not only a question of demand of performance. For systems in use mainly on the basis of a serial data transfer the distribution is doing nothing else but providing a smaller part of a process with a processing element. This paper deals with a computer system, capable of increasing the performance by using a pool of processors to give the user the possibility to implement as many as necessary. By this, he is no longer forced to provide his system with more performance than the minimum.

The strong consistency of ML estimators for Partial Fraction Matrix (PFM) and Elementary SubSystem (ESS) representations of vector ARMA processes will be discussed for the case, when the structure is overestimated. The main results of the paper are the off-line strong consistency theorems of ML estimators for PFM representation, when the number of poles is overestimated and for the ESS representations when the number of ESS-s associated with the poles is overestimated.

Based on some relations discovered between the deterministic servo regulator and the PID design a simple design role is presented for stable processes to ensure 5% relative overshoot for the closed loop step response. The adaptive solution is based on the explicit identification of a second order process model with time delay. Extending the PID regulator by an appropriate correcting term the poorly damped or inverse unstable process zero is allowed to be a zero of the closed loop system, as well. Additional pole placement is also available.

This paper provides a context within which the role of human factors engineering (HFE) for Naval ship design may be understood. HFE is defined and its history as part of engineering design teams is traced. The role of HFE in ship systems design is defined, and the HFE Technology for Ships Program, managed by SEA 061R, is described. The rationale for inclusion of HFE in the design process is presented, the methodology whereby it is incorporated into the design process is detailed, methodology to assess the application of HFE is outlined, and the benefits that will accrue as a result of inclusion of HFE considerations in the design process are documented. The counterpoint to inclusion is illustrated through instances of design-induced human errors. A specific application of HFE in the acquisition process is illustrated through use of the Landing Craft, Air Cushion HFE program plan. The difficulties which may be encountered as the size of the target system expands are described. Potential roadblocks to the required incorporation of HFE are examined for their source and possible ameliorative steps.
