The department of Technology Systems (TSYS) at East Carolina University has implemented a new faculty mentoring process to enable junior faculty members to learn from senior faculty members as they prepare for a career in academia. Five tenured professors and associate professors in the TSYS department have recently established a new process to mentor faculty members within the department who have begun not yet completed their initial tenure process at a major university. This process includes a series of workshops regarding academic performance expectations during the early stages of an academic career. Our commitment to new faculty takes on several related, yet distinct features. Examples of these initiatives include: 1) reduced workloads for new faculty for the first two years to enable them to generate individual and collaborative research activities, funded grants, and publications, 2) periodic university-wide training to learn policies and procedures that affect day-to-day activities on a college campus, 3) periodic workshops hosted by senior faculty mentors, and 4) one-on-one discussions between senior faculty members and junior faculty members to encourage candid dialogue between professional colleagues. Another feature of the mentorship philosophy is a proposal to the dean of the college to offer newly hired faculty a contractual start date of July 1steach year instead of starting their contract one week prior to the start of fall classes, normally in late August. This additional period of time will be used to train new faculty in essential policies and procedures, to complete a variety of administrative tasks on campus, to get a head start on preparing for classes in the fall, and cleaning up those supplemental tasks that accompany every move to a new location. The Generation Challenge programme (GCP) is a global crop research consortium directed toward crop improvement through the application of comparative biology and genetic resources characterization to plant breeding. A key consortium research activity is the development of a GCP crop bioinformatics platform to support GCP research. This platform includes the following: (i) shared, public platform-independent domain models, ontology, and data formats to enable interoperability of data and analysis flows within the platform;(ii) web service and registry technologies to identify, share, and integrate information across diverse, globally dispersed data sources, as well as to access high-performance computational (HPC) facilities for computationally intensive, high-throughput analyses of project data;(iii) platform-specific middleware reference implementations of the domain model integrating a suite of public (largely open-access/-source) databases and software tools into a workbench to facilitate biodiversity analysis, comparative analysis of crop genomic data, and plant breeding decision making.

The WATERS Network (WATer and Environmental Research Systems Network) will be an integrated real-time distributed observing system which will enable academic and government scientists, engineers, educators, and practitioners to advance effective management of our nation's water resources by understanding human interactions with water and the natural and built environment. WATERS will provide easily accessible real time environmental data as well as analysis tools to engineers, scientists, educators, K- graduate students and policymakers so they can better understand how water quantity, quality and related components of the hydrologic cycle are impacted by natural and human influences. The WATERS strategic plan will be completed by July 2007 and requires constituent input. This paper describes the draft Conceptual Design and the Education Plan of WATERS Network. This paper will highlight the potential impact of WATERS on undergraduate and graduate environmental engineering education in order to elicit input from the environmental engineering education community on how WATERS Network could better meet the future needs of undergraduate and graduate students and educators. Current mammographic screening for breast cancer is less effective for younger women. To complement mammography for premenopausal women, we investigated the feasibility screening test using 98 blood serum proteins. Because the data set was very noisy and contained only weak features, we used a classifier designed for noisy data: decision fusion. Decision fusion outperformed both a support vector machine (SVM) and linear regression with forward stepwise feature selection on all three two-class classification tasks: normal tissue vs. cancer, normal tissue vs. benign lesions, and benign lesions vs. cancer. Decision fusion detected cancer moderately well (AUC=0.84 on normal vs. cancer), demonstrating promise as a screening tool. Decision fusion also detected benign lesions similarly well (AUC=0.83 on normal vs. benign lesions) and was the only classifier to achieve any success in separating benign from malignant lesions (AUC=0.64 on benign vs. cancer). The classification results suggest that the assayed proteins are more indicative of a secondary effect, such as immune response, rather than specific for breast cancer. In conclusion, the decision fusion classifier demonstrated some promise in detecting breast lesions and outperformed other classifiers, especially for the very noisy classification problem of distinguishing benign from malignant lesions.

The microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) method is capable of synthesizing various forms of carbon allotropes such as diamond, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and diamondlike carbon (DLC) while varying the growth parameters or utilizing substrate coated with catalytic thin film. In this article, needlelike carbon nanostructures (CNs) were synthesized utilizing high power (5 kW) and high working pressure (120 Torr) MPCVD on a thin catalytic film of nickel with a diffusion barrier layer of titanium on a micropatterned silicon substrate. The effects of in situ doping by trimethylboron (TMB) on the morphologies and field emission properties of the CNs were also investigated. Straight, needlelike CNs with random orientation were obtained for 15 min growth time with or without TMB doping. However, the CNs appear to transform into diamondlike nanocrystals after prolonged growth of 30 min with TMB doping. Unlike MPCVD grown CNTs, it was found that the CNs have strong adhesion to the substrate and could withstand postgrowth processing such as ultrasonic agitation cleaning in solvents. Field emission tests performed show that in situ TMB doping of the patterned needlelike CNs lowers the turn-on field of the cathode. A vacuum field emission triode with self-aligned gate utilizing CNs as the field emitter is also fabricated. © 2006 American Vacuum Society.

We present the use of the polysaccharide chitosan for immobilizing biomolecules on microfabricated device surfaces. The main advantages of chitosan are its abundance of primary amine groups and its ability to be electrodeposited. Biomolecules are easily attached to chitosan's amines by standard glutaraldehyde chemistry. The electrodeposition of chitosan allows accurate spatial and temporal control of biomolecule placement. We have demonstrated this biofunctionalization method for two different BioMEMS devices: a biophotonic sensor and a micromechanical biosensor. We have successfully assembled probe DNA on each of them and detected hybridization with target DNA as a demonstration of sensor operation. Here, we briefly present the fabrication procedure and testing results for both of these BioMEMS sensing devices. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper analyzes the effect of custom error control schemes on the energy efficiency in Bluetooth sensor networks. The energy efficiency metric considers in just one parameter the energy and reliability constraints of the wireless sensor networks. New packet types are introduced using some error control strategies in the AUX1 packet, such as Hamming and BCH codes, with and without CRC for error detection. Two adaptive techniques are proposed that change the error control strategy based on the number of hops traversed by a packet through the network. The performance results are obtained through simulations in a channel with Rayleigh fading for networks with different number of hops, showing that error control can improve the energy efficiency of a Bluetooth-based sensor network.

This paper proposes a supervised version of a learning algorithm for a constructive neuro-immune network. The proposed methodology is developed by taking ideas from the immune system and learning vector quantization. The resulting classification algorithm is characterized by high-performance, similar to the ones produced by alternative methods in the literature, and parsimonious solutions, with a much smaller set of prototypes per class when compared with the other approaches. The number of prototypes is automatically defined by the convergence criterion. The algorithm requires a single user-defined parameter for training, associated with the convergence criterion, and the computational cost is sufficiently reduced to support applications involving large data sets.

Identifying dead regions in the cochlea through the TEN Test

An audiogram is not sufficient to indicate cochlear dead regions. Aim: To investigate cochlear dead regions in sensorineural hearing loss subjects using the TEN test. Site: CEDALVI/ HRAC-USP-Bauru/Sao Paulo/Brazil, August 2003 to February 2004. Study Design: A contemporary cross-sectional cohort study. Material and Methods: The TEN test was applied in three groups: G1(5 women with pure-tone thresholds within normal limits);G2(4 women and 5 men with moderate sensorineural flat hearing loss);G3(19 women and 24 men with mild to severe sloping sensorineural hearing loss). Results: In the G1 group the TEN value required to eliminate the test tone was, on average, close to the absolute threshold for all frequencies. No dead regions were found in the ears tested in group G2. 76 ears were tested in group G3, and six showed no evidence of dead regions in the cochlea. Conclusions:The TEN test was an effective test to indicate a dead region in the cochlea of subjects with sloping sensorineural hearing loss. There is evidence that pure-tone detection is different for subjects with high frequency sensorineural hearing loss and flat hearing loss;we observed a significant difference between the masked threshold and the absolute threshold only in sloping hearing loss and not for flat hearing loss. The Collaborative Large-scale engineering Analysis Network for Environmental Research (CLEANER) Project Office has been established with funding from the National science Foundation (NSF) to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and a coalition of 11 other institutions. The project office is coordinating the creation of a strategic plan consisting of research, cyberinfrastructure, and education plans that set forth a roadmap for the collaborative engineering analysis network for the study of environmental problems. This report will be completed by July 2007 and requires input from K-12 educators, administrators and other stakeholders in K-12 education. This paper describes the CLEANER project, provides an example of the CLEANER Education Committee's vision for the K-12 area and lists contacts for further information. The intention of this paper is to elicit input from the K-12 engineering education community, including K-12 educators, on how the CLEANER Education Plan could better meet the future needs of K-12 students and educators © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.
