Efficiency comparison of proactive approaches to deal with machine failures*

Due to the innovations brought by Industry 4.0, decision-makers must rethink the premisses and methods used to solve production planning problems. We study short-term production planning and scheduling problems subject to disruptions, incorporating characteristics of Industry 4.0 into the analyzed scenario. We propose and compare two proactive approaches for dealing with machine failures on the shop floor. The methods aim to find sequences with low probabilities of infeasibility at the scheduling level even with the occurrence of disruptions. One proactive approach performs simulations before the resolution of the planning problems to define slacks added to the capacity constraints of the short-term production planning problem. On the other hand, the second approach determines these slacks based on the probability distributions of the failures. According to the experiments, we conclude that the proposed approaches find similar results for most instance sets when comparing the averages and standard deviations. The results indicate that is not necessary to perform simulations before the resolution of the planning problems; a quick analysis of the probability distributions could be used by the decision-maker.

Swarm learning (SL) exploits the blockchain to realize a federated and decentralized learning, which is very suitable for internet of things (IoT). Different from FL using central server to update global parameter, SL using edge node (header) to do that. However, poisoning attack is also an unresolved problem to SL. Because if header is malicious, it can pollute global parameter more easily than edge nodes. Moreover, there are following important limitations in existing defense schemes for FL, which cannot be used in SL directly. First, existing defense schemes focus on building a whitelist, which obstructs the decentralization because it can just provide decentralization in honest nodes instead of all of nodes. Second, existing schemes just consider poisoning attacks from edge nodes, they cannot defend attacks from header. Third, most existing schemes will let server execute the defense algorithm, but in SL, malicious header can return wrong defense results to deceive managers. To address above challenges, in this paper, we propose a protection system that leverages the concept of zero-trust architecture for SL, which achieves continuous risk calculation, analysis of learning behavior and abnormal parameter detection based on Manhattan distance and accuracy difference of parameters. We also evaluate the performance in the presence of random and customized malicious edge nodes. Experimental results demonstrate that our scheme can achieve higher accuracy than the other existing schemes.

Driven by advances in generative artificial intelligence (AI) techniques and algorithms, the widespread adoption of AI-generated content (AIGC) has emerged, allowing for the generation of diverse and high-quality content. Especially, the diffusion model-based AIGC technique has been widely used to generate content in a variety of modalities. However, the real-world implementation of AIGC models, particularly on resource-constrained devices such as mobile phones, introduces significant challenges related to energy consumption and privacy concerns. To further promote the realization of ubiquitous AIGC services, we propose a novel collaborative distributed diffusion-based AIGC framework. By capitalizing on collaboration among devices in wireless networks, the proposed framework facilitates the efficient execution of AIGC tasks, optimizing edge computation resource utilization. Furthermore, we examine the practical implementation of the denoising steps on mobile phones, the impact of the proposed approach on the wireless network-aided AIGC landscape, and the future opportunities associated with its real-world integration. The contributions of this paper not only offer a promising solution to the existing limitations of AIGC services but also pave the way for future research in device collaboration, resource optimization, and the seamless delivery of AIGC services across various devices. This research investigates the feasibility of school-based learning using Virtual Reality technology in Electric Power Generation learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research employs a qualitative approach. Vocational High School Nurul Jadid Paiton Probolinggo is the site of this study. Data was gathered through observation, literature review, and interviews. In the Electrical engineering section, interviews were conducted with a teaching instructor. Triangulation was used to investigate the data's authenticity, in addition to further interviews with the curriculum staff and instructors at the school. The teacher's assessment of learning media using Virtual Reality application technology shows valid criteria with an average value of 3.6. In comparison, after using the Virtual Reality application learning media, the assessment of students obtained an average value of 3.77 compared to conventional assessments with an interval of 2.71. The use of Virtual Reality technology has proven that it can help and facilitate student learning. The use of technologies of Virtual Reality as a means of learning in classrooms will also be an alternate option for virtual laboratories during the COVID-19 pandemic. © 2021 IEEE.

Research has been carried out to monitor vehicle tires before they are used and can reduce damage, including overcoming vehicle fuel waste because air pressure is continuously monitored. This research aims to utilize the MPX5500DP sensor as an air pressure device, the LM35 sensor as a temperature reader, and a buzzer based on IoT to build a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). The MPX5500DP and LM35 sensor inputs to the Arduino Uno microcontroller are distributed by the NodeMCU, fitted with a Wi-Fi module. The Blynk application sends and displays the data on a smartphone using the IoT-based. Based on this research, data on the percentage of errors in monitoring air pressure and tire temperature on vehicles were obtained by comparing the data to the pressure gauge and thermometer: 1—the results of the average reading of the sensor error value. MPX5500DP air pressure against pressure gauge is 5.3%. 2—the average reading of the LM35 sensor error value on the temperature thermometer is 6.8%. With this research, the air pressure and temperature in the tires can be monitored in real-time via a smartphone using the IoT-based.

Chiral exceptional point enhanced active tuning and nonreciprocity in micro-resonators

Exceptional points (EPs) have been extensively explored in mechanical, acoustic, plasmonic, and photonic systems. However, little is known about the role of EPs in tailoring the dynamic tunability of optical devices. A specific type of EPs known as chiral EPs has recently attracted much attention for controlling the flow of light and for building sensors with better responsivity. A recently demonstrated route to chiral EPs via lithographically defined symmetric Mie scatterers on the rim of resonators has not only provided the much-needed mechanical stability for studying chiral EPs, but also helped reduce losses originating from nanofabrication imperfections, facilitating the insitu study of chiral EPs and their contribution to the dynamics and tunability of resonators. Here, we use asymmetric Mie scatterers to break the rotational symmetry of a microresonator, to demonstrate deterministic thermal tuning across a chiral EP, and to demonstrate EP-mediated chiral optical nonlinear response and efficient electro-optic tuning. Our results indicate asymmetric electro-optic modulation with up to 17dB contrast at GHz and CMOS-compatible voltage levels. Such wafer-scale nano-manufacturing of chiral electro-optic modulators and the chiral EP-tailored tunning may facilitate new micro-resonator functionalities in quantum information processing, electromagnetic wave control, and optical interconnects. © 2024, CC BY.

Recently, Metaverse has attracted increasing attention from both industry and academia, because of the significant potential to integrate real and digital worlds ever more seam-lessly. By combining advanced wireless communications, edge computing and virtual reality (VR) technologies into Metaverse, a multidimensional, intelligent and powerful wireless edge Meta-verse is created for future human society. In this paper, we design a privacy preserving targeted advertising strategy for the wireless edge Metaverse. Specifically, a Metaverse service provider (MSP) allocates bandwidth to the VR users so that the users can access Metaverse from edge access points. To protect users' privacy, the covert communication technique is used in the downlink. Then, the MSP can offer high-quality access services to earn more profits. Motivated by the concept of “covert”, targeted advertising is used to promote the sale of bandwidth and ensure that the advertising strategy cannot be detected by competitors who may make counter-offer and by attackers who want to disrupt the services. We derive the best advertising strategy in terms of budget input, with the help of the Vidale-Wolfe model and Hamiltonian function. Furthermore, we propose a novel metric named Meta-Immersion to represent the user's experience feelings. The performance evaluation shows that the MSP can boost its revenue with an optimal targeted advertising strategy, especially compared with that without the advertising.

Background: To evaluate the effect of the weighting of input imaging combo and ADC threshold on the performance of the U-Net and to find an optimized input imaging combo and ADC threshold in segmenting acute ischemic stroke (AIS) lesion. Methods: This study retrospectively enrolled a total of 212 patients having AIS. Four combos, including ADC-ADC-ADC (AAA), DWI-ADC-ADC (DAA), DWI-DWI-ADC (DDA), and DWI-DWI-DWI (DDD), were used as input images, respectively. Three ADC thresholds including 0.6, 0.8 and 1.8 × 10^–3 mm²/s were applied. Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) was used to evaluate the segmentation performance of U-Nets. Nonparametric Kruskal–Wallis test with Tukey–Kramer post-hoc tests were used for comparison. A p <.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The DSC significantly varied among different combos of images and different ADC thresholds. Hybrid U-Nets outperformed uniform U-Nets at ADC thresholds of 0.6 × 10^–3 mm²/s and 0.8 × 10^–3 mm²/s (p <.001). The U-Net with imaging combo of DDD had segmentation performance similar to hybrid U-Nets at an ADC threshold of 1.8 × 10^–3 mm²/s (p =.062 to 1). The U-Net using the imaging combo of DAA at the ADC threshold of 0.6 × 10^–3 mm²/s achieved the highest DSC in the segmentation of AIS lesion. Conclusions: The segmentation performance of U-Net for AIS varies among the input imaging combos and ADC thresholds. The U-Net is optimized by choosing the imaging combo of DAA at an ADC threshold of 0.6 × 10^–3 mm²/s in segmentating AIS lesion with highest DSC. Fuzzy Rule Based Classification Systems (FRBCSs) are widely used tools in classification problems. An important aspect in the design of a FRBCS is the number of fuzzy labels per variable (granularity level), which significantly influences the performance of the fuzzy system. Another relevant issue to be considered when generating a FRBCS is the accuracy-interpretability tradeoff, which can be addressed in the context of multi-objective optimization. Thus, in this work, we propose a new approach to design a FRBCS in which the accuracy and the interpretability (number of rules) of the FRBCS are considered objectives to be treated with the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS).
