Nowadays, applications involving multiple robotic systems connected through a wireless network - to perform tasks together - have an increased research interest. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are excellent tools for evaluating and surveying distributed robotic systems applications due to their flexibility and three-dimensional mobility capability. Cooperative systems composed of multiples UAVs may have a centralized coordination which assists the members of a team to make their decisions in a distributed manner regarding the tasks to be performed. This paper proposes a system composed of embedded hardware and a high-level communication protocol that serves as a basis for identifying, distributing, and allocating tasks in a simple and distributed way to be used by groups of UAVs. The proposal is evaluated in a search and rescue scenario. The setup is configured with two types of UAVs - namely, searchers (search for new tasks) and workers (execution of tasks). Also, a set of nine simulation experiments covering three different setups were performed. Then the proposal is evaluated by two sets of field experiments with real vehicles. The obtained results in the proposed experiments demonstrate that the system can be successfully used in the proposed scenario for task distribution and allocation. © 2021 IEEE.

In this work, we report the second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility χ(2) for epsilon phase Gallium Oxide (ϵ-Ga2O3) thin film on sapphire. ϵ-Ga2O3 exhibits hexagonal P63mc space group symmetry, which is a non-centrosymmetric structure with non-zero second order susceptibility. By focusing a pulsed laser beam on to a polished ϵ-Ga2O3 thin film, we collected the generated second harmonic photons with an ultra-sensitive femtowatt photodetector, obtaining effective second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of χ(2) = 4.89×10-3 pm/V at wavelength of 800 nm. Two different measurement systems collecting reflected and transmitted photons were applied separately to make the result more convincing. The wavelength dependence from 790 nm to 900 nm and polarization dependence from TM mode to TE mode were measured as well. These results will be helpful for the design and fabrication of Ga2O3 based integrated photonics platform in the infrared-visible spectral range. © 2022 IEEE.

Interest in the two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) continues to intensify, driven by their suitable band gaps to supplant silicon as next-generation semiconductor materials. Among various TMDs, tungsten diselenide (WSe2) is renowned for its superior electrical properties in carrier density and mobility under ambient conditions. Despite its notable attributes, the behavior of monolayer WSe2 in the electron-doped regime under cryogenic conditions remains largely uncharted, particularly concerning its magnetotransport properties. In this study, we reveal the transport mechanisms of monolayer WSe2 from high temperatures down to the cryogenic regime. As evident by Efros–Shklovskii variable-range hopping (E-S VRH) in the cryogenic regime, strong Coulomb interactions arise between electrons. Above 8 K, an uncommon nonsaturated quadratic large magnetoresistance (MR) can be explained by the wave-function shrinkage model, which is consistent with the E-S VRH transport mechanism. Notably, the nonsaturated quadratic large MR shows a magnitude up to 1740% at 13 T. These findings underscore the potential applications for monolayer WSe2 in cryogenic field-effect devices, magnetic sensors, and memory devices and mark a significant advance in magnetotransport research.

Immersive learning has gained significant attention with the rising trend of spatial computing, particularly in the after-pandemic era. Numerous research has explored the potential of immersive learning in higher education, primarily on the educational sector. However, prior research has frequently focused too narrowly on the effects of technology and neglected to address the crucial element influencing successful immersive learning in higher education. This study seeks to pinpoint the crucial element contributing to the development of immersive learning experiences. The methodology uses a systematic literature review (SLR) from 2018 up to 2023 to investigate the critical factors of immersive Learning in Higher Education. From the 728 papers initially retrieved, 274 were considered potential candidates, and ultimately, 86 articles were selected based on their relevance to the research question. The results reveal that the critical factors include learning design, technology, immersion, engagement, interactivity, and usability. Academic interests will benefit from this SLR's consequences as institutions create models for designing suitable immersive learning, especially within the context of higher education.

Suitably tailored forms of spatiotemporal modulation in electronic circuit networks have been recently employed to overcome fundamental challenges in modern electronic systems, including breaking reciprocity, squeezing the footprint of high-Q resonators, and overcoming the delay-bandwidth limit. Rotating patterns of temporal modulations have been used to synthesize angular momentum, which replaces magnetic bias to break reciprocity in integrated circuits. However, this approach is limited by trade-offs between modulation speed, footprint, and bandwidth of operation. Rotating switching patterns in commutated capacitor networks also enables compact filters and quasielectrostatic wave propagation, overcoming the delay-bandwidth limit. In this paper, we combine these mechanisms in an integrated-circuit ring that synthetically rotates in two dimensions, realizing an effective helicoidal motion that provides ultrabroadband quasielectrostatic nonreciprocal responses fitting within a theoretically infinitesimal size. We also analyze the impact of modulation signal noise on time-modulated nonreciprocal components and unveil the role of a dynamic noise mechanism based on which the noise level increases in the presence of a strong signal passing through the component, along with methods to mitigate this effect. We experimentally verify these principles in a three-port integrated circulator based on a 65-nm CMOS process that operates from dc to 1 GHz with a miniaturization factor of 2 × 106.

Purpose: The objectives of this study were to create a device with technological development of the self-inflating bag (SIB) equipment to measure the variables tidal volume, peak inspiratory pressure, and inspiratory flow and to evaluate the knowledge of undergraduate students in handling the SIB. To reduce the risks of mortality, length of hospital stay, and infections, SIB is a resource used to ventilate the patient through the inflation of the device, but it is not capable of measuring the ventilatory parameters. Excess ventilation and incorrect handling of the bag can cause lung injury in newborns. Therefore, measuring these parameters can prevent lung injury resulting from inadequate ventilation. Method: This is a cross-sectional and experimental study, with the development of a device SIB that allows the evaluation of variables of neonatal respiratory mechanics that were tested with an artificial lung. It was approved by the Research Ethics Committee and the research was developed in three stages: the first represents the search for scientific articles for the consensus of neonatal ventilatory variables for the construction of the SIB parameters;the second stage depicts the technological development of a device capable of monitoring such variables through the SIB. In the third stage, the content validation of the device with the handling of the SIB was carried out by students of medicine and physiotherapy courses of Brazil. Results: In this work, a device that analyzes the values of the main ventilatory parameters in neonatology was developed and to generate a safety range for the use of the device, curves with a tolerance of 10% up and down were created. All electronic components were coupled to the equipment, with a display that transmits the parameter values. Interpretable ECG Analysis for Myocardial Infarction Detection through Counterfactuals

In the evolving landscape of ECG signal analysis, the challenge of limited transparency in machine learning models remains a significant barrier to their effective integration into clinical practice. This study addresses this issue by investigating the use of counterfactual explanations to improve model interpretability for clinicians, particularly in differentiating healthy subjects from myocardial infarction patients. Utilizing the PTB-XL dataset, we developed a methodology for systematic feature extraction and refinement to prepare for counterfactual analysis. This led to the creation of the Visualizing Counterfactual Clues on Electrocardiograms (VCCE) method, designed to improve the practicality of counterfactual explanations in a clinical setting. The validity of our approach was assessed using custom metrics that reflect the diagnostic relevance of counterfactuals, evaluated with the help of two cardiologists. Our findings suggest that this approach could support future efforts in using ECGs to predict patient outcomes for cardiac conditions, achieving interpretation validity scores of 23.29 ± 1.04 and 20.28 ± 0.99 out of 25 for high and moderate-quality interpretations, respectively. Clinical alignment scores of 0.83 ± 0.12 for high-quality and 0.57 ± 0.10 for moderate-quality interpretations underscore the potential clinical applicability of our method. The methodology and findings of this study contribute to the ongoing discussion on enhancing the interpretability of machine learning models in cardiology, offering a concept that bridges the gap between advanced data analysis techniques and clinical decision-making. Towards Adversarial Robustness for Multi-Mode Data through Metric Learning

Adversarial attacks have become one of the most serious security issues in widely used deep neural networks. Even though real-world datasets usually have large intra-variations or multiple modes, most adversarial defense methods, such as adversarial training, which is currently one of the most effective defense methods, mainly focus on the single-mode setting and thus fail to capture the full data representation to defend against adversarial attacks. To confront this challenge, we propose a novel multi-prototype metric learning regularization for adversarial training which can effectively enhance the defense capability of adversarial training by preventing the latent representation of the adversarial example changing a lot from its clean one. With extensive experiments on CIFAR10, CIFAR100, MNIST, and Tiny ImageNet, the evaluation results show the proposed method improves the performance of different state-of-the-art adversarial training methods without additional computational cost. Furthermore, besides Tiny ImageNet, in the multi-prototype CIFAR10 and CIFAR100 where we reorganize the whole datasets of CIFAR10 and CIFAR100 into two and ten classes, respectively, the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art approach by 2.22% and 1.65%, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed multi-prototype method also outperforms its single-prototype version and other commonly used deep metric learning approaches as regularization for adversarial training and thus further demonstrates its effectiveness. © 2023 by the authors.

Near-Optimal Pilot Assignment in Cell-Free Massive MIMO

Cell-free massive MIMO systems are currently being considered as potential enablers of future (6G) technologies for wireless communications. By combining distributed processing and massive MIMO, they are expected to deliver improved user coverage and efficiency. A possible source of performance degradation in such systems is pilot contamination, which contributes to causing interference during uplink training and affects channel estimation negatively. Contamination occurs when the same pilot sequence is assigned to more than one user. This is in general inevitable, as the number of mutually orthogonal pilot sequences corresponds to only a fraction of the coherence interval. We introduce a new algorithm for pilot assignment and analyze its performance both from a theoretical perspective and in computational experiments. We show that it has an approximation ratio close to 1 for a plausibly large number of orthogonal pilot sequences, as well as low computational complexity under massive parallelism. We also show that, on average, it outperforms other methods in terms of per-user SINR and throughput on the uplink. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
