In this paper, we present and study the dynamics of an active microwave cloaking technique that alleviates the trade-offs between loss, bandwidth, and size inherent in passive approaches. The presented cloak consists of a finite number of satellite antennas loaded with parity-time-symmetric lumped admittances, which, without external control, can track in real time the amplitude, frequency, and phase variations of the impinging signals and generate the required current distributions at the antennas to totally suppress the scattered waves, including reflections and shadows. We analytically derive the optimal density and frequency dispersion of the antenna satellites surrounding the object in order to achieve substantial reduction in the scattering crosssection over a wide bandwidth. We also investigate the conditions necessary to maintain the cloak stability and study its transient response for excitation with pulsed signals.

The formation of resonant photonic structures in porous silicon leverages the benefit of high surface area for improved molecular capture that is characteristic of porous materials with the advantage of high detection sensitivity that is a feature of resonant optical devices. This review provides an overview of the biosensing capabilities of a variety of resonant porous silicon photonic structures including microcavities, Bloch surface waves, ring resonators, and annular Bragg resonators. Detection sensitivities > 1000 nm/RIU are achieved for small molecule detection. The challenge of detecting molecules that approach and exceed the pore diameter is also addressed. © 2017 SPIE.

In this research, the transient characteristics of a new type fuel metering system for aircraft turbofan engines using two types of pumps, a gear pump and a centrifugal pump, were studied by modelling and simulation. This new fuel metering system is capable of hydraulically unloading the operating state of each pump by the pump mode switching mechanism within the permissible range of the pump rotation speed and the fuel flow rate and it is possible to reduce the fuel temperature rise due to the pressure loss in the circuit in the operation region of the entire fuel system. In addition to this, by using a small centrifugal pump that can realize high discharge flow rate, it is possible to reduce weight compared to the conventional fuel system. However, when the pump mode is switched, unexpected fluctuation in the fuel flow rate can occur when a large change in the inlet pressure of the system occurs, the pressure control unit cannot follow the change, and the transient phenomenon cannot be suppressed. At this time, the pressure waveform generated at the time of changing the pump mode includes a high frequency component such that the pressure control unit, which plays a role of keeping the metering valve differential pressure constant, cannot follow up. Therefore, in this paper, we focused on the frequency of the pressure change waveform when the pump mode was changed and studied the model of the fuel system inlet pressure in the gear pump mode. Based on that model, we propose a method to reduce the frequency characteristics of the pressure change occurring at the time of pump mode change.

SummaryBackgroundAcross low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), one in ten deaths in children younger than 5 years is attributable to diarrhoea. The substantial between-country variation in both diarrhoea incidence and mortality is attributable to interventions that protect children, prevent infection, and treat disease. Identifying subnational regions with the highest burden and mapping associated risk factors can aid in reducing preventable childhood diarrhoea. MethodsWe used Bayesian model-based geostatistics and a geolocated dataset comprising 15 072 746 children younger than 5 years from 466 surveys in 94 LMICs, in combination with findings of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017, to estimate posterior distributions of diarrhoea prevalence, incidence, and mortality from 2000 to 2017. From these data, we estimated the burden of diarrhoea at varying subnational levels (termed units) by spatially aggregating draws, and we investigated the drivers of subnational patterns by creating aggregated risk factor estimates. FindingsThe greatest declines in diarrhoeal mortality were seen in south and southeast Asia and South America, where 54·0% (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 38·1–65·8), 17·4% (7·7–28·4), and 59·5% (34·2–86·9) of units, respectively, recorded decreases in deaths from diarrhoea greater than 10%. Although children in much of Africa remain at high risk of death due to diarrhoea, regions with the most deaths were outside Africa, with the highest mortality units located in Pakistan. Indonesia showed the greatest within-country geographical inequality; some regions had mortality rates nearly four times the average country rate. Reductions in mortality were correlated to improvements in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) or reductions in child growth failure (CGF). WAN Optimization to Speed up Data Transfer

Currently the development of digital technology has advanced very rapidly, as well as data storage and data transfer. As the development of information technology and the use of data that increasingly large, it will be a main factor that affects to the company’s business. The amount of data that must be processed both at headquarters and other branch offices make the process of data exchange become the main issue in term of speed and delay. Due to data exchange being a top priority in the company, often the WAN network bandwidth used by the file system, email system, proxy, web system becomes peak or full during peak hours thus slowing down accessing file or email system. One method to reduce bandwidth usage is almost full is to use WAN Optimization tools. WAN Optimization has several functions, including Data Streamlining, Transport Streamlining, and Application Streamlining. The purpose of this study is to analyze performance network when WAN optimization was applied in the system. Data is taken from simulated file transfers conducted several days and at different hours. Data were analyzed using Wireshark tools and calculation formula. The results can be seen if there is a significant increasing performance, delay become better from 287 ms to 0.604 ms for file size 93 MB and jitter increased 12.4% better. It can be concluded that with the optimization of WAN, the process of data transfer becomes more efficient both in bandwidth and time during working hours.

Restricted Boltzmann machine to determine the input weights for extreme learning machines

The Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) is a single-hidden layer feedforward neural network (SLFN) learning algorithm that can learn effectively and quickly. The ELM training phase assigns the input weights and bias randomly and do not change them in the whole process. Although the network works well, the random weights in the input layer can make the algorithm less effective and impact on its performance. Therefore, we propose a new approach to determine the input weights and bias for the ELM using the restricted Boltzmann machine (RBM), which we call RBM-ELM. We compare our new approach with a well-known approach to improve the ELM and a state of the art algorithm to select the weights for the ELM. The results show that the RBM-ELM outperforms both methodologies and achieve a better performance than the ELM. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Faults in industrial communication protocols represent an important problem for industrial systems as they may lead to severe losses. Observing the need for approaches to deal with this type of problem, this paper studies reliability aspects related to industrial communication protocols and the modeling of possible communication faults. The work proposes a requirements specification based on aspect-oriented concepts to map and model common faults in design phases of embedded systems. A model integrating fault modeling in communication protocols extending the Real-Time From Requirements to Design using Aspects (RT-FRIDA) framework is presented. A case study on vehicular networks was conducted considering the nonfunctional requirements specification of an Active Suspension System. Then, a sequence of fault requirements based in recent studies is modeled and presented to validate the proposed approach. The main contribution of this work is to enable the use of fault modeling in communication protocols and aspect-oriented modeling techniques to mitigate the fault impact in the timing behavior of critical tasks. This study indicates the use of observers' technique modeled to fault diagnosis, so that they can be aggregated into a real-time control system. © 2017 IEEE.

This work deals with the Unrelated Parallel Machine Scheduling Problem with Setup Times, with the objective of minimizing the makespan. It is proposed an Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search (ALNS) metaheuristic using Learning Automata (LA) to adapt the probabilities of using removal and insertion heuristics and methods. A computable function in the LA updates the probability vector for selecting the actions, corresponding to six removal and six insertion methods. We also propose a new insertion method based on Hungarian algorithm, which is applied to solve subproblems optimally. Computational experiments are performed to verify the performance of the proposed method. A set of instances available in the literature with problems up to 150 jobs and 10 machines is employed in the experiments. The proposed LA-ALNS is compared against three other algorithms from the literature. The results suggest that our algorithm has better performance in most of cases (88%) under the defined conditions of experiments. Statistical tests also suggest that LA-ALNS is better than the other algorithms from the literature. The proposed method is able to automatically choose the most suitable heuristics for the instance of the problem, through adaptation and learning in the Learning Automata. © 2017 IEEE.

Traditional disease surveillance systems depend on outpatient reporting and virological test results released by hospitals. These data have valid and accurate information about emerging outbreaks but it's often not timely. In recent years the exponential growth of users getting connected to social media provides immense knowledge about epidemics by sharing related information. Social media can now flag more immediate concerns related to outbreaks in real time. In this paper we apply the long short-term memory recurrent neural network (RNN) architecture to classify tweets conveyed influenza-related information and compare its performance with baseline algorithms including support vector machine (SVM), decision tree, naive Bayes, simple logistics, and naive Bayes multinomial. The developed RNN model achieved an F-score of 0.845 on the MedWeb task test set, which outperforms the F-score of SVM without applying the synthetic minority oversampling technique by 0.08. The F-score of the RNN model is within 1% of the highest score achieved by SVM with oversampling technique. © 2017 AFNLP
