The next phase of LHC Operations – High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), which is aimed at ten-fold increase in the luminosity of proton-proton collisions at the energy of 14 TeV, is expected to start operation in 2027-2028 and will deliver an unprecedented scientific data volume of multi-exabyte scale. This amount of data has to be stored and the corresponding storage system should ensure fast and reliable data delivery for processing by scientific groups distributed all over the world. The present LHC computing and data processing model will not be able to provide the required infrastructure growth even taking into account the expected hardware technology evolution. To address this challenge the new state-of-the-art computing infrastructure technologies are now being developed and are presented here. The possibilities of application of the HL-LHC distributed data handling technique for other particle and astro-particle physics experiments dealing with large-scale data volumes like DUNE, LSST, Belle-II, JUNO, SKAO etc. are also discussed.

A hybrid simulation for singularly perturbed system of two-point reaction-diffusion boundary-value problems

This study concerns with singularly perturbed systems of second-order reaction-diffusion equations in ODE's. To handle this type of problems, a numerical-asymptotic hybrid method is employed. In this hybrid method, an efficient asymptotic method, the so-called Successive complementary expansion method (SCEM) is applied first and then, a numerical method based on finite differences is proposed to approximate the solution of the corresponding singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion systems. Two illustrative examples are provided to show the efficiency and easy-applicability of the present method with convergence properties. 65L10, 65L11 Copyright © 2017, The Authors. This paper focuses on the latest version of a tool developed within the department to guide developer through the various steps of requirements, test-procedures and documentations to finally download the derived algorithm on a safety programmable logic controller (PLC). Requirements on how to develop and how to test software are steadily increasing due to international standards, which have to be obeyed in industries in general, and in the process- and automation industries in particular. A simple model is derived to be used to develop a PI controller that has to pass several steps to be qualified for execution on a PLC. The paper explains the different steps and describes the various problems that might occur. © 2016

Kalman filters (KFs) are popular methods to estimate position information from a set of time-of-flight (ToF) values in radio frequency (RF)-based locating systems. Such filters are proven to be optimal under zero-mean Gaussian error distributions. In presence of multipath propagation ToF measurement errors drift due to small-scale motion. This results in changing phases of the multipath components (MPCs) which cause a drift on the ToF measurements. Thus, on a short-term scale the ToF measurements have a non-constant bias that changes while moving. KFs cannot distinguish between the drifting measurement errors and the true motion of the tracked object. Hence, very rigid motion models have to be used for the KF which commonly causes the filters to diverge. Therefore, the KF cannot resolve the short-term errors of consecutive measurements and the long-term motion of the tracked object. This paper presents a data-driven approach that uses training sequences to derive a near-optimal position estimator. A Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) learns to interpret drifting errors in ToF measurements of a tracked dynamic object directly from raw ToF data. Our evaluation shows that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art KFs on both synthetically generated and real-world dynamic motion trajectories that include drifting ToF measurement errors.

Formation of the platelet plug represents a primary response to the vessel wall injury, but may also result in vessel occlusion. The decrease of the local blood flow due to platelet thrombus formation may lead to serious complications, such as ischemic stroke and myocardial infarction. However, mechanisms responsible for regulation of thrombus dynamics are not clear. In order to get a deeper insight into the role of blood flow and platelet interactions in the formation of the primary platelet plug we developed a particle-based model of microvascular thrombosis using quasisteady flow approximation. In order to simulate thrombus dynamics at physiologically relevant timescales of several minutes, we took advantage of the supercomputer technologies. Our in silico analysis revealed the importance of platelet size heterogeneity for describing experimental data on microvascular thrombus formation. Thus, our model represents a useful tool for the supercomputeraided computational analysis of thrombus dynamics in the microvessels on physiologically relevant timescales. © The Author 2018.

Modular Fault Diagnosis in Fixed-Block Railway Signaling Systems

The diagnosis of possible faults in railway signaling systems is an important issue to provide safe travel and transportation in railways. Signaling system designers have to consider the possible faults which may occur in railway field components both on the requirements preparation phase and on the development phase of the signaling system software or namely, the interlocking system. Although the diagnosis of different unobservable faults is relatively hard, especially for large scale railway fields, this complexity can be overcome by using the Discrete Event System (DES) based modular diagnosis approach which is explained in this paper. The main advantage of using such modular approach for fault diagnosis in fixed-block signaling systems is the inspection of the diagnosability of the whole system with respect to its subsystems (railway field components). In this study, the diagnosability of the railway field equipment and the whole system is also explained with a case study. © 2016

In this paper, a Multi-Choice Stochastic Bi-Level programming Problem (MCSBLPP) is considered where all the parameters of constraints are followed by normal distribution. The cost coefficients of the objective functions are multi-choice types. At first, all the probabilistic constraints are transformed into deterministic constraints using stochastic programming approach. Further, a general transformation technique with the help of binary variables is used to transform the multi-choice type cost coefficients of the objective functions of Decision Makers(DMs). Then the transformed problem is considered as a deterministic multi-choice bi-level programming problem. Finally, a numerical example is presented to illustrate the usefulness of the paper. © 2016, The Author(s).

In this paper application of the OpenFOAM solver QGDFoam for numerical simulation of transonic viscous flows is considered. The developed solver, which implements regularized or quasi- gas dynamics (QGD) algorithms, is validated using the transonic low-Re jet flow case (Ma=0.9, Re=3600). The conducted numerical simulations allow the assessing applicability of the solver for modelling hydrodynamic instabilities and their interaction with transonic flow. Results of the numerical simulations are compared with experimental observations and Navier-Stokes-based code simulation. Results of the present study formulate a guideline for choosing (values of) QGD-algorithm tuning parameters.

Maternal treatment with dexamethasone during lactation delays male puberty and disrupts reproductive functions via hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis alterations

The effects of maternal treatment with dexamethasone during lactation on pubertal timing, serum hormonal profile and sperm indices in the male offspring were assessed. Twenty lactating dams were divided into 4 groups (n = 5). Group 1 was administered subcutaneously 0.02 ml/100 g/day normal saline at lactation days 1-21. Groups 2-4 were administered subcutaneously 100 μg/kg/day dexamethasone (Dex) at lactation days 1-7, 1-14, and 1-21 respectively. Results showed that there was significant reduction in serum testosterone in the DexLD 1-7 (p < 0.05), DexLD 1-14 (p < 0.01) and DexLD 1-21 (p < 0.001) relative to control. In addition there was a significant reduction in serum FSH and LH in the DexLD 1-7 (p < 0.01), DexLD 1-14 (p < 0.001) and DexLD 1-21 (p < 0.001) when compared with the control. Treatment with dexamethasone during lactation significantly increased the days of preputial separation in the DexLD 1-7 (p < 0.05), DexLD 1-14 (p < 0.05) and DexLD 1-21 (p < 0.001) relative to control. Maternal treatment with dexamethasone throughout lactation period also significantly reduced sperm counts (p < 0.001), motility (p < 0.01) and increased percentage abnormal sperm (p < 0.001) in the offspring when compared with the control. In conclusion, maternal treatment with dexamethasone during lactation may induce delayed puberty and disrupt reproductive functions by altering activities at hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis in the male offspring. © 2015 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.
