The development of pervasive healthcare systems in the automotive industry is enabled by unobtrusive acquisition systems for recording vital parameters of drivers and developed ML algorithms for driver health services. The paper proposes a pervasive system based on the acquisition of the cECG signal recorded through clothing during driving, the transmission of the cECG to the local device for processing cECG and extraction of cECG parameters, and the extracted parameters transmission via vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication channel to the cloud. The potential of cyber security risk in implementing the proposed system is identified.

The forthcoming era of massive drone delivery deployment in urban environments raises a need to develop reliable control and monitoring systems. While active solutions, i.e., wireless sharing of a real-time location between air traffic participants and control units, are of use, developing additional security layers is appealing. Among various surveillance systems, radars offer distinct advantages by operating effectively in harsh weather conditions and providing high-resolution reliable detection over extended ranges. However, contrary to traditional airborne targets, small drones and copters pose a significant problem for radar systems due to their relatively small radar cross-sections. Here, we propose an efficient approach to label drones by attaching passive resonant scatterers to their rotor blades. While blades themselves generate micro-Doppler rotor-specific signatures, those are typically hard to capture at large distances owing to small signal-to-noise ratios in radar echoes. Furthermore, drones from the same vendor are indistinguishable by their micro-Doppler signatures. Here we demonstrate that equipping the blades with multiple resonant scatterers not only extends the drone detection range but also assigns it a unique micro-Doppler encoded identifier. By extrapolating the results of our laboratory and outdoor experiments to real high-grade radar surveillance systems, we estimate that the clear-sky identification range for a small drone is approximately 3-5 kilometers, whereas it would be barely detectable at 1000 meters if not labeled. This performance places the proposed passive system on par with its active counterparts, offering the clear benefits of reliability and resistance to jamming. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

The objective of the present paper is the definition of an optimization model for the design of a smart energy infrastructure that integrates photovoltaic fields, electrical storage systems, loads and electric mobility. The optimization model is solved in order to minimize the costs related to the installation and maintenance of power plants, storage systems and electric vehicle charging stations and the costs due to the energy exchanges with the public grid which the district is connected to. The focus is pointed on the possibility to combine the most innovative smart mobility systems, such as electric vehicles and related charging stations, also of vehicle-to-grid type, with renewable energy and storage systems. © 2018

The aim of this paper is to propose a MPC (Model Predictive Control)-based hierarchical architecture for microgrids characterized by photovoltaics and storage systems. The first part of the work is focused on the storage model's identification during the charge and discharge phases with the aim of defining appropriate constraints to be inserted in the decision model. In the higher level, an optimization problem is developed and solved under a MPC scheme. The lower level, implemented on a PLC, receives references from the higher level and applies simple heuristics rules for real time control, on the basis of weather forecasts and data measured in real time. The developed algorithms have been applied to a real case study: a portion of the Savona Campus (University of Genoa) polygeneration microgrid that includes a photovoltaic field, an electric storage system, a load, and a connection with the electric grid. © 2017 IEEE.

This paper considers the problem of signal detection in non-Gaussian noise. We propose the novel moment quality criterion decision making, where the moment's description of a random process is used for synthesis of polynomial decision rules. It is shown that the nonlinear processing of samples and taking into account higher order statistics of random process can increase the efficiency of signal detection. It is shown that the proposed models and methods allow us to increase the efficiency of signal processing in comparison with the known results. © 2018 IEEE.

The objective of the present paper is the definition of an optimization model for the upgrade of a smart energy infrastructure, which involves photovoltaic fields, electrical storage systems, loads and integrates new electric mobility services such as e-buses and electric car sharing services. The optimization model is solved in order to minimize the costs related to the installation and maintenance of the considered technologies and the costs due to the energy exchange with the public grid which the district is connected to, while maximizing the revenues from the mobility services. The real case study of Savona Campus, in Italy, is analyzed, where data about the mobility demand have been collected through a survey, specifically devised for the Campus users. Technical results are reported and discussed in the paper, together with some economic considerations. © 2019 IEEE.

A bi-level Energy Management System (EMS) is here proposed for the day ahead schedule and real-time optimal control of microgrids. The upper-level optimization problem (UDP) takes into account active and reactive power flows and a detailed formalization of the system model, with the aim of minimizing costs and emissions. For the lower level decision problem (LDP), the optimal results of the UDP are taken as reference values for the plant's schedule, which can be slightly modified in real time due to the actual values of renewables and energy demands. An analytical solution for the LDP has been found, which allows a fast and simple implementation of the microgrid's schedule. © 2018

In this paper we propose the technique for SEFDM modification assuming that the conventional SEFDM is a particular type of partial response signals obtained from OFDM by a denser allocation of subcarriers. Primarily, we propose a utilization of optimal pulses as shapes for subcarriers spectrums;the pulse optimization is based on the criterion of the maximal free Euclidean distance. The optimization technique was originally described for single-carrier partial response signals, hence, we use the term PR-SEFDM to distinguish proposed signals from the sinc-SEFDM. We also suggest a generation and detection algorithms for PR-SEFDM operating in frequency domain as it is usually done for OFDM. The proposed approach implies the utilization of the Viterbi algorithm for demodulation. Thus, it becomes possible to process SEFDM signals with a large number of subcarriers. In this work, we analyze the PR-SEFDM mode with controlled ISI covering eight neighboring subcarriers. It has been shown that the PR-SEFDM provides a lower bandwidth consumption with respect to the sinc-SEFDM under a fixed energy consumption and fixed computational complexity of the detection algorithm. © 2017 IEEE.

Within the scope of the paper, electromechanical and thermodynamic models are derived for a series elastic actuator and open loop and closed loop torque bandwidth parameters are analysed considering the thermodynamic behaviour of the actuator. It was observed that the closed loop torque bandwidth of the electromechanical subsystem of the actuator was not accessible in the entire torque reference amplitude range due to thermodynamic limitations. Therefore, a stator winding temperature estimation based adaptive controller is utilised and analysed to improve the accessibility of the controller based torque bandwidth. This paper implements the methodology on a HEBI robotics X5-9 actuator as a case study. © 2020 Australasian robotics and Automation Association. All rights reserved.
