Mangrove trees influence their physical environment by exerting drag on tidal flows and waves while also stabilising the sediment bed of intertidal flats. These processes influence sediment accretion, the mangrove habitat and their resilience to sea level rise. However, little is known about the magnitude and spatial extent of the effects of mangrove forests on sediment transport and the morphology of the intertidal flat. We use manipulated simulations with an extended process-based numerical model, to study the influence of mangrove forests on intertidal flat morphology on a yearly timescale. The model includes the influence of mangrove trees on tidal flows, waves and sediment dynamics. The model is calibrated and validated with a comprehensive set of measurement data including hydrodynamics, sediment transport and morphological processes from an expanding mangrove forest in the sediment-rich Firth of Thames estuary in Aotearoa New *** accretion on the upper intertidal flat is predominantly influenced by the characteristic morphology of the established mangrove forest, with increased bed stability at higher mudflat elevations related to prolonged aerial exposure and drying of the bed. Our results show that, in comparison to the situation without mangroves, sediment accretion increases in the most seaward fringe area of the forest. The unvegetated intertidal flat fronting the mangrove forest captures less sediment compared to the situation without mangroves. The mangrove forest drag triggers the development of a steeper, convex-up-shaped, upper intertidal flat profile, especially during periods with higher water levels and waves. These effects are expected to influence the development and storm-recovery of natural and restored mangrove forests and may contribute to the resilience and persistence of mangrove-vegetated intertidal flats for coastal flood risk reduction.

For Japan, one of the world's leading "disaster-prone countries," measures are required to reduce or prevent damage caused by disasters as much as possible to ensure the people's safe and secure lives. As a measure of that, developing a solid transportation infrastructure and a lifeline is indispensable. Against this background, this paper considers road-slanting surface countermeasures that assess the soundness of lifelines often constructed along roads, using the mountainous areas of Kochi Prefecture as a model. On that basis, we proposed a new "rock-fall countermeasure construction method" (from now on referred to as "ORN method") that is effective and highly versatile in preventing road slope collapse and rock-fall events. Specifically, we planned to increase the space between props so that it could be applied to valley-shaped slopes and to strengthen the potential absorbed energy by adding reinforcing ropes. In addition, the outline and design calculation results of this ORN construction method were presented, structural rationality was explained through the consequences of full-scale model experiments, and the effect of improving regional disaster prevention resilience by adopting the construction method was also mentioned ©2023 The Society of Materials Science, Japan.

Advanced oxidation process (AOPs) based on persulfate activation has been considered as a proven and effective means of rapidly removing organic pollutants from sewage. However, the low efficiency of heterogeneous catalysts still hinders its widespread application. Herein, FeWO4 synthesized by solvothermal method in different water/alcohol mixed solvents is employed to photocatalytically activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for antibiotics degradation. Due to differences in solvent polarity, dissolution kinetics and physicochemical properties of different alcohols (ethanol, ethylene glycol, glycerol), the morphology, specific surface area, pore structure, photoelectric properties, band gap structure, and consequently the photocatalytic activity of FeWO4 are significantly affected. It is found that as the alcoholic hydroxyl groups increase, the FeWO4 morphology gradually changes from nanorods to rice-grain-like nanoparticles, accompanied by an increase in specific surface-area and pores, an extension of the reaction-interface and light-absorption area, and an exposure of more active sites. Among them, FeWO4 (DZ:GI = 2:8), synthesized in a deionized water/glycerol mixed solvent with a volume ratio of 2:8, exhibits the highest photocatalytic activity for activating PMS. Within 15 min, the removal rate of tetracycline (TC) in the FeWO4 (DZ:GI = 2:8)/PMS/light system reaches 100 %. Free radical trapping experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra confirm that oxygen singlet (1O2) has a key role in TC degradation. Whereas hydroxyl radicals (•OH), holes (h+), superoxide radicals (•O2–), and sulfate radicals (SO4•−) play only a minor role. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Humans rely increasingly on sensors to address grand challenges and to improve quality of life in the era of digitalization and big data. For ubiquitous sensing, flexible sensors are developed to overcome the limitations of conventional rigid counterparts. Despite rapid advancement in bench-side research over the last decade, the market adoption of flexible sensors remains limited. To ease and to expedite their deployment, here, we identify bottlenecks hindering the maturation of flexible sensors and propose promising solutions. We first analyze continued...challenges in achieving satisfactory sensing performance for real-world applications and then summarize issues in compatible sensor-biology interfaces, followed by brief discussions on powering and connecting sensor networks. Issues en route to commercialization and for sustainable growth of the sector are also analyzed, highlighting environmental concerns and emphasizing nontechnical issues such as business, regulatory, and ethical considerations. Additionally, we look at future intelligent flexible sensors. In proposing a comprehensive roadmap, we hope to steer research efforts towards common goals and to guide coordinated development strategies from disparate communities. Through such collaborative

A Conditional Perspective on the Logic of Iterated Belief Contraction

Classical AGM belief change theory provides only limited information on how to deal with iterative belief revision, leading to the question of how appropriate iteration principles look alike. The contributions to the interconnection between iterative belief revision and conditional beliefs lead to fundamental insights on that matter. Besides of clarifying to what amount iterated revision should respect conditional beliefs, these investigations identified several principles for iterated revision that are today widely accepted by the belief change community and beyond. Specifically, due to the seminal work by Darwiche and Pearl, it is standard, that principles for iterated revision and change of conditional beliefs are considered as two sides of the same coin. However, for iterated contraction the situation is different, there are only a small amount of iteration principles present in the literature. Moreover, for none of these iterated principles for contraction, there is a known equivalent formulation in terms of change of conditional beliefs. In this article, we consider iteration principles for contraction, with the goal of identifying properties for contractions that respect conditional beliefs. Therefore, we investigate and evaluate four groups of iteration principles for contraction which consider the dynamics of conditional beliefs. For all these principles, we provide semantic characterization theorems and provide formulations by postulates which highlight how the change of beliefs and of conditional beliefs is constrained, whenever that is possible. The first group is similar to the syntactic Darwiche-Pearl postulates. As a second group, we consider semantic postulates for iteration of contraction by Chopra, Ghose, Meyer and Wong, and by Konieczny and Pino Pérez, respectively, and we provide novel syntactic counterparts. Filter-decomposition-based group equivariant convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have shown promising stability and data efficiency for 3D image feature extraction. However, these networks, which rely on parameter sharing and discrete transformation groups, often underperform in modern deep neural network architectures for processing volumetric images, such as the common 3D medical images. To address these limitations, this paper presents an efficient non-parameter-sharing continuous 3D affine group equivariant neural network for volumetric images. This network uses an adaptive aggregation of Monte Carlo augmented spherical Fourier-Bessel filter bases to improve the efficiency and flexibility of 3D group equivariant CNNs for volumetric data. Unlike existing methods that focus only on angular orthogonality in filter bases, the introduced spherical Bessel Fourier filter base incorporates both angular and radial orthogonality to improve feature extraction. Experiments on four medical image segmentation datasets show that the proposed methods achieve better affine group equivariance and superior segmentation accuracy than existing 3D group equivariant convolutional neural network layers, significantly improving the training stability and data efficiency of conventional CNN layers (at 0.05 significance level). To comprehend complex systems with multiple states, it is imperative to reveal the identity of these states by system outputs. Nevertheless, the mathematical models describing these systems often exhibit nonlinearity so that render the resolution of the parameter inverse problem from the observed spatiotemporal data a challenging endeavor. Starting from the observed data obtained from such systems, we propose a novel framework that facilitates the investigation of parameter identification for multi-state systems governed by spatiotemporal varying parametric partial differential equations. Our framework consists of two integral components: a constrained self-adaptive physics-informed neural network, encompassing a sub-network, as our methodology for parameter identification, and a finite mixture model approach to detect regions of probable parameter variations. Through our scheme, we can precisely ascertain the unknown varying parameters of the complex multi-state system, thereby accomplishing the inversion of the varying parameters. Furthermore, we have showcased the efficacy of our framework on two numerical cases: the 1D Burgers’ equation with time-varying parameters and the 2D wave equation with a space-varying parameter.
