In this paper, a new texture feature set based on M-band wavelet analysis is proposed for online palmprint identification. First, the central part of a palm was decomposed by M-band wavelets transformation, then, l-norm energy was extracted out as our features, at last, the candidate was found by matching process. This paper presents a novel approach to recognize images based on nonlinear wavelet approximation. The mathematical theory on nonlinear wavelet approximation is introduced, which shows that nonlinear approximation contains much more information of the original image than linear approximation. Based on this theory, a scheme to obtain the basic information of images with less data is provided. Experiments on face recognition produce effective matching rates.

In this paper we present an application of the nonlinear wavelet approximation to recognize faces. The advantages of the nonlinear wavelet approximation are compared with its linear counterpart. An efficient scheme in applying the nonlinear wavelet transform to face recognition is presented. Experiments using the Yale Face Library show very encouraging recognition results and demonstrate that this method has the desirable property of being insensitive to facial expressions.

The refinability and approximation order of finite element multi-scale vector are discussed in [1]. But the coefficients in the conditions of approximation order of finite element multi-scale vector are incorrect there. The main purpose of this note is to make a correction of the error in the main result of [1]. These Cuefficients are very important for the properties of wavelets, such as vanishing moments and regularity.
