The emergence and increase of antimicrobial multidrug resistance (AMR) is a demographic and economic problem for current health systems. AMR is particularly problematic in clinical units such as the intensive care unit (ICU), where the risk of infection is high, principally due to the extensive use of antimicrobials and invasive devices. In this work, we propose the use of different temporal feature selection and classification approaches to ascertain the most informative features and extract knowledge for characterizing AMR in the ICU. For this purpose, a set of demographic and temporal features such as antibiotics taken daily by the patient and the use of mechanical ventilation are considered. According to the results obtained in this work, it could be concluded that temporal features such as mecanic ventilation provide powerful insights to predict AMR in ICU. This work presents the design of a passive reflectarray-based Intelligent Reflective Surface (IRS) to improve the coverage in a 5G scenario at 28 GHz. The IRS generates a wide beam in azimuth with a narrow beam in elevation, using a Phase-Only Synthesis with the Intersection Approach to design it. The resulting phase-shift distribution radiates a field pattern that covers an angular range of 12.75° and 2° in azimuth and elevation. Due to the IRS is placed on a building face, the surrender wall effect is analyzed. Different building materials are electromagnetically characterized in the Ka-band. Then, the effect of the wall is included in the radiated field. The results clearly demonstrate that the wall produces a strong reflection on the specular direction, deeply affecting the coverage. These preliminary results show the importance of including the wall in the design process.

Chatbots and messaging platforms in the classroom: An analysis from the teacher's perspective

Introducing new technologies such as messaging platforms, and the chatbots attached to them, in higher education, is rapidly growing. This introduction entails a careful consideration of the potential opportunities and/or challenges of adopting these tools. Hence, a thorough examination of the teachers' experiences in this discipline can shed light on the effective ways of enhancing students' learning and boosting their progress. In this contribution, we have surveyed the opinions of tertiary education teachers based in Spain (mainly) and Spanish-speaking countries. The focus of these surveys is to collect teachers' feedback about their opinions regarding the introduction of the messaging platforms and chatbots in their classes, understand their needs and to gather information about the various educational use cases where these tools are valuable. In addition, an analysis of how and when teachers' opinions towards the use of these tools can vary across gender, experience, and their discipline of specialisation is presented. The key findings of this study highlight the factors that can contribute to the advancement of the adoption of messaging platforms and chatbots in higher education institutions to achieve the desired learning outcomes. © 2022, CC BY-SA.

In this paper, we exploit the extra degrees of freedom associated with including time as a design variable to create communication scenarios beyond the physical bounds of passive structures. We particularize the results to a time-modulated diffractive one-dimensional grating. By tuning the temporal modulation, we show that two different scenarios can lead to the same output angles but with different output frequencies or incidence angles. These results illustrate the potential of these metastructures as diffractive beamformers and frequency mixers.

This contribution proposes a simulation framework for quantifying the performance of employed reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) based systems to overcome adverse propagation-related effects. The physical model underlying the proposed framework considers the presence of a dominant signal path between the source and RIS, and then between RIS and the destination. The simulation of the time-correlated scattered signal reflected by the illuminated reflective elements is achieved using autoregressive (AR) modeling. As a by-product of our analysis, significant insights are developed which allow for the characterization of the amplitude and phase properties of the received signal, and the associated complex autocorrelation function (ACF) for the product of two Rician channels. Capitalizing on this, we derive the corresponding first and second order statistics, which lead to the development of useful theoretical and practical insights.

This work introduces a theoretical framework to develop fully-analytical and multi-modal equivalent circuits that are applicable to spatiotemporal metasurfaces. Here, time is considered a periodic variable. Thus, classical models for purely spatial structures are generalized to cover space-time scenarios. This paper explores various periodic metastructures from a circuital perspective, considering just time periodicity or space-time periodicities. The performance of the analytical equivalent circuits is validated through an external FDTD code. The results suggest that our analytical model is a powerful tool to describe and design novel and advanced space-time microwave and photonic systems.

Although user authentication has been well explored, device-to-device authentication - specifically in Bluetooth networks - has not seen the same attention. We propose Verification of Interaction Authenticity (VIA) - a recurring authentication scheme based on evaluating characteristics of the communications (interactions) between devices. We adapt techniques from wireless traffic analysis and intrusion-detection systems to develop behavioral models that capture typical, authentic device interactions (behavior);these models enable recurring verification of device behavior. To evaluate our approach we produced a new dataset consisting of more than 300 Bluetooth network traces collected from 20 Bluetooth-enabled smart-health and smart-home devices. In our evaluation, we found that devices can be correctly verified at a variety of granularities, achieving an F1-score of 0.86 or better in most cases. © 2021 ACM.

Computer games have become a very interesting environment or testbed to develop new algorithms in many of the branches of Artificial Intelligence. In fact, collectible card games, such as Hearthstone, have recently attracted the attention of researchers because of their characteristics: uncertainty, randomness, or the infinite and unpredictable interactions that can occur in a game. In this game each player composes decks to face other players from a pool of more than 3,000 cards, each one with its own rules and statistics. This implies a great variability of decks and card combinations with rich effects. This paper proposes the use of clustering techniques to extract information from data provided by Hearthstone players, i.e. a Game Mining approach. To do so, more than 500,000 decks created by game players (both experts and just enthusiasts) have been downloaded from Hearthpwn website. Thus, a descriptive analysis of this dataset, along with Data Mining techniques, have been carried out in order to understand which archetypes (or deck types) are the favourites among the community of players, and what relationships can be identified between them. The results show that it is possible to use clustering algorithms such as K-Means to automatically detect the archetypes used by the players. Copyright © 2020 for this paper by its authors.

This paper presents an automatic classification system of Long Period (LP) and Volcano Tectonic (VT) events from the Cotopaxi volcano, by using two Deep Learning techniques: Stack Autoencoders and Deep Neural Networks. We used a dataset provided by the Instituto Geofísico de la Escuela Politécnica Nacional (IGEPN) containing 1,044 LP and 101 VT events, in addition, we employed data augmentation process by considering a synthetic microseisms generator based on Conditional Generative Adversarial Network. Our dataset comprises 10,000 microseisms, including both real and synthetic instances. In the feature extraction stage, which involves computing Power Spectral Density (PSD) by using Welch’s estimator with a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) of 512 points, resulting in 257 frequency-based features. Additionally, we extracted coefficients from the Discrete Wavelet Transform using Symlet as the mother wavelet with six decomposition levels; then, PSD was computed on these coefficients, yielding an additional 257 frequency-scale features. Deep Learning algorithms were trained on this feature rich dataset and evaluated using standard performance metrics. The autoencoder technique yielded the best results, achieving an accuracy of 99.73% and a balanced error rate (BER) of 0.0027, indicating misclassification of only 3 out of 1000 microseisms. These results exceed the geophysical requirement of a BER below 0.01. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of Deep Learning techniques in classifying LP and VT events, offering promising avenues for improved volcanic risk monitoring and assessment.

In this paper, a novel multiband phased array antenna with endfire radiation pattern is designed at millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequency bands for 5G mobile applications. The proposed antenna element is a compact quasi-Yagi with a modified dipole driver to generate multiband operation, arranged on low-loss RO4003C materiel. The antenna array achieves excellent performance and covers wide frequency ranges of (24.15-29.8 GHz), (36.2-50 GHz) to support 5G NR bands; 26, 28, 39 and the new allocated 48 GHz. The array can exhibit a maximum realized gain from 8.4 dBi to 11.8 dBi. Meanwhile, wide beam-scanning angles from − 68° to 65° at 28 GHz, from 40° to 41° at 39 GHz, and from − 33° to 35° at 48 GHz are realized.
