Industrial Control Systems (ICS) networks are an increasingly attractive for attackers. The case of 2015 Ukraine cyber attack where hackers abused the ICS system to create a blackout is a good illustration of this interest. However, to achieve physical effects, it is necessary for attackers to embed themselves deep within the target network. So, attackers must protect this investment by using covert techniques to avoid detection by defenders. This paper explores the problem of highly covert long-lived command and control channels to gain insight into probable evolution paths for attackers in response to increasing defensive capabilities. In particular, it presents a timing-based covert channel for the Modbus using interference. An implementation of the channel using network man-in-The-middle to modulate timing is built as a proof-of-concept of the approach. A performance analysis of the implementation shows that the implementation performs as low bandwidth, but highly covert command and control channel. Furthermore, an analysis of packet captures from a real production network show that the approach would be likely to work in a production environment. © 2017 IEEE.

5G is expected to bring tremendous advancement in wireless cellular network by providing faster speed, high capacity and low latency. It has widely been adopted in various parts of the world and is expected to bring a noteworthy revolution in major industries and overall economies. although 5G service providers are promising integrity, confidentiality and availability of data, still security is an important concern that needs to be addressed. This paper provides a detailed survey on 5G security by addressing 5G opportunities, common threats targeting 5G network along with their mitigation strategies, security services offered by 5G networks and 5G security challenges. We have also provided a case study to demonstrate the potentials of 5G. This survey will help 5G researchers, service providers and 5G users in getting quick awareness of 5G network.

Feedback motion planning for long-range autonomous underwater vehicles

Ocean ecosystems have spatiotemporal variability and dynamic complexity that require a long-term deployment of an autonomous underwater vehicle for data collection. A new long-range autonomous underwater vehicle called Tethys is adapted to study different oceanic phenomena. Additionally, an ocean environment has external forces and moments along with changing water currents which are generally not considered in a vehicle kinematic model. In this scenario, it is not enough to generate a simple trajectory from an initial location to a goal location in an uncertain ocean as the vehicle can deviate from its intended trajectory. As such, we propose to compute a feedback plan that adapts the vehicle trajectory in the presence of any modeled or unmodeled uncertainties. In this work, we present a feedback motion planning method for the Tethys vehicle by combining a predictive ocean model and its kinematic modeling. Given a goal location, the Tethys kinematic model, and the water flow pattern, our method computes a feedback plan for the vehicle in a dynamic ocean environment that reduces its energy consumption. The computed feedback plan provides the optimal action for the Tethys vehicle to take from any location of the environment to reach the goal location considering its orientation. Astrophysical observations of the cosmos allow us to probe extreme physicsand answer foundational questions on our universe. Modern astronomy isincreasingly operating under a holistic approach, probing the same questionwith multiple diagnostics including how sources vary over time, how they appearacross the electromagnetic spectrum, and through their other signatures,including gravitational waves, neutrinos, cosmic rays, and dust on *** observations are now reaching the point where approximate physicsmodels are insufficient. Key sources of interest are explosive transients,whose understanding requires multidisciplinary studies at the intersection ofastrophysics, gravity, nuclear science, plasma physics, fluid dynamics andturbulence, computation, particle physics, atomic, molecular, and opticalscience, condensed matter and materials science, radiation transport, and highenergy density physics. This white paper provides an overview of the majorscientific advances that lay at the intersection of physics and astronomy andare best probed through time-domain and multimessenger astrophysics, anexploration of how multidisciplinary science can be fostered, and introductorydescriptions of the relevant scientific disciplines and key astrophysicalsources of interest. © 2025, CC BY.

Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DalYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival. © 2022, The Author(s).

A search for leptoquark pair production decaying into $$te^- \bar{t}e^+$$ or $$t\mu ^- \bar{t}\mu ^+$$ in final states with multiple leptons is presented. The search is based on a dataset of pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s}=13~\text {TeV} $$ recorded with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb $$^{-1}$$ . Four signal regions, with the requirement of at least three light leptons (electron or muon) and at least two jets out of which at least one jet is identified as coming from a b-hadron, are considered based on the number of leptons of a given flavour. The main background processes are estimated using dedicated control regions in a simultaneous fit with the signal regions to data. No excess above the Standard Model background prediction is observed and 95% confidence level limits on the production cross section times branching ratio are derived as a function of the leptoquark mass. Under the assumption of exclusive decays into $$te^{-}$$ ( $$t\mu ^{-}$$ ), the corresponding lower limit on the scalar mixed-generation leptoquark mass $$m_{\textrm{LQ}_{\textrm{mix}}^{\textrm{d}}}$$ is at 1.58 (1.59) TeV and on the vector leptoquark mass $$m_{{\tilde{U}}_1}$$ at 1.67 (1.67) TeV in the minimal coupling scenario and at 1.95 (1.95) TeV in the Yang–Mills scenario.

We report the discovery of the most eccentric transiting brown dwarf in the brown dwarf desert, TOI-2490b. The brown dwarf desert is the lack of brown dwarfs around main sequence stars within ∼ 3 AU and is thought to be caused by differences in formation mechanisms between a star and planet. To date, only ∼ 40 transiting brown dwarfs have been confirmed. TOI-2490b is a (Equation presented) brown dwarf orbiting a (Equation presented) sun-like star on a 60.33 d orbit with an eccentricity of 0.77989 ± 0.00049. The discovery was detected within TESS sectors 5 (30 minute cadence) and 32 (2 minute and 20 second cadence). It was then confirmed with 31 radial velocity measurements with FEROS by the WINE collaboration and photometric observations with the Next Generation Transit Survey. Stellar modelling of the host star estimates an age of ∼ 8 Gyr, which is supported by estimations from kinematics likely placing the object within the thin disc. However, this is not consistent with model brown dwarf isochrones for the system age suggesting an inflated radius. Only one other transiting brown dwarf with an eccentricity higher than 0.6 is currently known in the brown dwarf desert. Presented is the search for anomalous Higgs boson decays into two axion-like particles (alPs) using the full Run 2 data set of $$140\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $$13\,\text {TeV}$$ recorded by the ATLAS experiment. The alPs are assumed to decay into two photons, providing sensitivity to recently proposed models that could explain the $$(g-2)_\mu $$ discrepancy. This analysis covers an alP mass range from 100 to $$62\,\text {GeV}$$ and alP-photon couplings in the range $$10^{-7}\,\text {TeV}^{-1}

ASD: Emotions and behavioural-based interventions through social sensor networks

In India, nowadays one per 88 children is born with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) contrary to a ratio of one per 110 children few years back. In this paper, we propose a social sensor network for individuals with ASD to offer medical promotions as intervention and first aid. They should be in care and medical surveillances. We are monitoring enjoyment, frustration, boredom, and stress by using body-worn sensors and video streaming. This sensor collects the information from the human body and transmits it to their smart phones then to the external server. We introduce an algorithm named as spectrum clustering algorithm (SCA) which clusters people based on activities of the child. Communication is provided between the clusters of people by using context recommendation algorithm. We use prerogative response algorithm (PRA) for load balancing on server while processing the requests. Our processes are simulated using Omnet++ simulator and provide effective results.
