To investigate the genetic basis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) to high resolution, the GoT2D and T2D-GENES consortia catalogued variation from whole-genome sequencing of 2,657 European individuals and exome sequencing of 12,940 individuals of multiple ancestries. Over 27M SNPs, indels, and structural variants were identified, including 99% of low-frequency (minor allele frequency [MAF] 0.1-5%) non-coding variants in the whole-genome sequenced individuals and 99.7% of low-frequency coding variants in the whole-exome sequenced individuals. Each variant was tested for association with T2D in the sequenced individuals, and, to increase power, most were tested in larger numbers of individuals (>80% of low-frequency coding variants in ~82 K Europeans via the exome chip, and ~90% of low-frequency non-coding variants in ~44 K Europeans via genotype imputation). The variants, genotypes, and association statistics from these analyses provide the largest reference to date of human genetic information relevant to T2D, for use in activities such as T2D-focused genotype imputation, functional characterization of variants or genes, and other novel analyses to detect associations between sequence variation and T2D.

Due to the increasing availability of data and wider use of analytics, the ingredients for increased reliance on modeling and simulation are now present. Tremendous progress has been made in the field of modeling and simulation over the last six decades. software and methodologies have advanced greatly. In the area of weather, future-casts based on model predictions have become highly accurate and heavily relied upon. This is happening in other domains, as well. In a similar vein, drivers may come to rely upon future-casts of traffic that are based on predictions from models fed by sensor data. The need for and the capabilities of simulation have never been greater. This panel will examine the future of research in modeling and simulation by (1) examining prior progress, (2) pointing out current weaknesses and limitations, (3) highlighting directions for future research, and (4) discussing support for research including funding opportunities.

Collaborative Virtual Environment (CVE) has become popular in the last few years. In CVE the state of the virtual objects is witnessing rapid change. When a user performs an action in CVE, the information of the action needs to be transmitted to other users to maintain consistency in the cooperative work. Currently, in the design of most CVE systems, TCP is used for its reliability. When packet loss and round trip time are high during data transmission, it affects the performance of the CVE systems. This result to inconsistent state of virtual world even with the later retransmission of the lost packets. This paper implements a cloud based architecture for improving consistency and scalability in CVE systems proposed by Gital et al. (2014). We analyze and compares the drop rate and RTT of different TCP variants with CVE architecture. Our simulation results show that Vegas, New Reno and Reno can be promising TCP variants in the cloud based CVE systems compared to other variants. The Vegas, New Reno and Reno can effectively be used as an alternative to other variants of the TCP in efficient applications of the CVE.

This paper describes an eye-controlled game designed for behavioral therapy of ADHD. A user-centered design approach was adopted in the development cycle of these games in close collaboration with domain experts and target user populations. The games have an Arabic language interface and include multimodal interaction. Game scenarios were designed with increasing complexity depicted in visual design, dwell time for controlling elements within the games, and combinations of key presses with eye-control at higher levels of attention training. The visual design, interaction design and the system's conceptual designs are discussed. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

Electroencephalograph (EEG) based BCI (Brain-computer Interfacing) paradigm has become a research topic in computer science and, in particular, human-computer interaction. In this paradigm, BCI applications have been largely focused on improving the quality of life for both able-bodied users as well as users with special needs. Despite the fact that low-cost off-the-shelf EEG headsets are becoming more accessible by and affordable to researchers to conduct research with, the past few years have witnessed unparalleled efforts to make EEG based BCI applications accessible using these headsets. This paper focuses on the challenges associated with developing EEG based BCI control applications, using low-cost off-the-shelf EEG headsets in controlled experiments, and usability issues with the software. We report experiences from several research studies and the barriers that hinder the full utilization of EEG BCI off-the-shelf headset in research contexts. © 2013 The Science and Information Organization.

alzheimer's disease (AD) is a growing problem that affects the lives of diagnosed individuals and their caregivers. Many AD patients and their caregivers find the symptoms of memory loss and emotional distress the most challenging and distressing effects of the disease. Psychosocial therapy is often sought for symptoms affecting memory, communication, the ability to learn new skills and behavioral problems such as agitation, aggression, and depression. In this paper, we describe interactive technologies designed as catalysts for longitudinal monitoring of memory decline for people with AD and for facilitating interactions between caregivers and people with alzheimer's. Design considerations for elderly patients, variability of visual and auditory memory cues, and implications for objectively monitoring the progressive decline of memory in the context of reminiscence therapy are discussed. © 2013 The Science and Information Organization.

The number of potential vulnerabilities and threats are increasing for software. Security testing is an essential process to confirm software security requirements and to identify security related vulnerabilities. In this paper we use analytical hierarchy process (AHP) to analyze and compare different available security testing techniques based on a pre defined criteria. Five testing techniques were selected which includes Source code analysis, Fault code injection, Robustness, Stress and Penetration testing techniques. They have been evaluated against five criteria which include cost, thoroughness, ease of use, effectiveness and efficiency. The outcome of the study is helpful for researchers, testers and developers to understand effectiveness of each technique in its respective domain. also the study helps to compare the inner working of testing techniques against a selected criterion to achieve optimum testing results.
