Two erbium doped fiber laser configurations are conceived and constructed; A ring fiber laser and a linear cavity fiber loop laser. A comparative investigation tests were carried out. It is found that both the output power and the side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) for the two structures were significantly different. The measured laser power and the side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of 11 mW and 75 dB respectively were higher for the linear cavity configuration. A lower output power and SMSR of 3 mW and 61.5 dB respectively were obtained with the ring laser configuration. Both lasers were pumped with a 90 mW pump power, and had a reflectivity of 90%.

The current period is marked by the increased application of Web servers and the use of web 2.0 for many utilities. As the access to the Web 2.0 by the global users is on ever increase, the hijackers eye on the Web 2.0 for attacks. The principal technology behind the Web 2.0 is the AJAX which now becomes the target of many security attacks. In the current study we have introduced AJAX PRO, a prototype tool for AJAX vulnerability prevention has visualized an enhanced architecture to reflect the AJAX vulnerability and the architecture is applied in randomized trails and the results call for increased applications.

A software based hybrid test vector compression technique for testing system-on-chip integrated circuits using an embedded processor core was previously discussed by the authors. In this approach, a software program is loaded into the on-chip processor memory along with the compressed test data sets. To minimize on-chip storage besides testing time, the test data volume is first reduced by compaction in a hybrid manner before downloading into the processor. The proposed method utilizes a set of adaptive coding techniques for realizing lossless compression. The compaction program need not be loaded into the embedded processor, as only the decompression of test data is required for the automatic test equipment. The developed scheme necessitates minimal hardware overhead, while the on-chip embedded processor can be reused for normal operation on completion of testing. As an extension of this prior work, this paper reports further results on studies of the problem based on the use of Limpel-Ziv-Walsh coding besides Burrows-Wheeler transformation and demonstrates the feasibility of the suggested methodology with simulation results on ISCAS 85 combinational and ISCAS 89 full-scan sequential benchmark circuits.

In order to realize the industrialization production of software, people have carried out research on and analysis the software product line architecture of the growing maturity, component technology and development methods for product line. In this paper, a novel software engineering process model is proposed based on the modern industrial production systems and automated production method: that is ¿N-life-cycle model¿. Based on this new model, not only integrated software engineering environment model and framework have been proposed, which are based on the product line development process model, but also study systematically on theirs implementation. "N-life-cycle model" and "integrated software engineering environment model based on the product line" which are set up in the article are brand-new open models possessing modern manufacturing production characteristic. The models can impel the research development quickly of product line engineering and product line software engineering environment towards the industrialisation and automatization of the software industry.

This article gives a capsule view of research on rough set theory and applications ongoing at universities and laboratories in China. Included in this capsule view of rough set research is a brief description of the following things: Chinese research groups on rough set with their URLs for web pages, names of principal researchers (supervisors), numbers of graduate students, and topics being investigated. Statistical summaries showing the growth in the research on rough set theory and application in China are included. In addition, an introduction summarizing the research interests of Chinese researchers is included in this article. Due to paradigm shift from system-on-board to designs embracing embedded cores-based system-on-chips (SOCs), the complexity of digital circuits has enormously increased in recent times. This growing complexity has created a huge challenge in developing their appropriate and efficient fault testing environment. Despite enormous efforts directed towards effective testing of very large scale integrated (VLSI) circuit chips with reasonable cost, new frontiers emerged with advances in technology. The subject paper plans to develop a method to test verify circuit architecture under a hardware software co-design environment, specifically targeting embedded cores-based system-on-chips (SOCs). The concept of design-for-testability (DFT) is utilized in the paper together with ModelSim simulation and verification tool to test simulate the entire design. Some simulation results on ISCAS 85 combinational benchmark circuits are also included with a comparison of the results with some earlier works.

Previous work in the area of machine learning has demonstrated the feasibility of using input of a visual sensory system for an adaptive learning algorithm for a robotic putter [1]. The previous environment used was a flat, almost frictionless four-foot by eight-foot surface. The sensory input was provided via an overhead vision system. That study focused on a learning algorithm that allowed the robotic putter to adapt, based on information recorded from previous putts at different areas of the putting surface in order to improve its accuracy. This research extended the previous work in the area of making the environment more complex and creating a more realistic putting situation. Overhead vision tracked the motion of single putts and this information was stored for putts of different angles. The main focus of this project was the development of an algorithm that interprets the sensory data and learns from the path of the ball the degree of slope present and how to adapt to it and complete successful putts.

ECG and heart rate determination in fetal cattle using a digital signal processing method

A method of recording the fetal electrocardiogram (ECG) and heart rate (HR) is described. An abdominal lead and a thoracic lead were used to measure the fetal ECG and maternal ECG, respectively. The maternal component in the abdominal lead measurement was estimated by a digital adaptive filter using the thoracic lead measurement as a reference. By suppressing the estimated maternal components in the abdominal lead, the fetal ECG could be detected. The beat-by-beat fetal QRS complex peaks were determined by a digital matched filter from the fetal ECG enhanced in this way. The method was trialed in 10 pregnant Holstein cows at gestational periods ranging from 136 to 224 days. The results show that this method can extract the fetal ECG and determine the fetal HR from the raw noisy measurement data. The results suggest that the method would have applicability in monitoring fetal ECG as well as providing a non-invasive, continuous HR profile during gestation, which will enable better understanding of the development of cattle fetuses before delivery.

Ablative treatments are gaining increasing attention as an alternative to standard surgical therapies, especially for patients with contraindication or those who refuse open surgery. Thermal ablation is used in clinical applications mainly for treating heart arrhythmias, benign prostate hyperplasia, and nonoperable liver tumors;there is also increasing application to other organ sites, including the kidney, lung, and brain. Potential benefits of thermal ablation include reduced morbidity and mortality in comparison with standard surgical resection and the ability to treat nonsurgical patients. The purpose of this review is to outline and discuss the engineering principles and biological responses by which thermal ablation techniques can provide elevation of temperature in organs within the human body. Because of the individual problems associated with each type of treatment, a wide range of ablation techniques have evolved including cryoablation as well as ultrasound, radiofrequency (RF), microwave, and laser ablation. Aspects of each ablation technique, including mechanisms of action, equipment required, selection of eligible patients, treatment techniques, and patient outcomes are presented, along with a discussion of limitations of the techniques and future research directions. © 2007 by Begell House, Inc.

Thermal therapy, Part IV: Electromagnetic and thermal dosimetry

In this article some of the important techniques in electromagnetic (EM) and thermal dosimetry are reviewed. Three major areas are discussed: modeling power deposition and estimation of EM energy absorbed by tissues exposed to EM radiation, electrical-thermal modeling for thermal therapy with various models of heat transfer in living tissues, and thermal dosimetry using invasive and noninvasive thermometry. Knowledge about the temperature distributions achieved can only be obtained by treatment planning of patient therapy. This process is called thermal therapy planning system (TTPS), which is a large and complex system for design, control, documentation, and evaluation of the treatment that also provides data for treatment optimization. Various imaging techniques for guidance and monitoring necessary for clinical treatments are also discussed. The review concludes by suggesting future avenues for investigations. © 2007 by Begell House, Inc.
