Recognizing constructs within mathematical modelling

There has been much research on specifying frameworks within which the mathematical modelling develops, or assessing such tasks to properly reward student achievement. Little attention has so far been paid to recognizing attainment levels of students at de¢ned stages of a modelling process. In this research we discuss a research tool that has the potential to identify a student’s development in mathematical modelling, to gauge the e¡ectiveness of teaching styles adopted and to enhance learning. We report on pilot applications of a questionnaire at two universities in the UK. We discuss the construction and testing of the research instrument and consider implications of the research and directions for further research. © The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications 2002.

This document1 contains definitions of a wide range of concepts specific to and widely used within temporal databases. In addition to providing definitions, the document also includes explanations of concepts as well as discussions of the adopted names. The consensus effort that lead to this glossary was initiated in Early 1992. Earlier versions appeared in SIGMOD Record in September 1992 and March 1994. The present glossary subsumes all the previous documents. The glossary meets the need for creating a higher degree of consensus on the definition and naming of temporal database concepts. Two sets of criteria are included. First, all included concepts were required to satisfy four relevance criteria, and, second, the naming of the concepts was resolved using a set of evaluation criteria. The concepts are grouped into three categories: concepts of general database interest, of temporal database interest, and of specialized interest. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

Arabic character recognition using 1-D slices of the character spectrum

An Arabic character recognition algorithm using 1-D slices of the character spectrum is presented. The Fourier spectrum of the character's projections on the X- and Y-axes is estimated. The features are extracted from this 2-D spectrum. The features of 10 sets of characters were used as model features. The features of an input character are compared with the models' features using a distance measure. The model with the minimum distance is taken as the class representing the input character. Experimental results have shown that the presented algorithm is capable of recognizing Arabic characters with a recognition rate of 99.06%, using 10 features of the X-projection. This rate rises to 99.94% when 10 features of the Y-projection are added. The proposed system was compared with another, based on the Fourier descriptors, which was capable of recognizing 97.5% of test characters using 10 Fourier descriptors. The presented technique is superior to that of the Fourier descriptors in terms of recognition rates and speed, as fast Fourier transform is used in the calculation of the spectrum while standard equations are used to compute the Fourier descriptors. Both techniques are invariant to shift. However, the Fourier descriptor is invariant also to rotation and scale. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

This paper describes the construction of and early experiences with a software engineering support environment for projects using globally distributed teams. The goals of the project are twofold. Firstly, it aims to construct a pragmatic solution to the problems experienced by widely geographically dispersed groups which collaborate on software development projects. Secondly, it aims to experiment with processes which facilitate software shift work through exploitation of time differences between collaborating groups. The construction of the support environment, known as GWSE (Global Working in software engineering) system, is presented, including its architecture and integration with existing workflow, document and project management tools. The use of the GWSE system in a trial development project is then described, including an initial quantitative analysis of the collaboration overheads experienced.

In this paper we describe an implementation of some kinds of parallel genetic algorithms on the PVM,Parallel Virtual Machine, a portable parallel environment. We give details of a genetic algorithm running On many small subpopulations with an occasional identification and exchange of their useful information among subpopulations by means of message-passing functions of PVM. In this work, experiments were done to compare the parallel genetic algorithm and traditional sequential genetic algorithms.

This paper demonstrates the use of an integrated toolset for program understanding. By leveraging the unique capabilities of individual tools, and exploiting their power in combination, the resultant toolset is able to facilitate specific reverse engineering tasks that would otherwise be difficult or impossible. This is illustrated by applying the integrated toolset to several typical reverse engineering scenarios, including code localization, data flow analysis, pattern matching, system clustering, and visualization, using a mid-size production program as the reference system.

Edge intelligence (EI) integrates edge computing and artificial intelligence empowering service providers to deploy deep neural networks (DNNs) on edge servers in proximity to users to provision intelligent applications (e.g., autonomous driving) for ubiquitous Internet of Things (IoT) in smart cities, which facilitates the quality of experience (QoE) of users and improves the processing and energy efficiency. However, considering DNN is typically computational-intensive and resource-hungry, conventional placement approaches ignore the influence of multi-dimensional resource requirements (processor, memory, etc.), which may degrade the real-time performance. Moreover, with the increasing scale of geo-distributed edge servers, centralized decision-making is still challenging to find the optimal strategies effectively. To overcome these shortcomings, in this paper we propose a game theoretic DNN placement approach in EI-enabled IoT. First, a DNN placement optimization problem is formulated to maximize system benefits, which is proven to be \(\mathcal {N}\mathcal {P}\)-hard and model the original problem as an exact potential game (EPG). Moreover, an EPG-based DNN model placement algorithm, named EPOL, is designed for edge servers to make sub-optimal strategies independently and theoretical analysis is possessed to guarantee the performance of EPOL. Finally, real-world dataset based experimental results corroborate the superiority and effectiveness of EPOL.
