The task of keeping a specific geometric configuration while following a designated path is common in various fields that involve autonomous robots. When done correctly, this approach can result in several advantages, including a reduction in system costs and an increase in system reliability and efficiency, while maintaining the adaptability and flexibility of the system. The concept of maintaining a particular geometric pattern during motion is frequently utilized in different scenarios. For example, unmanned military vehicles must maintain a particular formation to explore and cover terrain during missions. Another example is in 'Smart Highways,' where the traffic system's capacity can be enhanced significantly by having vehicles move in groups at the same speed while maintaining a certain distance between them. This research presents an algorithm that allows a group of self-governing mobile robots to move while maintaining a specific geometric structure. A behavior-based control algorithm is advanced to regulate the movement of these systems. The coordination of the robots within the system is accomplished through the implementation of a leader-follower technique, with virtual leader. © 2023 IEEE.

Prediction Instability in Machine Learning Ensembles

In machine learning ensembles predictions from multiple models are aggregated. Despite widespread use and strong performance of ensembles in applied problems little is known about the mathematical properties of aggregating models and associated consequences for safe, explainable use of such models. In this paper we prove a theorem that shows that any ensemble will exhibit at least one of the following forms of prediction instability. It will either ignore agreement among all underlying models, change its mind when none of the underlying models have done so, or be manipulable through inclusion or exclusion of options it would never actually predict. As a consequence, ensemble aggregation procedures will always need to balance the benefits of information use against the risk of these prediction instabilities. This analysis also sheds light on what specific forms of prediction instability to expect from particular ensemble algorithms;for example popular tree ensembles like random forest, or xgboost will violate basic, intuitive fairness properties. Finally, we show that this can be ameliorated by using consistent models in asymptotic conditions. © 2024, CC BY.

In the rapidly advancing landscape of intelligent medical technology, high-precision and widely applicable medical image segmentation techniques are pivotal in advancing personalized treatment plans and enhancing patient experiences. To address inherent obstacles, such as complex structures and features that are difficult to capture in segmentation tasks, we first propose a CMH module that merges convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with state space models (e.g., Mamba). This module hierarchically integrates CNN's local priors into the Mamba layer, adeptly capturing specific details of target objects and broader contextual information from different perspectives. Subsequently, we introduce an information fusion module based on Mamba (MIH), aimed at dynamically fusing feature information from different paths and levels to enhance feature expression and discrimination. Building upon the abovementioned modules, we develop an unexplored segmentation model, CMHNet, capable of flexibly capturing feature maps of varying scales and angles from medical images. In the experiments, we present CMHNet's distinguished performance in segmentation tasks through massive experiments on four medical datasets. © 2024 IEEE.

This research introduces a novel dual-pathway convolutional neural network (DP-CNN) architecture tailored for robust performance in Log-Mel spectrogram image analysis derived from raw multichannel electromyography signals. The primary objective is to assess the effectiveness of the proposed DP-CNN architecture across three datasets (NinaPro DB1, DB2, and DB3), encompassing both able-bodied and amputee subjects. Performance metrics, including accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score, are employed for comprehensive evaluation. The DP-CNN demonstrates notable mean accuracies of 94.93 ± 1.71% and 94.00 ± 3.65% on NinaPro DB1 and DB2 for healthy subjects, respectively. Additionally, it achieves a robust mean classification accuracy of 85.36 ± 0.82% on amputee subjects in DB3, affirming its efficacy. Comparative analysis with previous methodologies on the same datasets reveals substantial improvements of 28.33%, 26.92%, and 39.09% over the baseline for DB1, DB2, and DB3, respectively. The DP-CNN’s superior performance extends to comparisons with transfer learning models for image classification, reaffirming its efficacy. Across diverse datasets involving both able-bodied and amputee subjects, the DP-CNN exhibits enhanced capabilities, holding promise for advancing myoelectric control. © 2024 the Author(s), licensee AIMS Press.

Advancements in single-cell multi-omics sequencing technologies have dramatically transformed the analysis of cellular states at single-cell resolution. Cluster analyses leveraging single-cell transcriptome and epigenome data have enabled the characterization of cellular states and the delineation of transcriptomic regulatory programs associated with cellular heterogeneity. However, the high dimensionality, sparsity, and heterogeneity inherent to multi-omics data present significant challenges to their clustering analysis. In this study, we introduced single-cell Multi-Omics Generative Adversarial Networks (scMOGAN), an unsupervised clustering model specifically tailored for single-cell transcriptome and epigenome data. scMOGAN accomplishes this by efficaciously modeling the omics data and mining potential features through neural networks, ultimately utilizing Gaussian mixture models for cell type identification. To validate and scrutinize the performance of scMOGAN, we performed analyses on two actual multi-omics datasets and one simulated dataset. The results demonstrate that scMOGAN surpasses other existing methods in terms of clustering performance, underscoring its efficacy in navigating the complexities of multi-omics data. © 2023 IEEE.

Modern fault diagnosis faces an imbalance issue at both the sample and feature levels. A common approach is to combine balancing strategies with feature selection algorithms to address this problem. However, this may result in feature subsets that cannot accurately represent the true data distribution. This paper proposes an imbalanced fault diagnosis method called RPLFS-MOBPSO, which combines region purity (RP) with local feature selection to achieve class balance implicitly by partitioning local regions. RP is used as a new objective in the optimization process to achieve accurate fault detection. The adaptive reference point method from Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm III is employed to maintain a diverse and evenly distributed external archive. On both the simulated Tennessee Eastma (TE) benchmark datasets and the real bearing experimental bench datasets, the proposed method achieves the best results compared to two LFS methods and four imbalanced ensemble algorithms based on different balancing strategies. In smaller components of industrial or energy automation systems, such as device controllers of Protection and Control (PAC) systems in smart grids, controller functionality is tightly coupled with the physical device or sensor capabilities. At this level, software is small and therefore easy to maintain and test. However, when multiple controllers are interconnected and higher-level functionality is added, software applications grow exponentially, and ensuring maintainability becomes proportionally challenging. In this paper, we extend the IEC 61499 reference architecture used to develop industrial automation software with the principles of Abstraction Layered Architecture (ALA) that has shown up to 400% improvements in industrial software maintainability. We show that even a light application of abstraction layering on the top, application-level of IEC 61499 applications makes them significantly more readable and slightly more maintainable. More concrete gains in maintainability are expected when abstraction layering is integrated into lower layers. © 2024 IEEE.

The timely management of an unruptured aneurysm can prevent hemorrhage. Multiple anatomical, morphological, and hemodynamic features associated with an aneurysm can predict the risk of rupture and classify the nature of the aneurysm as either ruptured or unruptured. However, considering all features may create ambiguities in the model due to inter-dependencies, such as the correlation between aneurysm height and width to aneurysm area. In computer-aided medical diagnostics, focusing on relevant features that diagnose the disease is more crucial than using an abundance of features that may not contribute to the diagnosis and may cause unnecessary complexity. The use of independent or sparsely correlated features improves the accuracy of the classifier. The proposed research analyzes the interdependency of features by calculating the correlation between features. Based on the analyses, the high correlation threshold is determined through rigorous experimentation. From the highly correlated features, one feature is selected. Consequently, the reduced feature set is recommended. The reduced feature set performs better with simpler classifiers. Instead of choosing a classifier that struggles with a broad range of features, an appropriately optimized feature set can enhance performance and improve accuracy. The proposed approach is tested on a publicly available dataset of aneurysms, leading to an improvement in classification accuracy from 82.6% to 87%, due to the use of an appropriate feature set. Moreover, the best model was evaluated using two different explainable AI frameworks to assess the contribution of each feature in prediction. However, the conflicting feature prioritization in each explainable framework suggests that these models prioritize different features for the same trained model, leading to ambiguity. This inconsistency indicates that the explainable models lack generalization and fail to consistently analyze feature importance.

Cancer survival prediction is pivotal in tailoring individualized treatment strategies and guiding clinician decision-making. Yet, existing methodologies grapple with efficiently harnessing the intricate distribution of medical data spanning various modalities. In response, we present SAMMS, an advanced multi-omics multimodal deep learning framework tailored for survival prediction. SAMMS leverages the robust image segmentation model, "Segment Anything"to adeptly characterize pathological images. This prowess is further enhanced by integrating multi-omics data and clinical insights, facilitating holistic modeling across a diverse modal spectrum. The framework weaves a modality-specific subnetwork with a cross-modality common subnetwork, meticulously capturing intra-modality nuances and inter-modality correlations. SAMMS eclipsed its contemporaries by delivering remarkable performance on TCGA's LGG and KIRC tumor datasets. A battery of analyses underscored SAMMS's unparalleled capability to distill multifaceted insights from multimodal datasets, yielding richer and more integrative multimodal representations. Such strides promise significant advancements in cancer survival analytics, bolstering the precision and efficacy of patient-centric treatments, disease oversight, and clinical decision processes. © 2023 IEEE.

Depression is a psychiatric condition characterized by a persistent feeling of sadness and diminished interest in significant activities. Diagnosing this health problem is challenging because it relies on several social and physiological factors. The timely identification of depression aids in the prevention of severe outcomes, such as suicide. Early detection of depression levels is crucial to prevent adverse effects and enhance the quality of everyday life. The purpose of this work is to use data preprocessing techniques to create a clean dataset from noisy and incomplete medical data that includes blood biomarker values of patients and then apply data mining techniques to this dataset to predict the degree of depression. Adana Dr. Ekrem Tok Mental Health Hospital supplied the raw data for the study, with consent from the ethics committee. Missing data are completed by filling with the constant value and the most frequent value methods (i.e., 0 and mode values) in the relevant column. The classification of the dataset is performed using AdaBoost, Decision Tree (DT), and Logistic Regression (LR) classifiers, which have been previously used in medical datasets and demonstrated to be effective. The Logistic Regression classifier achieved the highest success rate (Accuracy: 0.541 and weighted F-score: 0.481). © 2024 IEEE.
