Camera sensor network (CSN) is widely used in many new applications. But low quality images or videos obtained by cheap surveillance cameras are a bottleneck for the development of CSN. A new motion-based blind super-resolution algorithm is proposed to improve the resolution of acquired image. In this method, improved projection transformation is adopted to estimate relative motion of the low-resolution (LR) images and do motion compensation. Then a universal projection function is created and iterates to reconstruct high-resolution (HR) images from these shifted LR images with blur and noise under the condition that any parameters of the degradation model are unknown. The experiment shows that whether evaluate from subjective or objective way the method is robust and effective. The drawback is that noise are still exists and slightly enlarged in somewhere.

This report summarizes the proceedings of the one day BioSharing meeting held at the Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology (ISMB) 2010 conference in Boston, MA, USA This inaugural BioSharing event was hosted by the Genomic Standards Consortium as part of its M3 & BioSharing special interest group (SIG) workshop. The BioSharing event included invited talks from a range of community leaders and a panel discussion at the end of the day. The panel session led to the formal agreement among community leaders to join together to promote cross-community knowledge exchange and collaborations. A key focus of the newly formed Biosharing community will be linking up resources to promote real-world data sharing (virtuous cycle of data) and supporting compliance with data policies through the creation of a one-stop-portal of information. Parallel disk systems consume a significant amount of energy due to the large number of disks. To design economically attractive and environmentally friendly parallel disk systems, in this paper we design and evaluate an energy-aware prefetching strategy for parallel disk systems consisting of a small number of buffer disks and large number of data disks. Using buffer disks to temporarily handle requests for data disks, we can keep data disks in the low-power mode as long as possible. Our prefetching algorithm aims to group many small idle periods in data disks to form large idle periods, which in turn allow data disks to remain in the standby state to save energy. To achieve this goal, we utilize buffer disks to aggressively fetch popular data from regular data disks into buffer disks, thereby putting data disks into the standby state for longer time intervals. A centrepiece in the prefetching mechanism is an energy-saving prediction model, based on which we implement the energy-saving calculation module that is invoked in the prefetching algorithm. We quantitatively compare our energy-aware prefetching mechanism against existing solutions, including the dynamic power management strategy. Experimental results confirm that the buffer-disk-based prefetching can significantly reduce energy consumption in parallel disk systems by up to 50 percent. In addition, we systematically investigate the energy efficiency impact that varying disk power parameters has on our prefetching algorithm.

This report summarizes the proceedings of the first day of the Metagenomics, Metadata and MetaAnalysis (M3) workshop held at the Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology 2010 conference. The second day, which was dedicated to the inaugural meeting of the BioSharing initiative is presented in a separate report. The Genomic Standards Consortium (GSC) hosted the first day of this Special Interest Group (SIG) at ISMB to continue exploring the bottlenecks and emerging solutions for obtaining biological insights through large-scale comparative analysis of metagenomic datasets. The M3 SIG included invited and selected talks and a panel discussion at the end of the day involving the plenary speakers. It is widely recommended by both academia and industry that today's technology and software engineering students be well prepared for industry before graduation, especially given global outsourcing and other trends. Various methods have been developed to ensure student readiness, including co-ops and capstone courses. These approaches increasingly use real-world projects for their benefits to industry and often to the community at large. In this paper, we argue that students can be prepared to effectively join industry and keep the US technology workforce competitive through a curriculum that includes a theoretical software engineering course with real-world projects and the collaboration of paired teams across two or more universities. We present a case study of a successful teaching experience that features these aspects, and describe the outcome along with the unique perspective of a participating student.

Reversible data embedding is a technique widely used to embed secret data into a specific media, such as military or medical images. In the past, many researchers have applied this scheme to the vector quantization (VQ) compression technique; however, the hiding capacity remains low. This paper proposes a novel data embedding scheme with reversibility for VQ compressed images. From our experimental results, we can confirm that the proposed scheme increases the hiding capacity and maintains high bit rates. Also, the VQ compressed images can be completely restored after extracting the embedded secret data.

MapReduce is a programming model that supports distributed and parallel processing for large-scale data-intensive applications such as machine learning, data mining, and scientific simulation. Hadoop is an open-source implementation of the MapReduce programming model. Hadoop is used by many companies including Yahoo!, Amazon, and Facebook to perform various data mining on large-scale data sets such as user search logs and visit logs. In these cases, it is very common to share the same computing resources by multiple users due to practical considerations about cost, system utilization, and manageability. However, Hadoop assumes that all cluster nodes are dedicated to a single user, failing to guarantee high performance in the shared MapReduce computation environment. In this paper, we propose two optimization schemes, prefetching and pre-shuffling, which improve the overall performance under the shared environment while retaining compatibility with the native Hadoop. The proposed schemes are implemented in the native Hadoop-0.18.3 as a plug-in component called HPMR (high performance MapReduce engine). Our evaluation on the Yahoo!Grid platform with three different workloads and seven types of test sets from Yahoo! shows that HPMR reduces the execution time by up to 73%.

Functional improvements to mobile terminals have made possible the spread of multimedia information delivery services. Especially for sports, a service that extracts important scenes and reports them to users has become popular. We take the approach that situational changes in a game's progress can be presented as state transitions, and devise an important scene analysis model based on Result Importance (RI), which represents each situation's actual importance, and Situation Importance (SI), which shows the degree of a chance at the situation. With our model, significant scenes are extracted dynamically. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method is very promising. Copyright © 2009 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Voting technology today has not addressed the issues that disabled voters are confronted with at the polls. Because approximately 17% of the voting population is disabled, their issues should be handled with a solution geared towards their needs. Disabled voters need to be able to cast their vote without the assistance of others. The Prime III multimodal voting system [2] addresses these issues. This demonstration will illustrate the use of the Prime III system, a virtual reality (VR) version (Prime V), and a similar version created using a voice user interface (VUI).

Three intrusion detection systems that use trails of system calls have been investigated. The three techniques used to generate the pattern database have been adapted from sequence method, lookahead-pairs method and variablelength- with-overlap-relationship method. Testing against Trojan horse and denial of service attacks was analyzed. None of the systems is capable of defeating the system-call denial-of-service-attack. Modification is necessary to indicate maximum threshold value for the number of times a pattern may be contiguously repeated. Furthermore, Lookahead-pairs method had the best space cost performance with a window size less than 24. © 2008 Simulation Councils, Inc.
