Modern enterprises are irreversibly dependent on large-scale, adaptive, component-based information systems whose complexity frequently exceeds current engineering capabilities for intellectual control, resulting in persistent difficulties in system development, management, and evolution. We propose an innovative framework of engineering representation and reasoning methods for developing these complex systems: the flow-service-quality (FSQ) framework. In dynamic network information systems with constantly varying function and usage, workflows and their corresponding traces of system services act as stable foundations for functional and non functional (quality attribute) specification, design, and operational control. Our objective is to provide theoretical foundations, language representations, and rigorous yet practical unified engineering methods to represent and reason about system flows as essential artifacts of system specification, design, and operation.

Two of the fundamental issues in message passing between mobile agents are tracking the migration of the target agent and delivering messages to it. In order to provide reliable message delivery, protocols are needed to overcome message loss caused by asynchronous operations of agent migration and message forwarding. In this paper, two message forwarding approaches, namely push and pull, are explored to design adaptive and reliable message delivery protocols. The pros and cons of these two approaches are evaluated, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The comparative performance evaluation is in terms of network traffic and delay in message processing. We also propose improvements to the pull approach to reduce network traffic and the message delay. We conclude that with different communication and migration patterns and requirements of real-time message processing, specific applications can select different message delivery approaches to achieve the desired level of performance and flexibility.

The field of software economics seeks to develop technical theories, guidelines, and practices of software development based on sound, established, and emerging models of value and value-creation - adapted to the domain of software development as necessary. The premise of the field is that software development is an ongoing investment activity - in which developers and managers continually make investment decisions requiring the expenditure of valuable resources, such as time, talent, and money. The overriding aim of this activity is to maximize the value added subject to an equitable distribution among the participating stakeholders. The goal of the paper is to expose the audience to this line of thinking and introduce the tools pertinent to its pursuit. The paper is designed to be self-contained and will cover concepts from introductory to advanced. Both practitioners and researchers with an interest in the impact of value considerations in software decision-making will benefit from attending it.

Industry often complains that current academic curricula fail to address the practical issues of real software development. This paper outlines a proposal for an innovative core curriculum for a Bachelor of science in computer science. The proposed core curriculum contains elements of traditional computer science programs combined with software engineering via a team-oriented, hands-on approach to large-scale software development. In addition to traditional lecture/ project/exam courses, students are required to take an eight-semester sequence of ‘software Factory’ courses. software Factory courses put the students' newly acquired skills to work in a real software organization staffed and managed by all students in the program. Students from all courses in the software Factory sequence meet simultaneously to fulfill their roles in the software organization. We expect that the students will be better prepared software engineering practitioners after completing a curriculum that combines traditional courses with practical software Factory experience. © 2002, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Multi Agent Based Simulation (MABS) has been used mostly in purely social contexts. However, compared to other approaches, e.g., traditional discrete event simulation, object-oriented simulation and dynamic micro simulation, MABS has a number of interesting properties which makes it useful also for other domains. For instance, it supports structure preserving modeling of the simulated reality, simulation of pro-active behavior, parallel computations, and very dynamic simulation scenarios. It is argued that MABS is a useful technique for simulating scenarios also in more technical domains. In particular, this hold for the simulation of technical systems that are distributed and involve complex interaction between humans and machines. To illustrate the advantages of MABS, an application concerning the monitoring and control of intelligent buildings is described. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

Stereotype in UML was introduced as a mean to allow its extension by defining specific semantics for a chosen modelling element. Possible usage of stereotype is constrained by the type of model element to which it can be applied and usually also by the context defined by configuration of other model elements. The paper examines some basic proper-ties that characterize stereotypes. Three categories of stereotypes are examined and elaborated in more detail. These include their characteristics, the way of defining them formally within the UML, and finally their usage as a mean for presentation of models in more compact form and as a set of 'reusable' elements for modelling.

ASIS has proven to be an effective platform for developing various program analysis tools. However, in many cases ASIS, as defined in the ASIS ISO standard, appears to be at a very low-level of abstraction compared to the needs of the tool developer. Higher-level interfaces and common libraries for specific needs should therefore be developed. The paper describes a ASIS secondary library providing abstractions and queries for analyzing object-oriented Ada code. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

In 1996, USC switched its core two-semester software engineering course from a hypothetical-project, homework-and-exam course based on the Bloom taxonomy of educational objectives (knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, evaluation). The revised course is a real-client team-project course based on the CRESST model of learning objectives (content understanding, problem solving, collaboration, communication, and self-regulation). We used the CRESST cognitive demands analysis to determine the necessary student skills required for software risk management and the other major project activities, and have been refining the approach over the last four years of experience, including revised versions for one-semester undergraduate and graduate project course at *** paper summarizes our experiences in evolving the risk management aspects of the project course. These have helped us mature more general techniques such as risk-driven specifications, domain specific simplifier and complicator lists, and the schedule as an independent variable (SSIV) process model. The largely positive results in terms of review pass/fail rates, client evaluations, product adoption rates, and hiring manager feedback are summarized as well.

There is a growing interest in empirical study in software engineering, both for validating mature technologies and for guiding improvements of less-mature technologies. This paper introduces an empirical methodology, based on experiences garnered over more than two decades of work by the Empirical software engineering Group at the University of Maryland and related organizations, for taking a newly proposed improvement to development processes from the conceptual phase through transfer to industry. The methodology presents a series of questions that should be addressed, as well as the types of studies that best address those questions. The methodology is illustrated by a specific research program on inspection processes for Object-Oriented designs. Specific examples of the studies that were performed and how the methodology impacted the development of the inspection process are also described.
