Developing effective debugging strategies to guarantee the reliability of software is important. By analyzing the debugging process used by experienced programmers, we have found that four distinct tasks are consistently performed: (1) determining statements involved in program failures, (2) selecting suspicious statements that might contain faults, (3) making hypotheses about suspicious faults (variables and locations), and (4) restoring program state to a specific statement for verification. This research focuses support for the second task, reducing the search domain for faults, which we refer to as fault *** explored a new approach to enhancing the process of fault localization based on dynamic program slicing and mutation-based testing. In this new approach, we have developed the technique of Critical Slicing to enable debuggers to highlight suspicious statements and thus to confine the search domain to a small region. The Critical Slicing technique is partly based on "statement deletion" mutant operator of the mutation-based testing methodology. We have explored properties of Critical Slicing, such as the relationship among Critical Slicing, Dynamic Program Slicing, and Executable Static Program Slicing;the cost to construct critical slices;and the effectiveness of Critical Slicing. Results of experiments support our conjecture as to the effectiveness and feasibility of using Critical Slicing for fault *** paper explains our technique and summarizes some of our findings. From these, we conclude that a debugger equipped with our proposed fault localization method can reduce human interaction time significantly and aid in the debugging of complex software. © 1996 ACM.

The Domain Decomposition Method(DDM) is a powerful approach to solving maily types of PDE's. DDM is especially suitable for massively Parallel computers. In the past, most research on DDM has focused on the domain splitting technique. In this paper. we focus our attention on use of a combination of techniques to solve each subproblem. The central question with DDM is that of how to doal with the pseodoboundary conditions. Here, we introduce a set of operators which act on the pseudo-boundaries in the solution process, referring to this new. procedure as the 'Generalized Domain Decomposition ***(GDDM).' We have already obtained convergence factors for GDDM with certain classes of PDE's. These ctonvergence factors show that we can derive exact solutions of the whole problem for certain types of PDE's, and can get superior speed of convergence for other types.

The center of Excellence for software and Systems engineering (CECASE) at the University of Kansas was established by the State of Kansas as a vehicle for developing and transferring advanced technology to Kansas businesses. In this paper we describe three CECASE projects that used three different methods of successfully transferring advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to Kansas companies. We describe the problems encountered, approaches tried, and successful solutions used. These projects and associated Al technology transfer methods can be used as models by other research and development organizations who wish to enhance the probability of success of their technology transfer.

Failure and module coverage data were collected during the system testing phase of a commercial hardware-software system called Product S. The Goel-Okumoto and Musa-Okumoto models were used to predict the Mean Test Cases to Failure (MTCTF) for these data. It was observed that the errors in predictions of MTCTF correlate with a sharp rise in code coverage. The sharp rise occurs when testers test code which was not previously tested. This observation suggests that software reliability prediction models may be able to improve the accuracy of prediction by accounting for code coverage.

A method for anomaly detection is introduced in which "normal" is defined by short-range correlations in a process' system calls. Initial experiments suggest that the definition is stable during normal behaviour for standard UNIX programs. Further; it is able to detect several common intrusions involving sendmail and 1pr. This work is part of a research program aimed at building computer security systems that incorporate the mechanisms and algorithms used by natural immune systems.

We propose a method for integrating a preexisting conventional database system with a multimedia server in a multidatabase environment. In the multidatabase environment, changes to the preexisting database system are not allowed because such changes are too expensive. For the integration, high-level semantic description of multimedia data is modeled using the enhanced entity-relationship (EER) model to support content-based retrieval of multimedia data. The EER design is translated into a schema of the preexisting database system and then the translated schema is integrated with the preexisting database schema. The content description can be used to locate pertinent multimedia data, and the identifiers are used to access the multimedia data stored in the multimedia server. However, with only a simple schema representation of the semantic description of multimedia data, high levels of recall and precision of queries may not be obtained because conventional database systems provide only exact matching answers to the query. Thus, we extended the conventional query processing mechanism by providing a modified cooperative query answering mechanism.

Scientific applications often require some strategy for temporary data storage to do the largest possible simulations. The use of virtual memory for temporary data storage has received criticism because of performance problems. However, modern virtual memory found in recent operating systems such as Cenju-3/DE give application writers control over virtual memory policies. We demonstrate that custom virtual memory policies can dramatically reduce virtual memory overhead and allow applications to run out-of-core efficiently. We also demonstrate that the main advantage of virtual memory, namely programming simplicity, is not lost.

This work describes the implementation of optimization techniques based on control theory for complex aircraft configurations. Here control theory is employed to derive the adjoint differential equations, the solution of which allows for a drastic reduction in computational costs over previous design methods [13, 12, 43, 38]. In our earlier studies [19, 20, 22, 23, 39, 25, 40, 41, 42] it was shown that this method could be used to devise effective optimization procedures for airfoils, wings and wing-bodies subject to either analytic or arbitrary meshes. Design formulations for both potential flows and flows governed by the Euler equations have been demonstrated, showing that such methods can be devised for various governing equations [39, 25]. In our most recent works [40, 42] the method was extended to treat wing-body configurations with a large number of mesh points, verifying that significant computational savings can be gained for practical design problems. In this paper the method is extended for the Euler equations to treat complete aircraft configurations via a new multiblock implementation. New elements include a multiblock-multigrid flow solver, a multiblock-multigrid adjoint solver, and a multiblock mesh perturbation scheme. Two design examples are presented in which the new method is used for the wing redesign of a transonic business jet. © 1996, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

LAN systems are widely used in distributed environment and it becomes more indispensable to manage distributed LAN systems in an integrated manner as enterprise-level networks. This paper describes the LAN fault management ensemble which has been developed by the Ensemble Team of INTAP NM (Network Management) Technical Committee. Ensembles represent specific solutions to particular problems of the networks as a collection of managed resources, functions and scenarios. This ensemble provides a method of managing an enterprise-level private network in particular fault management areas. OSI management is adopted as a platform to manage LANs which are assumed to be managed by SNMP or OSI layer management protocols. This ensemble takes a state-oriented approach which is better suited, and provides more efficient integrated network management for large-scale enterprise networks containing many resources to be managed, because SNMP management is performed by polling based on the stateless approach. In addition, this ensemble adopts international standards or publicly available specifications regarding the necessary management information. Integrated management is executed by the OSI manager and proxy agents. Proxy agents act as OSI agents and convert information gathered by SNMP manager/agents or OSI layer management entities to OSI. Various network resources such as FDDI, Ethernet and MIB-II are defined on the basis of definition of the ISO/IEC, IEEE and NM Forum standards and additional necessary resources are uniquely defined for this ensemble requirements.
