While promising results have been achieved in weakly-supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS), limited supervision from image-level tags inevitably induces discriminative reliance and spurious relations between target classes and background regions. Thus, Class Activation Map (CAM) usually tends to activate discriminative object regions and falsely includes lots of class-related backgrounds. Without pixel-level supervisions, it could be very difficult to enlarge the foreground activation and suppress those false activation of background regions. In this paper, we propose a novel framework of Cross Language Image Matching with Automatic Context Discovery (CLIMS++), based on the recently introduced Contrastive Language-Image Pre-training (CLIP) model, for WSSS. The core idea of our framework is to introduce natural language supervision to activate more complete object regions and suppress class-related background regions in CAM. In particular, we design object, background region, and text label matching losses to guide the model to excite more reasonable object regions of each category. In addition, we propose to automatically find spurious relations between foreground categories and backgrounds, through which a background suppression loss is designed to suppress the activation of class-related backgrounds. The above designs enable the proposed CLIMS++ to generate a more complete and compact activation map for the target objects. Extensive experiments on PASCAL VOC 2012 and MS COCO 2014 datasets show that our CLIMS++ significantly outperforms the previous state-of-the-art methods. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Edge computing (EC) emerges as a novel computing paradigm to offload computing tasks from user equipments (UEs) to edge notes (ENs) in fifth-generation networks, which definitely breaks the resource limitation of UEs to a certain degree. However, it is troublesome to guarantee the overall operating performance of ENs due to the uneven distributed resource demands of UEs, the resulting transmission delay and the data loss for computation offloading between the covered EN and the deployed destination EN. In view of this challenge, a blockchain-based computation offloading method, named BCO, is proposed in this paper. Technically, since blockchain is a promising technique for the decentralized system, a blockchain-based EC framework is designed to degrade the data loss possibility by integrating blockchain and EC. Then, the nondominated sorting genetic algorithm, the third version (NSGA-III), is leveraged to acquire the balanced offloading strategies. Furthermore, by taking advantage of Simple Additive Weighting and Multiple Criteria Decision Making, the optimal offloading strategy is identified. Finally, systematic experiments and analyses on the comparative experiment are conducted to verify the efficiency of our proposed method BCO. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In this paper, we investigate the performance of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted aerial communications, where a ground base station (GBS) communicates with distant terrestrial and/or aerial users through the assistance of a RIS-equipped unmanned aerial vehicle (RIS-UAV). The GBS uses the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme to transmit its signal, which is directed to the users via the RIS-UAV. First, the end-to-end channel is characterized, by considering the shadowed Rician fading, then the outage probability performance metric is derived for the underlying system model. Through numerical results, we demonstrate the impact of several system parameters on the performance of NOMA users. Specifically, we found that RIS elements need to be carefully allocated among different NOMA users, according to their channel conditions, in order to achieve the needed quality of service.

Hadoop Yarn is an open-source cluster manager responsible for resource management and job scheduling. However, data-driven applications are typically organized into workflows that consist of a series of jobs with dependencies. Yarn does not manage users' workflows and only considers the current job rather than the entire workflow when scheduling. In practice, multiple workflows share the same Yarn cluster and are pre-assigned separate Yarn resource queues to avoid mutual interference. However, this coarse-grained resource division can sometimes result in low resource utilization and increased pending time of jobs on the Yarn queue. For instance, one resource queue may have exhausted its quota while still having pending jobs, while other queues may have available resources but cannot begin executing any jobs due to unfulfilled data dependencies. To address this problem, we propose a deep reinforcement learning-based workflow scheduling scheme that takes into account job dependencies, job priorities, and dynamic resource usage. The proposed approach can intelligently identify and utilize free windows of different resource queues. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed DRL-based workflow scheduling scheme can significantly reduce the average job latency compared to existing approaches.

AlphaFold2 (AF) is a promising tool, but is it accurate enough to predict single mutation effects? Here, we report that the localized structural deformation between protein pairs differing by only 1–3 mutations—as measured by the effective strain—is correlated across 3901 experimental and AF-predicted structures. Furthermore, analysis of ∼11 000 proteins shows that the local structural change correlates with various phenotypic changes. These findings suggest that AF can predict the range and magnitude of single-mutation effects on average, and we propose a method to improve precision of AF predictions and to indicate when predictions are unreliable.

Affordance detection and pose estimation are of great importance in many robotic applications. Their combination helps the robot gain an enhanced manipulation capability, in which the generated pose can facilitate the corresponding affordance task. Previous methods for affodance-pose joint learning are limited to a predefined set of affordances, thus limiting the adaptability of robots in real-world environments. In this paper, we propose a new method for language-conditioned affordance-pose joint learning in 3D point clouds. Given a 3D point cloud object, our method detects the affordance region and generates appropriate 6-DoF poses for any unconstrained affordance label. Our method consists of an open-vocabulary affordance detection branch and a language-guided diffusion model that generates 6-DoF poses based on the affordance text. We also introduce a new high-quality dataset for the task of language-driven affordance-pose joint learning. Intensive experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method works effectively on a wide range of open-vocabulary affordances and outperforms other baselines by a large margin. SAFL: Structure-Aware Personalized Federated Learning via Client-Specific Clustering and SCSI-Guided Model Pruning

Federated Learning (FL) enables clients to collaboratively train machine learning models without sharing local data, preserving privacy in diverse environments. While traditional FL approaches preserve privacy, they often struggle with high computational and communication overhead. To address these issues, model pruning is introduced as a strategy to streamline computations. However, existing pruning methods, when applied solely based on local data, often produce sub-models that inadequately reflect clients’ specific tasks due to data insufficiency. To overcome these challenges, this paper introduces SAFL (Structure-Aware Federated Learning), a novel framework that enhances personalized federated learning through client-specific clustering and Similar Client Structure Information (SCSI)-guided model pruning. SAFL employs a two-stage process: initially, it groups clients based on data similarities and uses aggregated pruning criteria to guide the pruning process, facilitating the identification of optimal sub-models. Subsequently, clients train these pruned models and engage in server-based aggregation, ensuring tailored and efficient models for each client. This method significantly reduces computational overhead while improving inference accuracy. Extensive experiments demonstrate that SAFL markedly diminishes model size and improves performance, making it highly effective in federated environments characterized by heterogeneous data. In this paper, we propose a dynamic data transmission strategy for smart home environments that aims to optimize the Quality of Experience (QoE) by adaptively adjusting the data upload frequency based on the predicted trends in sensor data. Using the home wireless sensors monitoring dataset, we implement a deep learning model for accurate time series forecasting. In addition, an anomaly detection mechanism is used to identify critical events, requiring more frequent data uploads when important changes are detected. The QoE is quantified through a weighted average of several influencing factors, including data timeliness, timely upload of critical events, and transmission frequency. Our optimization objective is to maximize QoE while minimizing the number of transmissions, with an emphasis on reducing energy consumption through intelligent scheduling. The results demonstrate that our approach effectively balances data timeliness, transmission efficiency, and energy savings, leading to improved user satisfaction in smart home applications.

In case of sharp road illumination changes, bad weather such as rain, snow or fog, wear or missing of the lane marking, the reflective water stain on the road surface, the shadow obstruction of the tree, and mixed lane markings and other signs, missing detection or wrong detection will occur for the traditional lane marking detection algorithm. In this manuscript, a lane marking detection algorithm based on high-precision map and multisensor fusion is proposed. The basic principle of the algorithm is to use the centimeter-level high-precision positioning combined with high-precision map data to complete the detection of lane markings. In the process of generating high-precision maps or in the uncovered areas of high-precision maps, LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging) is used to estimate the curvature of the road to assist in lane marking detection. The experimental results show that the algorithm has lower false detection rate in case of bad road conditions, and the algorithm is robust. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
