In cross-domain few-shot classification, nearest centroid classifier (NCC) aims to learn representations to construct a metric space where few-shot classification can be performed by measuring the similarities between samples and the prototype of each class. An intuition behind NCC is that each sample is pulled closer to the class centroid it belongs to while pushed away from those of other classes. However, in this paper, we find that there exist high similarities between NCC-learned representations of two samples from different classes. In order to address this problem, we propose a bi-level optimization framework, maximizing optimized kernel dependence (MOKD) to learn a set of class-specific representations that match the cluster structures indicated by labeled data of the given task. Specifically, MOKD first optimizes the kernel adopted in Hilbert-Schmidt independence criterion (HSIC) to obtain the optimized kernel HSIC (opt-HSIC) that can capture the dependence more precisely. Then, an optimization problem regarding the opt-HSIC is addressed to simultaneously maximize the dependence between representations and labels and minimize the dependence among all samples. Extensive experiments on Meta-Dataset demonstrate that MOKD can not only achieve better generalization performance on unseen domains in most cases but also learn better data representation clusters. The COVID-19 virus has rapidly spread as a global pandemic, causing significant impacts on public health, economies, and daily life worldwide. Accurately and quickly predicting COVID-19 is crucial to maintaining stronger healthcare systems. This paper introduces a novel hybrid model of artificial intelligence that combines the benefits of the Variational Auto-Encoder (VAE) with the attention mechanism based on the Vision Transformer (Vi $T$ ). The novel encoder network is structured with four sequential blocks, each involving residual connections of two multiscale kernel depth-wise separable convolution (MKnDSC) modules. The mobile Vi $T$ is coupled with the V AE to serve as the classification head for predicting COVID- 19 using chest X-ray (CXR) and computed tomography (CT) scan modalities. We achieved promising classification results with overall accuracies of 96.16% and 95.42% using CXR and CT images, respectively. The proposed hybrid AI framework appears to be a practical solution, especially considering its lightweight structure of 2.15 million parameters and 0.68 FLOPs.

The advent of 5G and beyond networks is envisioned to support lower latency, higher data rates, and wider connectivity than previous cellular network generations. However, given the denser deployment of base stations (BSs) to accommodate such improvements, this results inevitably in a significant and unsustainable increase in the network’s energy consumption. Sleep Control (SC), which allows switching off some BS hardware components during light-traffic time, is considered a viable solution for greener and more energy-efficient Radio Access Networks (RAN). However, the optimization of SC is a highly challenging large-scale network combinatorial problem that depends on dynamic wireless channel conditions and varying traffic demands with stringent Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements. Driven by the benefits and efficiency of Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), which has been successfully applied to multiple wireless network optimization problems, this paper investigates DRL approaches addressing sleep control in 5G and beyond RAN. To this end, we propose a taxonomy to classify the related literature. Then, we provide an overview of the different components of the Markov Decision Process (MDP) modeling the sequential decision-making of sleep control and the applied DRL algorithms. Finally, we highlight the main challenges in existing works and suggest novel strategies to address them.

To deal with the complexity of today's engineering demands, leading universities intend to investigate educational advances and facilities to provide students a creative academic experience that integrates disciplinary knowledge and student transition to the world of the competitive job environment. By tackling a challenging design problem, the capstone project (CP) harnesses creative learning and transfer hands-on abilities into the industrial environment. Effective coaching on the understanding of course objectives aids both advisors and students to properly plan their tasks in CP design. Students and advisors must have a shared understanding of their roles and responsibilities, as well as the extent of independence anticipated from students. This study identifies specific areas in the capstone project that require direct advisor mentoring, aside with other areas in which students are anticipated to work independently, through a questionnaire survey consisting of 206 participants from both segments: advisors and final year engineering students. The survey results outline the discrepancies and consensus of perceptions amongst both segments, provide insights about current CP delivery, and highlight potential modifications that may be considered for improving the delivery of the capstone project where optimum levels of knowledge and skills are obtained by students. The results of this study serve as basis for guiding faculty members about finding the right balance of mentorship and students' independence, as students progress throughout different stages of their final year design capstone projects.

Due to the great advance in machine learning (ML) techniques, numerous ML models are expanding their application domains in recent years. To adapt for resource-constrained platforms such as mobile and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, pre-trained models are often processed to enhance their efficiency and compactness, using optimization techniques such as pruning and quantization. Similar to the optimization process in other complex systems, e.g., program compilers and databases, optimizations for ML models can contain bugs, leading to severe consequences such as system crashes and financial loss. While bugs in training, compiling and deployment stages have been extensively studied, there is still a lack of systematic understanding and characterization of model optimization bugs (MOBs). In this work, we conduct the first empirical study to identify and characterize MOBs. We collect a comprehensive dataset containing 371 MOBs from TensorFlow and PyTorch, the most extensively used open-source ML frameworks, covering the entire development time span of their optimizers (May 2019 to August 2022). We then investigate the collected bugs from various perspectives, including their symptoms, root causes, life cycles, detection and fixes. Our work unveils the status quo of MOBs in the wild, and reveals their features on which future detection techniques can be based. Our findings also serve as a warning to the developers and the users of ML frameworks, and an appeal to our research community to enact dedicated countermeasures.

An explainable deep learning approach for stock market trend prediction

Given the intricate nature of stock forecasting as well as the inherent risks and uncertainties, analysis of market trends is necessary to capitalize on optimal investment opportunities for profit maximization and timely disinvestment for loss minimization. In this work, we propose a deep learning model for predicting five distinct stock market trends: upward, downward, double top, rounded bottom, and rounded top. The proposed model surpasses common benchmarks, including support vector machine, random forest, and logistic regression, achieving an average accuracy of 94.9%, compared to 85.7% for random forest, 60.07% for support vector machine, and 52.45% for logistic regression. Furthermore the proposed model excels in F1-score, with a 94.85% performance, compared to 77.95% for random forest, 21.02% for support vector machine and 46.23% for logistic regression, across four real world diverse datasets. Additionally, we employ explainable AI (XAI) techniques, SHAP and LIME, to enhance interpretability, enabling stakeholders to understand the key factors driving predictions. The SHAP analysis reveals the top 10 most important/influential features, enabling feature reduction while maintaining performance. Interestingly, while accuracy slightly decreases with top 10 features, precision, recall, and F1-score improve, suggesting a trade-off between comprehensiveness and performance. These results demonstrate the potential for practical application in financial decision-making, providing a balance between interpretability and predictive power that can support investors in risk management and strategic planning. © 2024 The Author(s)

This paper classifies and summarises the historical literature on carousel systems in automated storage and retrieval systems in recent years. As an automated storage and retrieval system for distribution centers and production facilities, carousels facilitate the storage and dispatching of goods, significantly improving warehouse turnover efficiency. Their performance have been investigated by many scholars and experts. As carousels evolve and upgrade, more and more innovative algorithms have been used to improve the efficiency of outbound carousel storage. In this paper, we collate articles investigating how the carousel system is stored inbound versus retrieved outbound. We then discuss articles on the dual-command model of automatic storage retrieval systems as a whole. By reviewing over 50 papers, we summarise research on how to store and unload goods, focusing on the performance of automatic storage retrieval systems under dual-command conditions. On this basis, we review the current research's limitations and suggest future research directions.

We research into the clinical, biochemical and neuroimaging factors associated with the outcome of stroke patients to generate a predictive model using machine learning techniques for prediction of mortality and morbidity 3‑months after admission. The dataset consisted of patients with ischemic stroke (IS) and non‑traumatic intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) admitted to Stroke Unit of a European Tertiary Hospital prospectively registered. We identified the main variables for machine learning Random Forest (RF), generating a predictive model that can estimate patient mortality/ morbidity according to the following groups: (1) IS + ICH, (2) IS, and (3) ICH. A total of 6022 patients were included: 4922 (mean age 71.9 ± 13.8 years) with IS and 1100 (mean age 73.3 ± 13.1 years) with ICH. NIHSS at 24, 48 h and axillary temperature at admission were the most important variables to consider for evolution of patients at 3‑months. IS + ICH group was the most stable for mortality prediction [0.904 ± 0.025 of area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC)]. IS group presented similar results, although variability between experiments was slightly higher (0.909 ± 0.032 of AUC). ICH group was the one in which RF had more problems to make adequate predictions (0.9837 vs. 0.7104 of AUC). There were no major differences between IS and IS + ICH groups according to morbidity prediction (0.738 and 0.755 of AUC) but, after checking normality with a Shapiro Wilk test with the null hypothesis that the data follow a normal distribution, it was rejected with W = 0.93546 (p‑value © 2024, CC BY.

The proliferation of digital health technologies has led to an abundance of personal health data. However, querying and retrieving specific health-related information from disparate sources can be challenging and inconvenient, particularly for older individuals unfamiliar with technology. While ChatGPT offers a conversational interface, it lacks domain-specific knowledge, including personalized health information. To address this limitation, we present a novel approach that combines a knowledge graph and GPT to enable personalized health queries. Our solution utilizes a personal knowledge graph as a comprehensive knowledge source and fine-tunes GPT to provide accurate responses. We have implemented a voice assistant mobile app incorporating this knowledge graph-assisted GPT model and conducted initial feasibility testing.
