The number of possible melodies is unfathomably large, yet despite this virtually unlimited potential for melodic variation, melodies from different societies can be surprisingly similar. The motor constraint hypothesis accounts for certain similarities, such as scalar motion and contour shape, but not for other major common features, such as repetition, song length, and scale size. Here we investigate the role of information constraints arising from limitations on human memory in shaping these hallmarks of melodies. We measure determinants of information rate in 62 corpora of Folk melodies spanning several continents, finding multiple trade-offs that all act to constrain the information rate across societies. By contrast, 39 corpora of Art music from Europe (including Turkey) show longer, more complex melodies, and increased complexity over time, suggesting different cultural-evolutionary selection pressures in Art and Folk music, possibly due to the use of written versus oral transmission. Our parameter-free model predicts the empirical scale degree distribution using information constraints on scalar motion, melody length, and, most importantly, information rate. This provides strong evidence that information constraints during cultural transmission of music limit the number of notes in a scale, and proposes that preference for intermediate melodic complexity is a fundamental constraint on the cultural evolution of melody. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

Few-shot semantic segmentation uses a few annotated data of a specific class in the support set to segment the target of the same class in the query set. Most existing approaches fail to perform well when there are significant intra-class variances. This paper alleviates the problem by concentrating on mining the query image and using the support set as supplementary information. First, it proposes a Query Prototype Generation Module to generate a query foreground prototype from the query features. Specifically, we use both prototype-level and pixel-level similarity matching to generate two complementary initial prototypes, which we then integrate to create a discriminative query foreground prototype. Second, we propose a Support Auxiliary Refinement Module to further guide the final precise prediction of the query image by leveraging the target category information of the support set through step-by-step mining. Specifically, we generate a query-support mixture prototype based on the support prototype representation obtained using the attention mechanism. Then we generate a support supplement prototype to complement the missing information by encoding over the foreground regions that the query-support mixture prototype fails to segment out. Extensive experiments on PASCAL-5i and COCO-20i demonstrate that our model outperforms the prior works of few-shot segmentation. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Learning Hierarchical Graph Representation for Image Manipulation Detection

The objective of image manipulation detection is to identify and locate the manipulated regions in the images. Recent approaches mostly adopt the sophisticated Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to capture the tampering artifacts left in the images to locate the manipulated regions. However, these approaches ignore the feature correlations, i.e., feature inconsistencies, between manipulated regions and non-manipulated regions, leading to inferior detection performance. To address this issue, we propose a hierarchical Graph Convolutional Network (HGCN-Net), which consists of two parallel branches: the backbone network branch and the hierarchical graph representation learning (HGRL) branch for image manipulation detection. Specifically, the feature maps of a given image are extracted by the backbone network branch, and then the feature correlations within the feature maps are modeled as a set of fully-connected graphs for learning the hierarchical graph representation by the HGRL branch. The learned hierarchical graph representation can sufficiently capture the feature correlations across different scales, and thus it provides high discriminability for distinguishing manipulated and non-manipulated regions. Extensive experiments on four public datasets demonstrate that the proposed HGCN-Net not only provides promising detection accuracy, but also achieves strong robustness under a variety of common image attacks in the task of image manipulation detection, compared to the state-of-the-arts. software testing is very important in software development to ensure its quality and reliability. As software systems have become more complex, the number of test cases has increased, which presents the challenge of executing all the tests in a limited time frame. Various test case prioritization techniques have been introduced to solve this problem. These methods aim to identify and implement the most critical tests first. In this paper, we propose an implementation of a dynamic test case prioritization strategy to improve software quality by increasing code coverage with special attention to edge case handling. Edge case test prioritization is a technique that improves test efficiency by selecting extreme case scenarios that can reveal critical bugs or unexpected behavior early in development, improving overall software reliability and dependability. In order to prioritize test cases, this paper presents a regression-based method that makes use of machine learning algorithms. The approach leverages previous performance data to optimize regression testing efficiency by examining variables like test time and execution status. Performance evaluations, when compared against industry standards and cutting-edge techniques, show how effective these algorithms are at correctly prioritizing test cases and identifying faults. This study offers simplified yet reliable solutions for regression testing optimization by shedding light on the efficacy of regression algorithms, such as Random Forest and decision trees.

The Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm is drastically changing our world by making everyday objects an integral part of the Internet. This transformation is increasingly being adopted in the healthcare sector, where Smart Hospitals are now relying on IoT technologies to track staff, patients, devices, and equipment, both within a hospital and beyond. This paradigm opens the door to new innovations for creating novel types of interactions among objects, services, and people in smarter ways to enhance the quality of patient services and the efficient utilisation of resources. However, the realisation of real-time IoT applications in healthcare and, ultimately, the development of Smart Hospitals are constrained by their current Cloud-based computing environment. Edge computing emerged as a new computing model that harnesses edge-based resources alongside Clouds for real-time IoT applications. It helps to capitalise on the potential economic impact of the IoT paradigm of $11 trillion per year, with a trillion IoT devices deployed by 2025 to sense, manage and monitor the hospital systems in real-time. This vision paper proposes new algorithms and software systems to tackle important challenges in Edge computing-enabled Smart Hospitals, including how to manage and execute diverse real-time IoT applications and how to meet their diverse and strict Quality of Service (QoS) requirements in hospital settings. High-resolution pathological images play a pivotal role in accurate disease diagnosis and are important in precision medicine. However, obtaining real-time high-resolution images faces challenges due to hardware limitations and scanning time constraints. Conventional image super-resolution restoration algorithms struggle to provide satisfactory results for pathological images, resulting in blurred and unrealistic restorations. In response to this challenge, this research proposes a pioneering approach by integrating Internet of Things (IoT) technology with Local Attention Dual Network (IOT-LAT) for super-resolution restoration of pathological images. The enhanced IOT-LATincorporates IoT-based data acquisition and processing, IoT-Enhanced non-local attention mechanisms, Gaussian constraint, and parameter-sharing strategies in up-sampling and down-sampling branches. This integration enables real-time super-resolution restoration of pathological images with improved accuracy. The reconstructed images exhibit a structural similarity of 0.914 and a peak signal-to-noise ratio of 30.84 dB. These results validate the effectiveness of the suggested approach in precisely reconstructing high-frequency details and improving modelling efficiency via a lightweight non-local attention mechanism enhanced by the Internet of Things. This work discusses IoT and non-local attention dual networks to improve pathological image super-resolution restoration. This allows for faster and more accurate disease diagnosis and treatment in precision medicine. © 2024 The Authors

Simulink has been widely used in system design, which supports the efficient modeling and synthesis of embedded controllers, with automatic test case generation to simulate and validate the correctness of the constructed Simulink model. However, the increasing complexity of the model, especially the internal states, brings extra challenges to existing model testing techniques such as constraint solving and random search, which results in difficulties when trying to reach the deeper logic of the model *** this paper, we propose STCG, a state-aware test case generation method for Simulink models. STCG solves only one iteration of the model each time to get the test input that can cover a target branch, then executes the model once to obtain and update the novel model state based on the solved input dynamically. Then, it solves the remaining branches based on the new model state iteratively until all the coverage requirements are satisfied. We implemented STCG and evaluated it on several benchmark Simulink models. Compared to the built-in Simulink Design Verifier and state-of-the-art academic work SimCoTest, STCG achieves an average improvement of 58% and 132% on Decision Coverage, 52% and 70% on Condition Coverage and 239% and 237% on Modified Condition Decision Coverage, respectively.

With the advance of AI, road object detection has been a prominent topic in computer vision, mostly using perspective cameras. Fisheye lens provides omnidirectional wide coverage for using fewer cameras to monitor road intersections, however with view distortions. To our knowledge, there is no existing open dataset prepared for traffic surveillance on fisheye cameras. This paper introduces an open FishEye8K benchmark dataset for road object detection tasks, which comprises 157K bounding boxes across five classes (Pedestrian, Bike, Car, Bus, and Truck). In addition, we present benchmark results of State-of-The-Art (SoTA) models, including variations of YOLOv5, YOLOR, YOLO7, and YOLOv8. The dataset comprises 8,000 images recorded in 22 videos using 18 fisheye cameras for traffic monitoring in Hsinchu, Taiwan, at resolutions of 1080×1080 and 1280×1280. The data annotation and validation process were arduous and time-consuming, due to the ultra-wide panoramic and hemispherical fisheye camera images with large distortion and numerous road participants, particularly people riding scooters. To avoid bias, frames from a particular camera were assigned to either the training or test sets, maintaining a ratio of about 70:30 for both the number of images and bounding boxes in each class. Experimental results show that YOLOv8 and YOLOR outperform on input sizes 640×640 and 1280×1280, respectively. The dataset will be available on the GitHub link with PASCAL VOC, MS COCO, and YOLO annotation formats. The FishEye8K benchmark will provide significant contributions to the fisheye video analytics and smart city applications.
