Functional dependencies are a popular and useful extension to Haskell style type classes. In this paper, we give a reformulation of functional dependencies in terms of Constraint Handling Rules (CHRs). In previous work, CHRs have been employed for describing user-programmable type extensions in the context of Haskell style type classes. Here, we make use of CHRs to provide for the first time a concise result that under some sufficient conditions, functional dependencies allow for sound and decidable type inference. The sufficient conditions imposed on functional dependencies can be very limiting. We show how to safely relax these conditions. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

One goal for future Mars missions is to navigate a rover to science targets not visible to the rover, but seen in orbital or descent images. In order to support and improve long-range navigation capabilities, we generate 3D terrain maps using all available images, including surface images from the lander and/or rover, descent images from the lander, and orbital images from current and future Mars orbiters. The techniques used include wide-baseline stereo mapping for terrain distant from the rover, bundle adjustment for high-accuracy mapping of surface images, and structure-from-motion techniques for mapping using descent and orbital images. The terrain maps are compiled using a system for unifying multi-resolution models and integrating three-dimensional terrains.

software architects have techniques to deal with many quality attributes such as performance, reliability, and maintainability. Usability, however, has traditionally been concerned primarily with presentation and not been a concern of software architects beyond separating the user interface from the remainder of the application. In this paper, we present usability-supporting architectural patterns. Each pattern describes a usability concern that is not supported by separation alone. For each concern, a usability-supporting architectural pattern provides the forces from the characteristics of the task and environment, the human, and the state of the software to motivate an implementation independent solution cast in terms of the responsibilities that must be fulfilled to satisfy the forces. Furthermore, each pattern includes a sample solution implemented in the context of an overriding separation based pattern such as J2EE Model View Controller.

在大规模科学计算中，对整个系统性能评估的正确与否已经越来越成为成功掏建系统不可小视的一环，现代超级计算机(千亿次，万亿次)的性能测试与评估最常用的一个测试基准程序就是所谓的LINPACK。当今超级计算界的TOP500排名也主要是基于LINPACK峰值的，但我们在实际应用中发现，LINPACK峰值高并不等于超级计算机/并行机的利用率/并行效率一定也高。本文指出了LINPACK测试程序包自身的局限性，进而提出一个大规模科学计算性能测试与评估的FFT标准,并对影响并行FFT算法性能的一些主要因素进行分析，结合一套完善的软件包“FFTH”以满足此类需求。

Most educators are familiar with copyright and fair use practices. However, there are new considerations for copyright and fair use on the web. Copyright includes seven different categories, many of which are applicable to presentations and papers on the web. The seven categories are: 1) literary works; 2) musical works, including words; 3) dramatic works, including music; 4) pantomimes and choreographic works; 5) pictorial, graphic and sculptural works; 6) motion pictures and audiovisual works; and 7) sound recordings. Educators need to become aware of the implications of using any of these seven categories on the web. Other issues pertaining to law are patents, trademarks and trade *** educators need to become aware of the new laws pertaining to copyright. The 1996 Telecommunications Act and the 1998 Digital Millenium Act are important for their implications for copyright. The newest TEACH act has implications for on-line and web courses. Some of the newest information concerning both of these acts shows that there may be some contradiction between the two. In addition, computing educators need to be aware of laws pertaining to access, privacy and accessibility when providing course material on the web. These issues are extremely important for not only copyright issues, but also for personal privacy issues. How the emerging technologies affect how we teach and what we are doing with our materials is important for all educators to *** workshop will examine the various copyright, law and ethical considerations, particularly as they pertain to the internet. Particular examples will be given using classroom scenarios. On-line documents, labs and other materials will be examined for use on the web pertaining to law, ethics and copyright issues. Based on business processes, composite Web services combine the offerings of two or more Web services to achieve the desired business goals. Several candidate standards have been proposed, providing a foundation for composite Web service specifications. However, at a higher level, there is no framework that supports composite Web service construction and automation. We propose a framework that facilitates the visual design, validation and automation of composite Web services. The framework is based mainly on Web service composition graph (WSCG), the underlying formalism for composite Web services. Using graph grammar and graph transformation defined on WSCG, the static topological structure of a composite Web service can be described in an intuitive way and the automation of the constructed composite Web services is also facilitated with a sound formal semantic basis. We also outline the design and implementation of a prototype for the proposed framework. © 2003 IEEE.

Rule quality for multiple-rule classifier: Empirical expertise and theoretical methodology

A rule-inducing learning algorithm may yield either an ordered or unordered set of decision rules. The latter seems to be more understandable by humans and directly applicable in most expert systems or decision-supporting ones. However, classification utilizing the unordered-mode decision rules may be accompanied by some conflict situations, particularly when several rules belonging to different classes match ('fire' for) an input to-be-classified (unseen) object. One of the possible solutions to this conflict is to associate each decision rule induced by a learning algorithm with a numerical factor which is commonly called the rule quality. The paper first surveys empirical and statistical formulas of the rule quality and compares their characteristics. Statistical tools such as contingency tables, measures of association, measures of agreement are introduced as suitable vehicles for depicting a behaviour of a decision rule. The above formulas as well as schemes for their combinations are experimentally tested on several well-known AI databases and compared. The covering learning algorithm CN4, a large extension of CN2, is used as an inductive vehicle. After that, theoretical methodology for defining rule qualities and schemes for their combination is acquainted. The general definitions of the notions of a Designer, Learner, and Classifier are presented in a formal matter, including parameters that are usually attached to these concepts such as rule consistency, completeness, quality, matching rate, etc. Hence, we provide the minimum-requirement definitions as necessary conditions for the above concepts. Any designer (decision-system builder) of a new multiple-rule system may start with these minimum requirements. We conclude with a general flow chart for a decision-system builder. He/she can just pursue it and select parameters of a Learner and Classifier, following the minimum characteristics provided. © 2003-IOS Press.

SWENET: The Network Community for software engineering Education is an NSF funded project to develop curriculum modules of value to faculty member's desiring to incorporate software engineering concepts in new or existing courses. By design, the modules are self-contained instructional units ranging from a single lecture to approximately one week of course material;in this way, instructors can adopt, adapt, and arrange modules as appropriate to their courses. The original goal was to provide appropriate coverage at the undergraduate level for the areas defined in the software engineering Body of Knowledge. Recently the focus has shifted to the more focused software engineering Education Body of Knowledge developed as part of the computing Curricula - software engineering effort. As such, SWENET is evolving to become a repository of course modules that can support a wide range of educational approaches within the general framework defined by these bodies of knowledge. © 2003 IEEE.

The increasing complexity, heterogeneity and dynamism of networks, systems, services applications have made our computational/information infrastructure brittle, unmanageable and insecure. This has necessitated the investigation of a new paradigm for design, development and deployment based on strategies used by biological systems to deal with complexity, heterogeneity, and uncertainty, i.e. autonomic computing. This paper introduces the AutoMate project and describes its key components. The overall objective of AutoMate is to investigate key technologies to enable the development of autonomic grid applications that are context aware and are capable of self-configuring, self-composing, self-optimizing and self-adapting. Specifically, it will investigate the definition of autonomic components, the development of autonomic applications as dynamic composition of autonomic components, and the design of key enhancements to existing grid middleware and runtime services to support these applications. © 2003 IEEE.
