Open Multithreaded Transactions form an advanced transaction model that provides features for controlling and structuring not only accesses to objects, as usual in transaction systems, but also threads taking part in transactions. The model allows several threads to enter the same transaction in order to perform a joint activity. It provides a flexible way of manipulating threads executing inside a transaction by allowing them to be forked and terminated, but it restricts their behavior in order to guarantee correctness of transaction nesting and isolation among transactions. In addition, transactions are exception handling contexts, and the model therefore provides forward and backward error recovery. In this paper we show that the model is indeed powerful, and that a complex application, i.e. an online auction system, can be designed and implemented in a very elegant way.

As part of software Technology and engineering Practice (STEP) 2002 conference, the 2nd International Workshop on Adoption-Centric software engineering (ACSE 2002) was held in Montreal, Canada on Oct. 6-7, 2002. This report summarizes the ACSE 2002 workshop and provides a tentative roadmap towards addressing some of the challenges related to technology transition. In particular, the paper highlights the workshop's focus on adoption issues in the context of moving software reverse engineering tools from research prototypes to widely used products.

In applications such as scientific and medical visualization, highly detailed polygonal meshes are needed. Rendering these polygonal meshes usually exceeds the capabilities of graphics hardware. To improve rendering efficiency and maintain proper interactivity, the polygonal mesh simplification technique is commonly used to reduce the number of polygons of the mesh and construct a multiresolution representation. We propose a new and simple constraint scheme based on the quadric error metric proposed by Garland and Heckbert (1997, 1998) to preserve face colors and boundary edges during the simplification process. In addition, our method generates progressive meshes that store the polygonal mesh in a continuous multi-resolution representation. According to our experimental results, this new method is successful in preserving face colors and boundary edges. Moreover, we compare the latency of resolution changes for progressive meshes of various models.

Overlap of computations and communications is an effective mechanism to improve the performance of parallel/distributed applications significantly. This overlap can be achieved efficiently by using data partitioning and properly scheduling the data transfer. Various asynchronous communication primitives, that are provided by most message passing tools (e.g. PVM, MPI), can be used to implement the required. Here, we present a design model, the Distributed software Design Model (DSDM) and show how it can be applied to optimize parallel/distributed applications. We show through several examples, the Master-Slave Merge Sorting Application and the astrophysical N-Body Problem, how the DSDM can be used to develop efficient and optimized implementations of parallel and distributed algorithms.

Two of the fundamental issues in message passing between mobile agents are tracking the migration of the target agent and delivering messages to it. In order to provide reliable message delivery, protocols are needed to overcome message loss caused by asynchronous operations of agent migration and message forwarding. In this paper, two message forwarding approaches, namely push and pull, are explored to design adaptive and reliable message delivery protocols. The pros and cons of these two approaches are evaluated, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The comparative performance evaluation is in terms of network traffic and delay in message processing. We also propose improvements to the pull approach to reduce network traffic and the message delay. We conclude that with different communication and migration patterns and requirements of real-time message processing, specific applications can select different message delivery approaches to achieve the desired level of performance and flexibility.

In response to the need to define the academic requirements for licensing professional engineers in Canada, the Canadian engineering Qualifications Board formed a committee whose mandate was to define the core and supplemental bodies of knowledge for software engineering. Some of the issues and the outcome of the software engineering committee's deliberations are presented in this paper. After examining a number of inputs including national and provincial examination syllabi and curricula of accredited software engineering programs in Canada, a number of core topic areas were defined. These are: discrete mathematics, data structures and algorithms, software development (includes software engineering process, requirements design, construction, testing, maintenance, and configuration management), system reliability and safety, digital systems, computer architecture, operating systems, file and database, and systems and control. these topics generally match well with the existing examination syllabi and curricula. the supplemental areas are less well-defined and include depth in core subjects, depth in areas of specialization, and breadth in application domains.

For many years, research results in requirements engineering (RE) have been developed without much interaction with, or impact on, industrial practice. Why is it so difficult to introduce RE research results into mainstream RE practice? This paper attempts to provide answers to this question by describing obstacles that researchers and practitioners have encountered when they attempted technology transfer. In addition, major incentives for using RE methods are discussed, along with ideas for improving current RE practice. The paper summarises, clarifies and extends the results of two panel discussions, one at the Twelfth Conference on Advanced information Systems engineering (CAiSE'00) and the other at the Fourth IEEE Conference on Requirements engineering (ICRE'00). © 2002 Springer-Verlag London Limited.

As software agents get more sophisticated, it becomes difficult to understand and model such systems. This paper contends that all developers bring to the task of development some implicit or explicit assumptions of the agent communication pattern. This issue is not readily addressed in current literature and represents a gap in knowledge. For this purpose, a generic pattern of inter-agent communication is introduced and discussed in this paper. For better understanding and modelling of agent-based e-commerce systems, the semiotic approach and the DEMO transaction concept are briefly introduced. It is shown that the semiotic approach offers a unifying framework for identifying the roles of agents, the responsible human agents and the right/constraints associated with each role. The DEMO transaction concept is applied to model the communicative interaction between agents.

μCRL [13] is a language for specifying and verifying distributed systems in an algebraic fashion. It targets the specification of system behaviour in a process-algebraic style and of data elements in the form of abstract data types. The μCRL toolset [21] (see http://***/~mcrl) supports the analysis and manipulation of μCRL specifications. A μCRL specification can be automatically transformed into a linear process operator (LPO). All other tools in the μCRL toolset use LPOs as their starting point. The simulator allows the interactive simulation of an LPO. There are a number of tools that allow optimisations on the level of LPOs. The instantiator generates a labelled transition system (LTS) from an LPO (under the condition that it is finite-state), and the resulting LTS can be visualised, analysed and minimised.

Caching issues in meta-search engines are considered. We propose a popularity-driven cache algorithm that utilizes both popularities and reference counters of queries to determine cache data to be purged. We show how to calculate query popularity. Empirical evaluations and performance comparisons of popularity-driven caching with the least recently used (LRU) and least frequently used (LFU) schemes have been carried out on collections of real data. In almost all cases, the proposed replacement policy outperforms LRU and LFU. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.
