Web phishing is a prevalent online attack in which victims are tricked into revealing their personal information by visiting fraudulent websites. Phishers often use URL shortening tools to disguise malicious links, making it easier to steal sensitive data such as usernames, passwords, and banking details. These phishing websites are designed to mimic legitimate ones, making detection more challenging. As phishing techniques continue to evolve rapidly alongside technological advancements, the need for effective anti-phishing systems has become increasingly crucial. Machine learning has emerged as a powerful tool for recognizing and mitigating phishing scams. This article provides a comprehensive overview of machine learning techniques for phishing detection and their effectiveness in combating online threats.

Beyond Pixel-Wise Supervision for Medical Image Segmentation: From Traditional Models to Foundation Models

Medical image segmentation plays an important role in many image-guided clinical approaches. However, existing segmentation algorithms mostly rely on the availability of fully annotated images with pixel-wise annotations for training, which can be both labor-intensive and expertise-demanding, especially in the medical imaging domain where only experts can provide reliable and accurate annotations. To alleviate this challenge, there has been a growing focus on developing segmentation methods that can train deep models with weak annotations, such as image-level, bounding boxes, scribbles, and points. The emergence of vision foundation models, notably the Segment Anything Model (SAM), has introduced innovative capabilities for segmentation tasks using weak annotations for promptable segmentation enabled by large-scale pre-training. Adopting foundation models together with traditional learning methods has increasingly gained recent interest research community and shown potential for real-world applications. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey of recent progress on annotation-efficient learning for medical image segmentation utilizing weak annotations before and in the era of foundation models. Furthermore, we analyze and discuss several challenges of existing approaches, which we believe will provide valuable guidance for shaping the trajectory of foundational models to further advance the field of medical image segmentation. The rise of high-risk AI systems has led to escalating concerns, prompting regulatory efforts such as the recently approved EU AI Act. In this context, the development of responsible AI systems is crucial. To this end, trustworthy AI techniques aim at requirements (including transparency, privacy awareness and fairness) that contribute to the development of responsible, robust and safe AI systems. Among them, Federated Learning (FL) has emerged as a key approach to safeguarding data privacy while enabling the collaborative training of AI models. However, FL is prone to adversarial attacks, particularly byzantine attacks, which aim to modify the behavior of the model. This work addresses this issue by proposing an eXplainable and Impartial Dynamic Defense against Byzantine Attacks (XI-DDaBA). This defense mechanism relies on robust aggregation operators and filtering techniques to mitigate the effects of adversarial attacks in FL, while providing explanations for its decisions and ensuring that clients with poor data quality are not discriminated. Experimental simulations are discussed to assess the performance of XI-DDaBA against other baselines from the literature, and to showcase its provided explanations. Overall, XI-DDaBA aligns with the need for responsible AI systems in high-risk collaborative learning scenarios through the explainable and impartial provision of robustness against attacks.

Various deep learning techniques have been employed to diagnose dental caries using X-ray images. In this study, we utilized deep learning models, including Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and transfer learning models such as Visual Geometry Group (VGG16), VGG19, ResNet50, and Inception V3, to identify dental caries in periapical radiographs. The traditional CNN model comprises three sets of 2D convolutional layers, followed by an activation layer, a max-pooling layer, a flatten layer, one dense layer, another activation layer, dropout, another dense layer, and a final activation layer. For the VGG models, ResNet50, and Inception V3, the top convolutional layers were frozen to prevent retraining of the model, with only the last layers trained to produce the required output. The accuracy achieved by CNN, VGG16, VGG19, ResNet50, and Inception V3 was 90%, 96%, 73%, 70%, and 73%, respectively. VGG16 exhibited the highest accuracy among the models. Hyperparameters were carefully selected using a grid search approach, and the results were validated using the Shuffle-Split-Cross (SSC) validation method. These findings underscore the effectiveness of transfer learning in analyzing medical images, particularly in the diagnosis of dental caries. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

With the rapid development of big data and artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles (AV) have achieved great success in diverse application domains. Although the current development of autonomous driving technology has been greatly improved, the accident rate of driverless vehicles still rises. Therefore, how to ensure the quality of AVs using different testing technologies has become an important issue. Traditional testing approaches such as decision tables and state charts struggle with diversified test inputs. Hence, there is a strong demand for new test models for AV testing. In this paper, we present a model-based testing framework that utilizes semantic trees and 3-dimensional (3D) test tables to model driving scenarios into individual test cases. Using the proposed framework, we generate fine-grained examples corresponding to the real world. Also, we evaluate the behavior of the Apollo AV system in 30 scenarios in SVL simulator. The results show that the scenarios generated by our framework can cover most conditions occurring, thus addressing the challenge of testing AVs for safety and reliability.

This study introduces an AI-driven customized mental health monitoring system that uses machine learning (ML) and natural language processing (NLP) to provide ongoing mental health evaluation and assistance. The system uses user-generated textual data, including journal entries, chat logs, and social media postings, to assess emotional states, stress levels, and mental health issues. The system uses sophisticated natural language processing methods to identify linguistic patterns associated with mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and others. The machine learning algorithms customize monitoring by adjusting to the unique characteristics of each user and use past data to provide customized suggestions and preemptive alerts. The technology aims to enhance human interaction and function as a proactive tool in mental health treatment by providing real-time information. The system extracts emotional indicators from textual input using sentiment analysis methods and pre-trained natural language processing models such as BERT. The results are used with user demographics and history to build machine learning classifiers, such as Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Machine (SVM), which predict mental health disorders. Supervised learning is used to develop the model, and suggestions are progressively improved using a tailored feedback system. The SVM and RF algorithms demonstrated an 88% and 92%accuracy rate in forecasting mood swings and early warning indicators of mental health disorders when evaluated on a set of anonymized mental health information. The 30% increase in user involvement demonstrated the efficacy of tailored suggestions in proactive mental health treatment.

Concealing Sensitive Samples against Gradient Leakage in Federated Learning

Federated Learning (FL) is a distributed learning paradigm that enhances users’ privacy by eliminating the need for clients to share raw, private data with the server. Despite the success, recent studies expose the vulnerability of FL to model inversion attacks, where adversaries reconstruct users’ private data via eavesdropping on the shared gradient information. We hypothesize that a key factor in the success of such attacks is the low entanglement among gradients per data within the batch during stochastic optimization. This creates a vulnerability that an adversary can exploit to reconstruct the sensitive data. Building upon this insight, we present a simple, yet effective defense strategy that obfuscates the gradients of the sensitive data with concealed samples. To achieve this, we propose synthesizing concealed samples to mimic the sensitive data at the gradient level while ensuring their visual dissimilarity from the actual sensitive data. Compared to the previous art, our empirical evaluations suggest that the proposed technique provides the strongest protection while simultaneously maintaining the FL performance. Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) is a new computing paradigm that enables cloud computing and information technology (IT) services to be delivered at the network’s edge. By shifting the load of cloud computing to individual local servers, MEC helps meet the requirements of ultralow latency, localized data processing, and extends the potential of Internet of Things (IoT) for end-users. However, the crosscutting nature of MEC and the multidisciplinary components necessary for its deployment have presented additional security and privacy concerns. Fortunately, Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms can cope with excessively unpredictable and complex data, which offers a distinct advantage in dealing with sophisticated and developing adversaries in the security industry. Hence, in this paper we comprehensively provide a survey of security and privacy in MEC from the perspective of AI. On the one hand, we use European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) MEC reference architecture as our based framework while merging the software Defined Network (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) to better illustrate a serviceable platform of MEC. On the other hand, we focus on new security and privacy issues, as well as potential solutions from the viewpoints of AI. Advances in intensive care have improved the survival rate of patients with severe acute brain injury, but diagnostic errors for patients with disorders of consciousness are still high. Accurate diagnosis of these patients is very important because effective treatment can vary depending on the diagnosis. In this study, we propose a framework for classifying unresponsive wakefulness syndrome and minimally conscious state, focusing on awareness. In particular, power spectral density and common spatial patterns were used together, considering that spatial information is a key feature in consciousness. The 16 patients with unresponsive wakefulness syndrome and 14 with minimally conscious state underwent resting-state electroencephalography measurements. In addition, we compared the performance by utilizing each frequency (delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma bands) related to consciousness. As a result, the highest accuracy of 95.06% was achieved by the EEGNet classifier, especially in the beta frequency band. We demonstrated that spatial information is very important in consciousness, as we observed that classification performance improved when common spatial patterns were used. These results provide insight into various frameworks for diagnosing patients with disorders of consciousness and may help patients survive by increasing the diagnosis rate in the future. © 2025 IEEE.
