The rising use of IoT devices in Public Health Information Systems (PHIS) has revolutionized the way patient surveillance and record keeping is being done in real-time, but this has exposed systems to serious cybersecurity threats. Generated by using traditional approaches, like rule-based detection and basic artificial neural network-based models, is not capable of dealing with the dynamic and diverse nature of threats in IoT networks. These approaches are often inadequate in providing a detailed analysis of the attack especially because they do not have the ability to learn from sequences of features. This work presents an improved predictive analytics model using CNN with BiLSTM to improve cybersecurity in IoT connected PHIS. The CNN component performs feature extraction on spatial elements in the data received while the BiLSTM uncovers temporal dependencies and sequence of attacks, which enhance threats identification accuracy. The process of the proposed methodology includes dataset acquisition and cleansing of IoT healthcare datasets and finally, the training and testing of the model with the help of relevant parameter such as accuracy, precision, and recall values. Qualitative comparison with the baseline models also shows that the proposed hybrid CNN-BiLSTM model performs better, and it has fewer false alarms to detect a range of cyber threats. Accordingly, the results point to a feasible solution for enhancing security and reliability of IoT-based healthcare applications to protect patients’ record from cyber threats.

Detecting anomalies for key performance indicator (KPI) data is of paramount importance to ensure the quality and reliability of network services. However, building the anomaly detection system for KPI is challenging due to the scarcity of abnormal labels and highly dynamic or even unseen patterns. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised KPI anomaly detection framework named PRAD by jointly optimizing prediction-based and reconstruction-based modules. Specifically, PRAD employs two parallel graph attention networks (GATs) to learn metric-oriented and time-oriented relationships. A temporal convolutional attention network (TCAN) is used to capture complex long-term dependencies. Furthermore, to tackle the overfitting issue in the variational auto-encoder (VAE), PRAD designs a reconstruction-based module that combines VAE with a generative adversarial network (GAN). The experimental results on the two public datasets demonstrate that the proposed PRAD outperforms existing anomaly detection methods. © 2022 IEEE.

Robots that operate autonomously require a path planner that ensures the robot reaches the desired position in a safe manner. The robot will be able to achieve greater speeds along the path if the path is smooth, minimizing the effort of the controller. This work presents two new path planners, called DE-Spline and DE-NURBS. These planners provide a smooth path directly by the cost function optimization using the algorithm L-SHADE (Success-History based Adaptive of Differential Evolution using linear population size reduction algorithm) and two path’s parametrization: Ferguson cubic spline and NURBS. Additionally, it ensures that the robot reaches the target in the desired orientation. The planners are compared with a Vector Field-based planner, widely used in robot soccer. Based on the results, it has been found that both planners provide a smoother path along the shortest path, by accounting for the robot’s starting angle and its goal angle. Furthermore, DE-NURBS provides a greater degree of planning freedom than DESpline.

Developing Amharic Sign Language Recognition Model for Amharic Characters Using Deep Learning Approach

Hearing-impaired people use Sign Language to communicate with each other as well as with other communities. Usually, they are unable to communicate with normal people. Most of the people without hearing disability do not understand the Sign Language and unable to understand hearing-impaired people. So, they need recognition of Sign Language to text. In this research, a model is optimized for the recognition of Amharic Sign Language to Amharic characters. A convolutional neural network model is trained on datasets gathered from a teacher of Amharic Sign Language. Frame extraction from Amharic Sign Language video, labeling and annotation, XML creation, generate TFrecord, and training models are major general steps followed for developing models to recognize Amharic Sign Language to characters. After training of the neural network is completed, the model is saved for recognition of Sign Language from a video system or from the frame of video. The accuracy of the model is the summation of confidence of individual alphabets correctly recognized divided by the number of alphabets presented for evaluation for Faster R-CNN and SSD. Hence, the mean average accuracy of the Faster R-CNN and Single-Shot Detector is found to be 98. 25% and 96 % respectively. The model is trained and evaluated for the character of the Amharic language. The research will continue to include the remaining words and sentence used in Amharic Sign Language to have a full-fledged Sign Language recognition model to a complete system. © 2021, CC BY.

Popular convolutional neural networks mainly use paired images in a supervised way for image watermark removal. However, watermarked images do not have reference images in the real world, which results in poor robustness of image watermark removal techniques. In this paper, we propose a self-supervised convolutional neural network (CNN) in image watermark removal (SWCNN). SWCNN uses a self-supervised way to construct reference watermarked images rather than given paired training samples, according to watermark distribution. A heterogeneous U-Net architecture is used to extract more complementary structural information via simple components for image watermark removal. Taking into account texture information, a mixed loss is exploited to improve visual effects of image watermark removal. Besides, a watermark dataset is conducted. Experimental results show that the proposed SWCNN is superior to popular CNNs in image watermark removal. Codes can be obtained at https://***/hellloxiaotian/SWCNN. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Analyzing and evaluating students' progress in any learning environment is stressful and time consuming if done using traditional analysis methods. This is further exasperated by the increasing number of students due to the shift of focus toward integrating the Internet technologies in education and the focus of academic institutions on moving toward e-Learning, blended, or online learning models. As a result, the topic of student performance prediction has become a vibrant research area in recent years. To address this, machine learning and data mining techniques have emerged as a viable solution. To that end, this work proposes the use of deep learning techniques (CNN and RNN-LSTM) to predict the students' performance at the midpoint stage of the online course delivery using three distinct datasets collected from three different regions of the world. Experimental results show that deep learning models have promising performance as they outperform other optimized traditional ML models in two of the three considered datasets while also having comparable performance for the third dataset.

Cutting force is a key factor in machining processes. Cutting force similarity is required for several important issues, namely: stability evaluation, process control, and process parameter setting. This study employed a long short-term memory (LSTM) with Siamese architecture to measure the similarity of the cutting forces in a milling process. The Siamese LSTM was trained with time series data of the vertical cutting force collected from a cutting tool during the milling process to calculate the similarity. For evaluation, dynamic time warping (DTW), a common approach used to calculate the similarity of time series data, was employed for comparison with the Siamese LSTM. Experimental results showed that the proposed Siamese LSTM outperformed the conventional DTW-based similarity calculation.

EEG-based fatigue monitoring can effectively reduce the incidence of related traffic accidents. In the past decade, with the advancement of deep learning, convolutional neural networks (CNN) have been increasingly used for EEG signal processing. However, due to the data’s non-Euclidean characteristics, existing CNNs may lose important spatial information from EEG, specifically channel correlation. Thus, we propose the node-holistic graph convolutional network (NHGNet), a model that uses graphic convolution to dynamically learn each channel’s features. With exact fit attention optimization, the network captures inter-channel correlations through a trainable adjacency matrix. The interpretability is enhanced by revealing critical areas of brain activity and their interrelations in various mental states. In validations on two public datasets, NHGNet outperforms the SOTAs. Specifically, in the intra-subject, NHGNet improved detection accuracy by at least 2.34% and 3.42%, and in the inter-subjects, it improved by at least 2.09% and 15.06%. Visualization research on the model revealed that the central parietal area plays an important role in detecting fatigue levels, whereas the frontal and temporal lobes are essential for maintaining vigilance. This paper revisits Deep Mutual Learning (DML), a simple yet effective computing paradigm. We propose using Rényi divergence instead of the Kullback–Leibler divergence, which is more flexible and tunable, to improve vanilla DML. This modification is able to consistently improve performance over vanilla DML with limited additional complexity. The convergence properties of the proposed paradigm are analyzed theoretically, and Stochastic Gradient Descent with a constant learning rate is shown to converge with O(1)-bias in the worst case scenario for nonconvex optimization tasks. That is, learning will reach nearby local optima but continue searching within a bounded scope, which may help mitigate overfitting. Finally, our extensive empirical results demonstrate the advantage of combining DML and the Rényi divergence, leading to further improvement in model generalization. © 2022, CC BY.
